I think I bought this album when I was a teen because I liked the girl grabbing her tit. Anyway, the music was just as good. My introduction to early Bob Seger. Despite how great he became, this is one of his best. You can just hear the wonderful rock and roll potential this man possessed. At first I thought he said the F word in this song but he actually said "funky world." "Tales of Lucy Blue" is also a great song from this lp.
This was so hot back in the late '60's when I was a Senior in H.S. Me and my friends strained to hear if he said funky world or f__king world. Now I know the words but the song was one of the best by the Motor City Madman. Some of the best rock ever. Thanks for the song.
@johnhharley48 Damn sure my favorite! If Bob had stayed with this exact up beat rock N roll killer sound right here... I'd be his absolute #1 fan hands down! I LOOOOOVE this track!
i found this 45 in a record store just outside of forestville maryland in the late 90's. it has a price of 49 cents marked on it & a drawing of snoopy. it is crystal clear. i'm assuming that the 49 cents was the original price.
i found this 45 in a record store just outside of forestville maryland in the late 90's. it has a price of 49 cents marked on it & a drawing of snoopy. it is crystal clear.
I used to listen to this track in my car on an eight track player at the South 21 drive-in on Independence Blvd in Charlotte and fantasize about playing a B3 like that.
I understand from previous posts that Bruce Springsteen has covered this tremendous song. Without having actually heard it, may I hazard a guess as to how Bruce "honored" this song? I suppose it started with a lengthy spoken preamble about his neighborhood and how much he loved to ramble and gamble and blah blah blah and there was this one girl that meant so much it made his voice get all gravelly and lah lah lah.........
@problem49 LOL Let me guess: not a huge Springsteen fan? I like some of his stories in his songs. As a writer myself, you look for influences wherever you can.
Yikes nice to see even the 70's had a walking ramblin gamblin cliche like the seeger system. Far more comparable to the 1910 fruit gum company than Springsteen but even that not favorably.
@feabas1 Just an FYI, this is not from the '70s. The song was released on 45 in February of 1968, the album in April of 1969. Being 13 and having a physically abusive parent, I related to the lines, "I was just thirteen when I had to leave home
Knew I couldn't stick around, I had to roam."
I don't really see the comparison to the '60s bubblegum pop band, the 1910 Fruitgum Co., but you are entitled to your opinion. I do remember that my classmates who liked bubblegum did not like this.
This is THE SHIT!!! You can't get Rock and Roll any better !!! The reason it is not on the compilation album is because of royalty disputes. As it was back then the "managers" wanted everything. They would put you on the road for months and take a percentage of everything that came out of you. The older the rock the bigger the con job by the "businessmen". That is why Little Richard was bitching up a storm a few years back, he hardly got anything for all the hard work he did.

Guys, leave The Boss alone, Seger and Springsteen are the two greatest minds in Rock and roll and always will be. I love both of their music, they are both great,
@doggskull I thought seriously about what you said. Then I listened to Rosalita. Sorry, can't go there. Seger got too darn sentimental, maudlin, and pretentious in his later albums.
Judging the fact that Bob Seger is from Detroit, this song may be inspired the music from the 70s show "The Hot Fudge Show" which was also taped in Detroit and featured Arte Johnson (later Larry somebody) and Seymour (think Dr. Teeth). Either way, It was inspired.
why is todays music so fucking lame? and the thing is, people actually like it! what the fuck!?!??! im fucking 16 years old and i listen to the old GNR and this for example, and you see 20 yearolds listening to that black eyed peas and all that fuckign shit they have now.
@skitzoooo There are good reasons to be bitter--Seger put out badass songs like this long before anybody had every heard of that guy Bruce whatever his name is, only to subsequently be considered by the general public one of his softy heartland followers. I'm offended that anybody believes Bruce has or ever had the raw fury Bob delivers on this track. Not even close.
sounds like you're a bit butt-hurt because seger never attained bruce-esque success. Actually bob seger's so called "HARD RAW FURY" songs never attained the success OR general acclaim that his slower ballad type songs did.
Bob Seger has also said that he was inspired by Bruce as a songwriter.. from the man himself. So maybe you should take this up with Bob?
@skitzoooo Never said anything about success; that's far from my point. And to be honest I really enjoy a lot of Bruce's music and appreciate his genuine rock and roll spirit. And I do acknowledge that the commercially successful Seger we all know and love would not have been without Bruce.
But there's reason to be pissed off when Seger is dismissed as another Springsteen-follower when you listen to songs this. If that's your message, go listen to Springsteen's version and tell me the same thing
@Sjack90 I honestly believe Like a Rock killed a lot of Seger's credibility, with the chevy commercials. Really though I've seen him called the poor man's Springsteen and that's annoying and untrue. I think Mellencamp deserves that title...
Really I just thought a lot of people here saying Bruce sucks and things like that are going a bit overboard.
@skitzoooo And just as a point of information, Seger's biggest hit was the cheesy Shakedown, his only number 1, which, if you ask me, is only listenable because of his signature energetic delivery. Not a ballad at all, and proof that success and acclaim doesn't mean shit; it's one of his worst songs and his single most successful.
Why is the Midwest the best place to grow up? I don't know... the Great Lakes, pontoon boats, BOB SEGER, euchre, Faygo POP, good beer... just to name a few..

@coachhrothgar449: Couldn't disagree with you more. Well actually I could. I disagree on the Springsteen sucking but can't disagree with Seger ruling.
@coachhrothgar449 Springsteen doesn`t really suck; I just don`t think he could come up with anything as funky as this!!! I like his stories in his songs, though....
awesome. it would be badass if you could post a studio version of rock n roll never forgets. all the live ones on youtube are a little off on the sound.

@coachhrothgar449: Couldn't disagree with you more. Well actually I could. I disagree on the Springsteen sucking but can't disagree with Seger ruling.

Yeah. Springsteen totally missed the energy of this song. The Live Bullet version owns.

@coachhrothgar449 WTF are you talking about, Bruce Springsteen is amazing. Why can't we enjoy both Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen. Jackass....

@coachhrothgar449 Springsteen doesn`t really suck; I just don`t think he could come up with anything as funky as this!!! I like his stories in his songs, though....

so true. This 2:22 single packs more of a wallop than anything ever done by Springsteen.

This is the song that got me hooked on Bob Seger... Those drums are hypnotic!
