I agree that education is a fundamental right. I don't believe health insurance is though. I think it just needs to be more fair and affordable. It shouldn't be our moral obligation to feed and cloth adults. Health and education are one thing but housing and money is another.
Education is a good thing. Health care is a good thing. Good things are wanted and needed. Things that are wanted and needed make a profit. Things that make a profit are taken care of by the free market system. Things that are taken care of on their own don't need the wasteful watchful eye of the government. It's very simple and that's why socialism and communism DO NOT WORK! Less government = more prosperity across the board.
Health care and Education are not commodities. They are human rights. Every civilized industrial nation provides these two human rights to there citizens without implementing capitalist greed. Health care nor Education should ever be provided in order to make profits. People need health care. People need Education. I REPEAT THEY ARE NOT COMMODITIES!
Goods and services that are commodities belong in the free market, but goods and services that are HUMAN RIGHTS belong to the people. Just because a human right provides a good service doesn't mean it should be marketed for capitalist greed. You and those that think like you want to continue this rule of corporatism.... to further increase the gap between the haves and the have nots.... to continue the widening gap between the rich and the poor....
(continued) ..... to destroy the hopes of the American Dream for MILLIONS of Americans. Well those us that care about this country are not going to allow you to do that. Besides we've already seen what corporatism has done to our health care system. We've already seen what corporatism has done to our education system. It's obvious that we must not continue down this path.
The only RIGHT that you have is the freedom to pursue and maintain property. The government pretty much screws up everything they get their hands on, so why give them more? The "have nots," as you call them could close the gap themselves. There are many people who are rich or at least getting by that are self made. it's not the place of the government to be Robin Hood, which is what ANY entitlement program is.
First and foremost, STOP making "promises." Taxes are too high because spending is too high. There's no emphasis on personal responsibility anymore. You take care of you and I take care of me and mine. I can't and shouldn't have to afford to take care of you and yours. "Universal health care" is NOT a right! If there is no national defense, all of these arguments are moot. The role of the govt is to protect my right to freedom and property, that's all! It's simple.
Oh, please! Taxes are too high because we are paying for an illegal war that you repugicans started. That's the reason why spending is as high as it is. And as for as your comment "there 's no emphasis on personal responsibility" ARE YOU SERIOUS?? The USA is the most capitalistic industrialized country in the world with less social safety nets. This country is very much so every man for himself.
You and people that think like you are the cause of the real problems in this country. You speak as though the US is some sort of aristocracy where the HAVES vs the have nots are the beneficiaries. Forget those that don't have, right? Let them "fetch" for themselves, huh? Health care is a right! Under the constitution the government is responsible for the welfare of the nation as whole and our Declaration of Independence specifically states we are entitled to LIFE!
Without our health there is no life! I agree the role of gov is to provide a national defense but that doesn't me we go starting illegal wars with nations that never attacked us. The key word here is DEFENSE, NOT OFFENSE! The role of govt is to provide the general welfare of the people, and that includes protecting our freedoms, (property has nothing to do with, you aren't entitled to have property), our liberty, and our pursuit of happiness.
Actually the right to property is just about the only one given constitutionally. Socialized anything (including health care) ammounts to nothing but stealing from one to provide for another.
The only way to "make sure every American has an equal opportunity to the American Dream. " Is to totally redistribute wealth. Other than the money that your family may have, the playing field is level.

In other worlds, our government was designed to make sure every American had an equal opportunity to the American Dream.

I like Richardson's point on funding the war and cancer research. 2 weeks of the war is the equivalent to 1 yr of cancer research.
But I like RonPaul's message better. Give Freemarkets a chance instead of managed markets (HMO's).
Get out of Iraq. Spend less federally. Let people keep there $. People can invest in research on their own.
Richardson implies that more money might go towards cancer research.
