The song was actually written for a movie "At Close Range." The movie is about a kid who gets lured into his father's crime family. The father tries to have his own son kill and kills the son's girlfriend. He has a chance to get revenge and has a gun to his father's head and decides no, I am better than you I'm not a murderer. Song fits movie perfectly.

This caused such a controversy from people who were too closed minded to see the symbolism. She was only representing Jesus, as many people have for various religious reasons. Jesus represents a second chance and that is what is being interpreted here. A second chance for people with very difficult circumstances growing up represented by her dancers and a second chance for The number of innocent children contracting HIV represented by photos flashed on stage and a scripture from the Bible.
