@UniversalTruths - Sorry to disappoint, but I'm a living, breathing example that the low-carb diet can be healthful. It's successfully cured me of 10-year struggle of Graves Disease - a thyroid disorder - in just two months.

Low carb diets are dangerous and should not be followed. The body runs on carbohydrates, get them from organic whole food sources, preferably from fruits. Keep your intake of fat bellow 10% This is a scientifically proven, not opinion driven, way of staying healthy and improving physical performance.
i have a very simple question : can i eat porridge oats (made with water and fresh fruit and nuts) on a low carb diet ? i've always considered this the cornerstone of my diet, but can i include it on a low carb diet ?
What is agreed between those who are anti-carb AND anti-sugar (Taubes) and those who are just anti-sugar (Robert Lustig), is that SUGAR IS BAD. Taubes admits that sugar may be the true beginning of the problem. What the Japanese don't eat much of is sugar (and the French eat a lot less of it than we do: my French friend, on coming to America, couldn't believe how sweet the bread is over here -- High Fructose Corn Syrup of course. Taubes just published on April 14 2011 "Is Sugar Toxic"
I really dont understand this, the lowest heart disease rates in the world are in France and Okinawa, Japan. Neither exclude carbohyrdates, in fact Japanese eat a lot more fish and vegetarian fare than they do lots of meat.French eat a pretty balanced diet, but definitely eat bread and have the lowest heart disease rates? But carbs are the enemy? I dont know...
@Jleigh225 well fish IS meat isn't it? It'll all fat and protein...zero carbs. Butter and cheese have zero carbs...I'm pretty sure the French eat a fair amount of those...along with drinking red wine...which is good for you. The Asians tend to a lot less of everythng compared to the Western diets....let Mickey D's and KFC work their magic in those countries and they'll catch up to the West in terms of obesity. They're just a few decades behind us.
@bloozedaddy Its true, after doing more research on those diets low carb makes more sense and you are right. Japanese eat mostly rice, which is the least offensive "grain" because technically it is a seed, they also eat tons of vegetables and very little bread. The French food philosophy is about fresh, limited processed, and quality ingredients, and when they do eat grains its covered in butter which slows blood sugar absorption and insulin release. Taubes appears more and more correct.
Good information. I just bought a documentary called Fat Head the Movie, which directed me toward people like Gary Taubes. Have you seen it, its a great little homemade film!
@KanineKruizer Yes I've watched parts of it here on YT. It's good stuff. I hope it leads more people away from the Conventional Wisdom nutrition insanity.
If you want more good nutrition info check out marks daily apple . It's a primal/paleo diet website. Primal/paleo is about emulating the diet of our pre-agricultural revolution ancestors for optimum health. Humans did not evolve eating most of the things we eat today, and our bodies cannot handle these new foods well which leads to sickness.
I've tried five diets, some almost vegetarian and some sticking to carbs as it shows in the nutritional pyramid, and each of the five times I've gained weight. I gave up with losing last year, and my current weight is about 394.
I went to my doctor and he told me most of the things I've already learned over the internet, so I felt that maybe I had something wrong with me. Then I saw that Fat Head documentary. I've been on my new diet for only three days now, so we'll see how it is.
@KanineKruizer I tried the low fat diets too, and working out and I experienced little fat loss. Then I switched to a timed carb diet (I took glucose pre-workout and ate a ketogenic diet) and saw amazing progress.
Eat less than 100 g carbs a day and you will lose fat, eat less than 50 g and you will lose much more fat, less than 20 g and it will melt away like a snowman in july, less than 20 g is hard though. Start at less than 50 g and if you can lower it to 20-30g.
@rast123456789 I hope that's true. I'm starting to lose faith in the exercise and diet regimen I've been doing for the past year and am re-thinking things after coming across Mr Taubes.
I guarantee you that if you avoid caloric sweeteners (See Nancy Appleton's book Suicide by Sugar for all 30 names for sugar) you will loses weight in your sleep.
@D3adGoon most people that are over weight and following todays high carb diet will usually loose weight on low carb. Just a warning dont go on a low carb diet and then after you loose weight start eating tons of carbs again. You will gain it all back eventually you still have to maintain a healthy lifestyle but more carbs can be added back in. books i like are mark sissons primal blueprint the atkins diet and metabolic typing kinda influenced me
@rast123456789 Yeah it's all good. Once I find the diet that truly works I stick to it. Just out of curiosity. What's the maximum carb intake you have day? I'm feeling torn between going full-on Atkins style or just keeping it to about 50g a day or so...
@D3adGoon Just be warned going on full atkins is a little tough at first make sure to enough protein to not lose muscle and eat fight for energy MCTs can be converted the fastest for energy. Um lets see my carbs I eat between about a 100 to 120 now but thats exercising to . Also you need to feel in the rest of the cals you dont get from carbs with fat and protein so not to slow down your metabolism. See insulin stores fat but eating more makes your metabolism higher. UGH to much to write no spac
Thanks for uploading. Good Calories Bad Calories is a brilliant book but i was getting bleary eyed with all the facts and research studies that were sighted. It was hard to put down
He is definitively right! I had Diabetes of extreme level (500 mmol/dl), 170/110 and 125 kg 5 years ago.
Today I am 38kg less a man ;-), 100-120 blood sugar and 120/130:90
Get rid of (especially short) carbohydrates like sugar, flower, bread, pizza, pasta, rice, fruit juice, beer (yes!) and everything where sugar, glucose or fructose is in!!!
Eat vegetables as much as You can, yoghurt, kefir, nuts, fish, chicken, quark, zaziki, salad.
Red meat contains essential nutrients not found in plant food. It is imperative that you eat rich sources of saturated fat. The entire premise of his book was to show how shoddy the research was on the Low Fat nypothesis!
You need to change the title of this video to "Gary Taubes on Refined sugar and flour", NOT just carbohydrates, that is sending the wrong message.

grains cause leaky gut, which leads to chronic low grade inflammation, which basically leads to every chronic disease we know

A good nutrient ratio for weight loss is: 10% carbs, 30-40% protein, 50-60% fat.
