The three albums that Butch recorded those many years ago still stand up to the test of time. I'll never forget the one and only time I saw him perform. It was with Bill Monroe and they were on fire. I feel very fortunate.
For the great unwashed, Butch nailed Monroe's tunes on the banjo better than ANYBODY, and fit Monre's music better than any banjo picker before or since.
you don't need to dis earl scruggs. hell he was one of the bluegrass pioneers and for the three finger style not saying snuffy dident make it up. who made it famous?
More more more....more talking AND more playing:-) Butch is one of the true keepers of the flame and his wisdom musicale is as valuable as his playing- thanks for including this!!
There was another melodic banjo player around the time that Keith came out named Bill Gokee (sp?). Ever heard of him. I think her used to play with Bill Harrell.
You're absolutely right. In my opinion, it's him and Bob Black--though Butch has a lot more drive in his playing (which comes from the fact that he's a master of Scruggs style as well, which Black never really was IMO).
I listened to the whole thing and this guy likes to hear himself talk way way to much.. Hes okay ,but I would never go to see him play anywhere.

Great, Great playing. I wonder how many people clicked off this video because he talks too much at the beginning. Over 4 minutes.

That was intentional. This is a video from Butch's website where he was giving some instruction on the history of his approach to fiddle tunes.

Great great melodics! Ask Butch if knows of a feller named Charlie Davis.
