Music IS an art of copying, otherwise we won't be listening to many many songs in classical ragas! Why don't you feel happy about it as he brought some otherwise unknown melodies to down to earth people?
hey idiot, even to find similarities between songs you need music knowledge. You cannot just say that it is copied. As far as this music is concerned what crap is that english song. I guess 300 yrs of British rule not only made India poor but also created poor self esteem among some Indians who can't digest a brilliant composition by IR.
There is no question that hes a great musician. But this music from Mouna ragam is copied.
And this has been done so smartly that no one would realize it until someone try to compare it.
Anyway this needs some talent too.Being musician myself I understand there is a huge hidden similarity between these two musics. Please don't swear at the up loader unnecessarily.
thevadiya paiya, engada similarities irukku?? Illayaraja is god !! and no nobody like you can stain his reputation as the best musicians in India. Idiot fag !!
Well its two different things to base your song on a particular raga, and to make a song out of a tune of a particular instrument in an overture or an interlude of a musical composition.. One doesnt need to be a genius to do such a thing, in manufacturing terms its called "assembling" in IT terms its called "cut copy paste work":-):-)
@rprasannakumar I agree but this is not a case of cut copy paste, if that's what you are implying. And music is assembled from notes and sometimes, whole clusters may bear similarities. Indian music is melodically rich and variations are easily established but try listening to blues or hard rock and you will find many songs with strong resemblances, especially the riffs. That is not copying, at least the vocal melody or one inst section should be IDENTICAL.
Well its two different things to base your song on a particular Raga and making a song out of a particular instruments tune in a musical composition....
@onetrueindian Not really, as I said, a lot of pre 20th century classical music is not covered by copyright and licks from famous classical compositions are widely found in rock/pop music. It is so ubiquitous and such an intrinsic part of music that people may develop similar passages without realizing the source.
My argument is not with respect to this particular video, its not this song i am talking about. But i appreciate that you do accept the fact that Mr. Illayaraja cannot call some of the songs that he calls as his own "as his own".
@onetrueindian I agree that there are some songs that he did copy though I have not found any instance from his peak or later, most of them seem to be from the late 70s. Copying is copying and whatever the reasons, it was wrong. But it does not follow that with internet, we will find out that all his 2000+ compositions are copied. He is a very original and talented composer.
@CrimsonKing589051 Perhaps, we should dig out instances of Beethoven imitating Mozart and once we have brought down the holy cows, we can be happy and lose the ability to celebrate music.
It's probably the same mode, that's all. This cannot be called copying at all. There are a few songs of his, mainly from the late 70s, that he did copy from Western music, notably the Simon Dupree song Kite (Akkara Cheemai) but this is not one of them. If this is a copy, then about 90% of metal bands would face plagiarism suits and they don't.
The world is shrinking and With technologies like internet which is making everything available for everyone to know, people like illayaraja can only spend thier rest of thier days with abated breath and wait for that day when the world would start to see them as plagarists...
and off course i can openly challenge Mr. Illayaraja ... "chitu kuruvi" one of his songs in the Bhagyaraj movie chinna veedu is a flute tune lifted from a western classical music composition... Mr.Illayaraja cannot deny it ...
Lately i have been listening to western classical music, right now i am hooked to Mozarts compositions and i must say this you will be amazed at how many tunes you will find in those compositions resembling what Mr. Illayaraja calls as his own compositions...
@onetrueindian Mozart's or a lot of pre 20th century classical music for that matter is in the public domain and is fair game. Western classical composers invented all the motifs that you hear in rock and pop and any other kind of light music, so sections of music from those compositions can be identified in the works of any composer who composed in traditional tone (i.e. pre Schoenberg). And anyway, resemblance does not tantamount to copying.
@onetrueindian Further, even tunes composed in an Indian style necessarily have to be drawn from Carnatic or Hindustani raga system. Ilayaraja might change the notes and not strictly follow a particular raagam but it is still BASED on ragas. There's no other way. All light music is adapted from the source, viz, classical music. One doesn't need the tools of internet to work that out.
i dont know music but even to me i could not find a tiny ounce of resemblance..this video is created with malicious intentions only..nothing else to say!

you mindless moron just go before the mirror and says yourself all the bad words in the world..illayaraja composed this tune for his debut orchestrial album how to name it...the album was his 15 year of previous innovation of his musical relish but the album got released in the year 1986.that has only 10 tracks.but he composed 17 tracks for that album.but the time period and money has not let to put that tracks on the record.so he used that in his movies as much as songs and as like themes.
From renowed composers you will get to see some similarities ony because of the base raaga they choose. Ilayaraja is himself an encyclopedia the experience that comes over a period of time cannot be commented that silly. Please get to know the great work did by such legendary composers and then pass on your comments.

The tunes are very different, though the chords used are similar.
