"Nevertheless I am devoted to him." That's the duality of Angelique, exactly what kept the character so fascinating. That, and Lara Parker's skilled and believable delivery. Angelique is the author herself of the most misery inflicted on Barnabas, yet unhesitatingly will destroy anyone who tries to harm him. She loves him, yet he spurns her, so she is alternately vengeful but also protective. It's what got us straight home from school by 4p.m. without fail every single weekday. Still amazing.

She should have skipped the Gloating Phase and gotten right to work. And choked up on that damned mallet -- so it couldn't have glanced off his pocketwatch or something. And the extended exposition by Angelique is classic. Curse you, plot devices!

Lara and Diana sure play well off each other! I always enjoyed seems like these - 2 strong willed ladies who are willing to battle for what they hold dear. Thank you for posting. Lara and Diana have come to many of the past DS Festivals, to the delight of their many fans.

One of my favorite scenes from the show is during the 1897 storyline and Laura thought she had destroyed Angelique and when she went to get her children Jamison and Nora, Angelique appeared with her trademark sinister laugh

The greatest female villein of the entire series was the Phoenix; in fact she and Court Petofi were the greatest villeins of all. Angelique just got lucky that the Phoenix was as always focusing on her children and not her.

I LOVE Laura. At least we get her twice during the series. The 1897 Laura has some of the bitchiest, wittiest lines of the show. Diana is fantastic. She gives Laura class and style, she's not just a low-class emotioal child like some of the other female villians!

@phorlakhnanta Ah, not for nothing, but Angelique got owned by Laura in this scene-including in acting-which was hard since Lara Parker was the greatest horror actress ever on TV; btw, it took Barnabas, Angelique, Quentin, and Magda together to defeat the Phoenix. I am very sorry Laura was never brought back again on the series, she was the most interesting female villein.

OMG! I never knew Laura Collins ever met knew Angelique! These were the two most evil women on the show! Along with Katherine Lee Scott the actresses who portrayed Laura & Angelique were simply superb! The latter two were so menacing and deliciously frightening in any era! And why was Grayson giving the narrative in the 2nd part of this clip? Didn't Vicky Winters always deliver the haunting intro narrative?

@brian455 Ok, I have to say this even though I am probably the only DS fan in history (fan since 1967) to say this: I was rooting for Laura to defeat Angelique (and company). I only discovered the Phoenix due to the Sailor posting the 1967 Phoenix story arc-Laura was the best.

The two greatest actresses in all of DS history--with all due respect to Katherine Lee Scott--as much as I respect the characterization of Angelique, the Phoenix was the most interesting female "monster" character--it is to bad that Laura was introduced so early in the 1897 storyline--and she did not get a chance to tangle with Court Petofi. Maybe that would have been to many strong characters together.

if i am not mistaken..i remember angelique destroying Laura..by burning her up in a fire. I thought laura had power of the fire but evidently angelique was more powerful..both were witches.

No, Angelique and Barnabas just outmanuevered her; being a Phoenix, Laura cannot be permanently destroyed by fire.
Another aborted DS storyline that could have been great-just add in Count Petofi.

The Dark Shadows dialogue is really good! I didn't know that American writers could do such a good job. I'm just used to the bland cop stuff. This is great!

To be sure, I was way PISSED when the brought Angelique back so easily--again do not violate mythology--she was completely destroyed by Ben and Barnabas by fire when she was in human form in her own century--not a ghost.

FYI. In the original DS Laura Collins was not a witch. She was a Phoenix, an immortal being with power over fire. In that case Angelique did turn out to be more crafty and was able to defeat her.

Basically, Angelique was able to make Laura age in front of her children who then rejected her--Laura was as a Phoenix scheduled to be called back to Ra then but wanted to bring her kids with her. I am not happy with the way Angelique had some power over Laura, a creature of fire; that was cheating guys. Angelique could not directly destroy Laura who would have destroyed Angelique--but the Phoenix only has a limited time on earth on each cycle. Laura will return in 1967!
