coming back to england from munich, everything takes forever, its right the buses here are always late and slow when youre on them, German efficiency ftw
@TheFlinglish i've lived in Manila Philippines for 3 months now. You want late/inefficent come here. You appreciate just how efficient buses/trains/EVERYTHING is in England when you go to the third world
I've not met a German person, but I'm sure this is just a stereotype. I'm surprised why so many people take these things seriously (as in the "Harry and Paul: Americans in London, etc).
I love this, I'm British and I love Germany, its a brilliant country, I advise anyone who wants to go, to go, its a beautiful, interesting and an amazing country :)
Hahahahaaha!!! I loved these sketches! Harry Enfield and Chums of 1997 was a work of genius and there has never been anything like it since. I Really wish the BBC would release the series on DVD. I loved the Jurgen sketch where he gets wound up on a tour of the docklands when the tour guide mentions that it was all rebuilt after the blitz.
@chicaMelia It's funny. But the thing about the bus times is very true! Nothing runs on time in Britain. The thing about the present tense is also true eh? I guess it is because other European languages only have one form of the present tense, whereas as English has three! I have friends in Munich and when I visit them it is wonderful to use the fantastic public transport there.
why do you keep saying jürgen without umlaut was offensive, of coufrse its not. English keyboards do not hve this sign, so how else could the feller write it.
ALSO, the three umlaut letters ä,ö, ü are orthographically identical with ae, oe, ue. Because thats where the two dots stem from: centuries ago, they used to write e.g. "ö" as an "o" with a little "e" on top of it. And after time, it becamse two dots.
So, if you want to papstlicher than the Papst, you can write it "Juergen".
@jerrygreg2 LOL I actually think that this show up there has some funny elements. I like it when the English take the piss of the Germans, when its to do with the real behaviour of Germans. This stupid sentence " i walked aroudn with a a funny hat", for example, that really could stem from German tourists. lol
But in the end, when the guy freaks out and starts shouting, this is pure fiction. Sort of "militaristic German". Thats absolutely unreal.
The Prussian Empire was militaristic indeed, but the Fench Empire, the British Empire and the Soviet Union and the USA (all four winners of WW II) were far more militaristic. In that aspect, taking the piss of Germans is perfectly OK to me, some of it is actually quite funy. Only this nazi/military stereotype is a sort of outdated Allied warpropaganda, and i have to tickle me armpits in order to laugh! lol
But still i like Jürgen the German, lol, its not a bad show.
But i dont think its important. I dont think any german will take offense in that. Most of them would probably not even notice. What sucks instead, is, i just saw another thing by enfield. He imitated Hitler, and Goebbels, and all of that. I am not saying its "offensive", but i think its just stupid that the British always connect Germany to the Nazis. I am trying to imagine what the british would say if every program about them would depict them as slave traders and racists.
@Elberiver11 No they won't. That's the point! That's the joke. The joke is about what would be expected after my first sentence and the contrast with what I said! Oh my, it's not that good but it is accepted humour. HONEST!
@Elberiver11 We do have a lot of programmes that remind us of our lugubrious past. Some people, like old Tories are in denial and celebrate all things British as if we civilised the whole world but others face the truth.
@Elberiver11 Do I have to explain my bloody humour? OK - Are you deliberately trying to offend Germans? - This alludes to the fact that there's a stereotype on offer in the sketch.
Don't you know it's Jürgen...- but I'm not talking about the stereotype, I'm talking about the vowel change. It's delivered without exclamation mark or lol for comic effect ie deadpan. WELL IT'S NOT FUNNY IF I HAVE TO SPELL IT OUT TO YOU. I won't be visiting Germany as a comic!
This is a very clever sketch.

But fortunately I'm not like that. Not at all. ;)
But some Germans are like that. Just like some Americans, Dutch, Spains, Italiens... as well.
So I don't take it too serious.
