I think that the children are just reacting to a bad situation and the example created by their father. The younger boy reading the paper, when he most likely isn't able to read it, may be something he's seen his father do. I think that the children aren't being treated well by their father, they don't like the way their father treats their mother, and they mirror the behavior they see in their father.
