It's rather a physical reaction, not a chemical. The mercury amalgamizes the aluminium, it's sort of a 'solvation'.

However if you drip a little Hg2+ on freshly polished aluminium, than that will do the trick too, because the mercury oxidizes the aluminium, which reaction produces metal mercury, and than that metal mercury amalgamize the aluminium, and so on.
