Screw transporters, ill take a shuttle over transporter any day! I mean, being broken down into molocules then being put back together somewhere else--- you have to trust the person at the control panel. What if they hate you? Or if they want your job? Imagine how that would go: "oh yeah, John? I accidently beamed him into a wall, and the transporter's jammed. Its gonna take at least 3 months to fix. I'd be happy to take on his job while he's gone, though." HELL no!
transporter = dematerializing you (breaking you down molecule to atoms), keeping in memory banks the data of your body and mental state at the time of break down, then rematerializing you at an other place (building you up based on a data in memory). So is that the real you? or Just a computerized copy of your "state".
To answer your question. Its the law of shuttle crafts. Every time they're used something bad happens. Take that shuttle out for survey something. You're damned right you will run into a black hole and lose contact with your ship.
Well, I think the reason for the TMP seeming more real is pretty clear. The sequence comes out of the blue, is shocking, is more drawn out and has poor Sonak screaming in pain: "AAAHGHHH!" BRUTAL!
Oh, by the way, there was another accidental death that occurred due to a transporter malfunction - namely that of Weyoun V, mentioned in a DS9 episode - "Penumbra," I think.
Ok, but lets compare this to holodeck accidents. But yeah, if I were president of Star Fleet I would ban holodecks and transporters asap. Just look at all the accidents that happened on the enterprises alone! And thats the best ship in the Fleet! holy shit, what is happening on the other thousands of ships!
@kakashi76767 I sort of agree with you on this. I mean, the whole Seska hologram fiasco from Voyager's 3rd Season, "Worst Case Scenario" should definitely be a prime example of how the holodeck can be a major hazard to the whole ship. But then again, in the "Bride of Chaotica!", if it wasn't for the Holodeck, the crew never would have met those aliens (and, of course, it caused the problem at hand in that episode). So, when I say, I sort of agree with you on this, there are a lot of exceptions.
I remember seeing the alien dog for the first time and laughing for five minutes straight. I had just started watching TOS, and it cemented in my mind the idea that I absolutely had to watch the entire series. Star Trek FTW!
#7 was very eerie, also I think it's probably the most disturbing scene in the entire ST. Few details that gave extra disturbing flavor to it were: the fact that the scene was rather long, distorted screams and the shocked slow response from starbase officer. When I think again, the entire ST the motion picture was eerie as hell.
You know, you'd think they would at some point stop or at least reduce the amont of times they use a transporter and opt for the shuttle craft more often.
@anton7580 YEah, you would think that with all the upgrades they make to the engines, shields, and phasers, somewhere along the line they should get to transporters! =D. Of course, they would lose one of their best plot devices =P
#7 was actually pretty hard to watch. Just glad that the 12A rating and 70s special effects meant they went through to the off camera transporter :P And I aint seen the DS9 one yet x3
#13 was not an accident.. that was the intent. Scotty used it as a lifeboat.
#17 was not an accident... they were jamming the transporter so he couldn't get back.
#8... I don't know if you can consider Transporter Psychosis as a transporter accident... it's a neurological disorder resulting from transporting, yes... but when we think accidents... we think about that nasty one from The Motion Picture.

Any wonder McCoy was paranoid about using them.

No way would I use one of those things...

17 and 13 were on purpose.
The aliens wanted Picard and their captain to be stuck on the planet so that they could get to know each other.
Scotty rigged the transporters so that he could live long enough to be rescued.

A lot of these weren't accidents.

That this happened at least 20 times means McCoy was right all along :)

actually i would put TMP as number 1. for what ever reason the ds9 version wasn't as "real" to me. I'm not sure why that is.

I would rate "being killed and/or being incorrect reassmbled, leading to your death" a hell of alot higher than time travel

My nightmarish transporter accident scenario - to rematerialized inside a solid object, like a rock.

Transporter inventor turned Quasimodo in Enterprise and Spock losing his mother during the destruction of Vulcan in Star Trek (2009) come to mind.

Good job! You even included TAS. I never realized there were so many transporter accidents--and this is only the TOP 20! Just how many are there?
DandAinTac 6 months ago
You missed the STNG episode where they were beamed onto a planet scattered and i think Laforge was hanging upside down from a tree.

Yeah -- The Last Outpost. It didn't make the Top 20 cut.

@mokwella should have made a top 25.

Tuvix was the number one HOKIEST transporter malfunction.

Pretty sure 18 was from an episode when Chekotay took off his clothes in that horrible Voayger episode I forget the name of...probably a good thing.
bazookoidben 7 months ago
13 wasn't an accident. It was a jerry rig to try and use the transporter to keep Scotty and his crewmate alive while they awaited rescue.

@PassiveSmoking I was just going to say exactly the same thing. 13 wasn't an accident.

#13 was no accident- it was intentional!
