@bklyncosanostra there is nothing new about it, it just hasn't been promoted in the west...... at least not as much as taekwondo. just cause you do not know it does not mean it is new.
Silla kingdom started 57BC, and that's as far as historians can prove with evidence. Please don't say something which u don't know of. Taekkyon is not officially mentioned but there are several drawings of footwork similar that of Taekkyon is found in several tomb of Silla empire. Sunmudo came from Shaolin, and Shaolin is Indian origin:
(Plz type Shaolin and Budism in wiki)
Buda was only a templer of Hindi, not surprisingly a lot of similarities
not only this, Koreans were not allowed to use even their language but Japanese. still Sunmudo had been handed to few masters who secretly have preserved it's own skills and spirit. so that's what i know about Sunmudo
so scholars guess that Sunmudo, which practices human body like water flows, is first to be from the Buddhism sector, Seon. thereafter, Teakkyon goes to Teakwondo, and this martial art came to have it's unique sector. during the great japanese invasion, it was prohibited to practice in terms of 'cultural masacre'.
as Taekyun pratitioner, and native korean, I do and can assure you that; SONMUDO is the best martial art now in korea, the best technically first of all.
about other placese or other arts I have no idea, but you can believe me about sonmudo, but as for me personally I will do Taekyun further, cause I don't do this today, and tomorrow others,,
Taekkyon originated from the year around 700~800 B.C. from which a document mentions about it. and about two hundred later, the kingdom of unified silla further developed taekkyon. and in this era, there is an assummtion that by adopting buddhism as a national religion, there came a different practice of buddhism: Seon, and Kyo. Seon puts high value on 'sudden enlightment' and Kyo is related to reading sutras.
