  • What ignant bitch would have John Mayer as her man on the side?

  • @omlettexpert I agree

  • Such an under-rated song, so well written

Feel free to check out my cover of this/lenny, I'd appreciate any feedback

  • I love him so much:) I try so hard to learn this on guitar but I cant.. oh well =b

  • This song makes me want to cry

  • i love him when he sings, not so much when he talks

  • @PrettyAsPink84 The difference between talking and singing: Talking comes from the brain (or in JM's case, sometimes not even that), and singing comes from the heart.

  • intro to the song sounds like come back to bed (mayer) meets let it be me (lamontagne) meets love is a verb (mayer)

  • @KerryJamesBalden the intro is actually bits of "lenny" by SRV

  • @ha2ki2an not the lenny part, the first bit of man on the side

  • THE INTRO IS FUCKING SEXY

  • sadly im going through what john is talking about with this girl...shes always fucking busy but yet i always have time to txt her....

  • listen to the words..

  • DAMN!!! Mayer is amazing!!!!!

  • that solo in the beginning is just ridiculous. I can learn it but to reproduce it to the same quality is just impossible.

  • @yucky1336 bro, if you could write a tab for even half of it I would be eternally grateful. I really wanna learn this!

  • @EndofTheWeekReview there is actually. its pretty close to the one he's playing. just look for it on ultimate guitar

  • First John Mayer song I've ever heard. Best John Mayer song I've ever heard.

  • the worst part about it is i would be free when you wanted me!! DAAAMNNNN.

  • Such a relaxing song, so smooth, so calm. And that guitar, that guitar melts me.

  • <3

  • ♥ LOVE IT!

  • he is amazing!! love this song<3

  • BEST VERSION EVER! Remember listening to this version back in the days before Mayer even was a big name here in Europe. In a strange way, Mayer was better back then to me. More unspoilt, noth by the media and as a muscian. His older songs still goes straight to my heart, whilst the newer ones takes a little more time to get there.

  • John Mayers most noble song. Thanks for everything

  • @MrJSMNA First song he ever wrote :)

  • @Ela1337 how old was he?

  • @FORGODSAKEIDONTKNOW i dont know, but i was when he was at berkley

  • @FORGODSAKEIDONTKNOW i dont know, only know he was in berkley at the time so "collage age" i guess :)

  • though that's not the happiest song ever the guitar intro always makes my day. :)

  • I am a huge John Mayer fan. I love the texture of his voice and his guitar skills are just incred!

  • I love how this version has no screaming girls ruining it.

  • 6 people are obviously the man on the side...

  • It's ok people who missed the like button, we forgive you.

  • amazing

  • Where can I download this?

  • This song is my life. I wish I were kidding.

  • true that:/

  • The chord progression, the lyrics, everything, fuckin awesome! It's obvious he wouldn't put this on a record since it's really poppish! It seems like he don't like to put that on albums - but this one... dammit!

  • out of all the unreleased songs he has. this is the one that i wish so badly would be on a album. its the lyrics. i think pretty much all of his songs are strong as far as melody chords and musicality goes. but lyrically this one is far beyond your body is a wonderland lol.

  • @haslam311 you're right, but that's what pays the bills

  • That tone makes my dick throb uncontrollably against my thighs.

  • I freaking love this man

  • He makes me want to buy a Martin OMJM, a Fender John Mayer Strat 3TSB and a Fender Black One. How am I ever gonna pay that?

  • @Sjorsieboy93 Don't forget the custom SIgnature Two Rock Amplifier setup he uses....

  • @Sjorsieboy93 Whatever you do, don't buy the OMJM unless it's the original. The second one's terrible compared to the first. Have a look for a nice dovetail neck join OM model. I recommend an OM-28V or something like that. Much nicer guitars (:

  • John you take my breath away every single timeee !!!!!

  • Sounds much like sucker :) though, this ones sweeter

  • We are all allowed 1 man crush.

  • @fEkuaR man it's gona be hard, its a battle against dave grohl and john mayer :( GIVE ME 2!!!

  • beginning solo sounds a little like jimi. love this, and i love his guitar.

  • this song is perfection.

  • @heartsaremagnetsx absolutely! this song is pure and truly demonstrates john mayer's talents!

  • @4memememeful @annelotteVEERLE

    watch?v=zNeNYzwKrtU

  • @4memememeful

    hahahaaaa, i didn't know that to !

  • why is there a blackberry?....

  • I always come back to this song, it's just brilliant

  • <3 i think i'm inlove.

  • ok. this is great

  • Thanks for sharing this @DonnaFirsty. It's gorgeous...beautifully sung & exquisite guitar as always. Man on The Side is one of my many, many favorites from our beloved JM.

  • @Mimimph you are so right

    JM for ever and everybody.

  • Awesome, I'd never heard this one. Thanks for sharing!!

  • What is this reference to Lenny?

  • @brooklynsweb Lenny is the beginning guitar work... it's actually SRV. I believe that SRV wrote it for his brother Lenny.

  • @DonnaFirsty Actually it was written for his wife, just letting you knw

  • @MatiBtodo14 According to Wikipedia, you are right and I stand corrected!!! Learn something new every day! I wonder where I read that it was his brother? I think when Any Given Thursday first came out, I looked it up. I thought I read "brother" on one of my husband's SRV CDs. I'm gonna have to go check that out. Thanks for pointing out my error, I hate having misinformation :)

  • @DonnaFirsty also the name of SRV's guitar, named after his wife, although he said he loved the guitar more.

  • @dougsusername Thanks for the info!

  • @DonnaFirsty Wife.

  • excuse me misseeeees bizzze bade .

  • @DarjanBar busybody ;)

  • A young Clapton. He plays so much like him

  • good, any given thursday version is a lot better though

  • i wish you told me whether the message in this song was for me .. but you keep making things complicating for me...

  • @Kyle4thenight First of all, your username indicates that you, my friend, are a sodomite. The two kids, who no one truly cares about, are both idiots for posting their life stories on YouTube. These kids think they YouTube user's care. Sure they are gonna get some people, such as you, with absolutely no social life outside of Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, or other websites, who act like they care so they can get a response back in order for them to feel a connection with someone else.

  • It is these people whose lives revolve around social networking. They make acquaintances with the other people who share their same loss for friends, and this makes them feel, whatever it is they feel. Social Networking is a waste. I advise you all to just walk outside for about an hour. See what the world is from your own eyes and create your own opinion of things that life brings in front of you. Do not let your computer decide this for you. The Creator > Creation - This applies in all cases.

  • @antiquatedsmile arrrr mate shut up you're boring

  • BEST. THING. EVER.

  • john mayer is just amazing

  • anybody know what scale he solos in?

  • @bboyrave E major

  • thank you so much for putthing this online! was looking for specifically this recording, love it so much, so many memories <3

  • Good luck to you and the King... Man on the side story of my fkn life

  • it's ridiculous how gay i am for him.

  • @jakedeving hahahaha same hahahahaha

  • @jakedeving - This sums it up quite adequately.

  • I love you John.

  • how could i get ahold of this?

  • Comment removed

  • @leviticus503 That sounds like Napoleon Dynamite. I highly doubt you dated a model. Oh and btw, that story sucked.

  • 0:34 gave me a boner

  • Thankyou SO much for uploading this <333

  • Mistake FREE! I mean it's John Mayer, must I say more?

  • Anybody have a link/way to get this in mp3 format?

  • Great performance. Too bad they recorded the AC guitar through a piezo pickup. Would have been so much better with a mic on the guitar.

  • You can really feel the raw emotional purity in this version, as opposed to the AGT track with all the 13 year old girls (who can't even relate to what this song is really saying) shrieking like banshees in the background. John Mayer is a terribly under appreciated musical genius and lyricist. Thanks for posting!

  • @texashookem22 Under appreciated??? Tell that to his millions of fans around the world, who appreciate the hell out of him and have for over ten years now!!

  • this version is perfect

  • john mayer has left me speechless.. once again.

  • Daaaanng! This version is awesome. I really liked the version on Any Given Thursday, but I'm always a fan of acoustic versions. This one feels a lot more intimate and meaningful without all the crazy girls screaming in the background. Thanks for posting this.

  • I can't believe that this song hasn't been recorded!

I love the song, i love his voice and i love his guitar skills. Genius!

  • mmm.... this song reminds me of homecoming in my freshman year of high school, my ex girlfriend (girlfriend at the time) she was a model, stunning beautiful, stood me up, and i had to sit on the side of the dance. and my only ride home was at the dance, so i had to sit and wait, till the dance was over.

  • @leviticus053 that's really depressing man...sorry to hear that

  • @leviticus053 I had a similar experience, except she dumped me for my best friend. Ill never forget how she had to rip her tounge out of his mouth to tell me "Uhmmm, we are over" =[

  • @iplayguitar420 Dude you are just as pathetic as Leviticus' Napoleon Dynamite Self. Do you two fags realize that you are complaining about a crappy breakup story over Youtube. NO ONE CARES BECAUSE THEY DONT KNOW YOU!!!!!! Oh and @leviticus503 Can you not get past the stage of making up stories so people will think you are cool? Dude its YOUTUBE not a social network. These people aren't your friends and they give no crap. Delete your account because you are a waste to hummanity. Fags.

  • @antiquatedsmile Well put, however there is a flaw in your logic...you claim no one cares about what they have to say. However you took time to write two different comments to each person. Each comment specifically dictated to their specific circumstance. It seems to me that even though you believe no one cares about what they say...you, in fact, do care what they had to say...

  • @iplayguitar420 damn man i had the same experience.. and a friend of mine gave me some good advice... "Fuck that Hoe Bitch"

  • @dimepage spot on

  • to all you guys bitching about "jazz chords" -

chords are a group of musical notes played together. seventh, diminished, augmented, major and minor chords are played in music. not specific genres. learn your shit.

  • I ask myself how an artist like he is, does not get the recognition that he deserves. I mean it. So much called "musicians" that just sing the same lyrics over and over again and which the instrumental is a completly bullshit are more known than he is! Really, have they seen this guy work?! It's fenomenal for godsake!

p.s.- bad english but I think it's ok to understand

  • @SCBlaise Indeed................ Phenomenal? lol

  • @Gubby007 my mistake x) i'm not english sooo... yeah xD

  • 5 people are deaf

  • I love the solo! I wish there were tabs... :(

  • @Hotdawg0007 Actually, there is. go to ultimateguitar Search for man on the side. The one that has the highest rating is this version. :P

  • @XxJackTheRipper23xX I meant for the solo part. I learned everything I could from that tab... but the tab doesn't have the solo in it. I guess I just gotta use improv... Hmm... It might be good. Lets hope =)

  • @Hotdawg0007 there are my friend

  • "good luck to you and the kid" haha

  • @multieatmyshorts2010 its "good luck to you and the king"

  • @JMaust94 well it should be "good luck to you and the kid" haha. that would be funnier, but not mayer's style i guess haha

  • ....and was supposed to be mr Busybody.

  • I'm the Lady on the side!

  • Awesome music to such a heart ache of what alot of people have gone through in their lives. He captured it so brilliantly and delivered it so sweet.

  • taylor henderson sings this waaaaaaaaay better =)

  • @tarryntoelau

You're probably 15 that's why you think that.

I just checked out his version, and he has such a typical singing voice it's boring.

He did alright, apart from missing out half the song, changing the lyrics so they didn't make as much sense, and being lazy with the guitar.

This version is a thousand times better.

  • @1JudgeFudge1

um did u c the part?

    "never had a lesson"

taylor is just a natural better singeer and the views show his version is better.

  • @tarryntoelau Did you miss the part where if there was no John Mayer young Taylor would have had to choose a different song to cover.....

Seriously though kudos to Taylor for a fine cover of a great track, but dont let this become a piddling contest, just chill out and enjoy some fine music!

  • @1JudgeFudge1 I'm 15, and i KNOW that John Mayer is the best!

I mean that Tayler did fine, but nothing can be compared to JM, he's one of a kind.

  • @tarryntoelau Bullshit. He's good, but this is fucking John Mayer.

  • @mbasketcballb I think it was mostly improvised. But it wasn't musically that outstanding, except for him always playing with a nice blues feeling. He does have feeling, mister Mayer dude. I wish he'd put this song as a bonus track or something on Room For Squares, though not necessarily this recording

  • Taylor Henderson done a very good cover of this song on an Australian talent show... should all check it out!

  • could you send me this? thanks :)

  • Great on the Gat but his storytelling is amazing also

  • GOD, I've already discovered this song in this acoustic version, and...it only proves, that I love/adore/amore/like each and every song of this man. Brilliant musician.

  • John Mayer is brilliant

  • beauty.

  • i got this since 05 ;D

  • i'm one of the lucky ones to have this recording too. Its one of the best recordings of this song imo.

  • For some reason, this song reminds me of Life By The Drop by Stevie Ray Vaughan, which is one of his biggest influences.

  • brilliant.

  • The bridge solo is so awesome! It fits perfectly into the song.

  • Love that Beginning Part [:

  • perfect song from a perfect musician

  • john will come to rock in rio, i would love to watch john play this song, but it's almost impossible...

  • i LOVE his guitar skills. it's like mixed with jazz and blues.

  • @uhmmmm123 John Mayer doesnt have a drop of Jazz in his playing..

  • @atl2maryland Alot of his chords are jazz STYLE. Now Im not saying either of you is wrong but in SOME songs he uses jazz chords. It helps him to add color to his songs. Like his cover of lenny by Stevie Ray Vaughan.

  • @atl2maryland you're a dumb fuck

  • @atl2maryland your retarded. do you even know what jazz is?

  • @leviticus053 what the hell? please go find something constructive to do

  • There's something special about these acoustic versions... I keep coming back to them!

  • John rocks and knows like no other to give you goosebumbs!

  • hmm, I'll show you some others that can surely give you goosebumps :)))

  • @ripthestrsdown66

He did play some of Lenny in the beginning of this song though - It's just to start out the song abit more dynamic!

  • This is great, thanks for posting. In the commentary or extras for Any Given Thursday, he talks about how he was not even planning to play this song in that show, but decided to play it at the last second. Glad he did!

  • Man on the Side an SRV song?!?! HAHAHAHA dude i hope you were joking. either that or you have no idea what type of music SRV played to ever think he would write or play something like man on the side. lol

  • yes Lenny is an SRV song. This is a song john early in hi career and to my knowledge never put on an album. it's called Man on the Side. maybe we are looking at a different video bc this isn't Lenny.

  • dude....Lenny is an instrumental song. mayer does cover lenny sometimes but it has nothing to do with man on the side. you are confused my friend.

  • @CUFreeze It's ignorant pricks like you that buy "Battle Studies" and praise it as some great achievement, like it lived up to or even exceeded expectations, neither of which it accomplished. If you don't think this song, especially THIS version, was inspired by "Lenny" and SRV, you're a thousand times less knowledgable than you accuse other people of being. You probably have no idea how many SRV licks John plays, especially in live solos. Quit being such a condescending douchebag.

  • Dude...you got owned already by CUFreeze...give it up.

  • This is not lenny. John sometimes plays a little bit of lenny's riffs at the begining of this song, but then he transitions from that into this, which is his song called Man on the Side. Notice Lenny does not have words and this does, that should be your first clue.

  • @ak231510 I never said this song WAS Lenny. I understand fully that MOTS is a John Mayer song, but he usually uses Lenny as an intro/transition, and that's where this song came from.

  • Why did this get so many thumbs down? It's true, and doesn't make JM any less of a guitarist...everyone needs some inspiration.

  • Are you retarded? "Man On the Side" is in fact John Mayer's song.

  • Correct....I was replying to a comment that appears to be gone now, stating that John Mayer regularly takes licks from Stevie Ray Vaugh's Lenny, especially in the live version of Man on the Side from Any Given Thursday.

Also, I didn't say anything about MOTS not being a john Mayer song...

  • Fuck. This is one of my favorite songs by John.

  • This song and victoria are my favorite songs by him

  • I am crying by listening to your music

  • than, maybe you should be listening something more cheerful ;))

  • THE most beautiful song I've ever heard.
