They need to come up for a different form of unemployment/ welfare currency to be issued. Something like a cashiers check that can be broken down to the cent. It may cost alot to produce..... But if it couldn't be accepted for liquor, cigarettes, drugs, etc. .... it would last a hell of alot longer and wouldn't have to be issued as often. Being realistic, most people use government assistance as a way to LIVE... NOT as temporary help, as it should be used for.

Thanks for this post. I have been unemployed a year here in Portland and no matter what I do I cannot get work. There are no jobs here. I am not real lazy and look for work every day. For every interview I go on there are 300-400 people for the same job even if it is a bad job. Most jobs I do not even get a call back for. The call center I worked for left Portland to relocate to Arkansas to pay people 6.25 an hour when minimum wage here is 8.40 an hour. This was not my falt.
It really is disheartening how easily Americans can be turned agianst one another. On the street level, the most angry and hateful comments about the unemployed are not usually from the very wealthy but from the person whose neighbors are unemployed and he feels so superior because he still has his low wage job and is at a high risk of long term unemployment himself.

They are just not forced to buy insurance. Muslims believe that health insurance is “haraam”, or forbidden. Since you cannot force someone to do something against their religion, it should be quite obvious as to why they are excempt from buying insurance, if they don't want too. Unemployment keeps people from taking low end jobs. Even if you were an executive or engineer, you must be willing to take minimum wage. That also means scrubbing toilets or washing dishes. But if it couldn't be accepted for liquor, cigarettes, drugs, etc. .... it would last a hell of alot longer and wouldn't have to be issued as often. Being realistic, most people use government assistance as a way to LIVE... NOT as temporary help, as it should be used for.

Replubicans agreed to vote for an extension but only if 50% of it was funded by unspent stimulus money? Even Pelosi stated that the best way for the US to stimulate the economy was to grant the unemployment benefit extension... it's doesn't take a rocket scientist to wonder, then, why can't we use unspent stimulus money to pay 50% of this extension? I think it's because the Democrats will lose control on how it is spent: we Americans are stupid because we would probably save it and not spend.

Thanks for this post. I have been unemployed a year here in Portland and no matter what I do I cannot get work. There are no jobs here. I am not real lazy and look for work every day. For every interview I go on there are 300-400 people for the same job even if it is a bad job. Most jobs I do not even get a call back for. The call center I worked for left Portland to relocate to Arkansas to pay people 6.25 an hour when minimum wage here is 8.40 an hour. This was not my falt.

It really is disheartening how easily Americans can be turned agianst one another. On the street level, the most angry and hateful comments about the unemployed are not usually from the very wealthy but from the person whose neighbors are unemployed and he feels so superior because he still has his low wage job and is at a high risk of long term unemployment himself.
I suppose people will do what it takes to create a narrative to quell their deepest fears.

My mother was laid off her job after 25 years with no support AT ALL.... she had to wait 3 months for unemployment because she had to cash in her ENTIRE retirement after 25 years.... because of this.. I don't qualify for a DAMN thing for financial aid for college. Republicans make me sick to my stomach. If they keep this up, I will never vote republican for the rest of my life. After 2 decades of steady work I had to take a job that was 40% pay after 2yrs laid off again. There are no jobs left I can't even get a job at McDonalds. While these drunken pieces of crap sit on their high horses looking down on us knowing even if they get voted out they have benefits for life. i think in any nation it should be dependent on the person, so some may need benefits for longer for various reasons
the people need help to get jobs and out of a situation rather than forcing them too
you never know you might end up needing this sort of thing yourself one day
benefits have to cover at least the basic essentials, problem is that low paying jobs pay similar so there is no incentive to work but you cant give benefits that pay less than the basic breadline

Even though I'm working I do know lots of people who are suffering and can't pay the bills. The unemployment kept them afloat and they were far from being lazy. They would gladly take a lower paying job but they're just not there.

@haywire46 WE ARE IN A DEEP RECESSION. It's not like if they ended unemployment payments people would just get off their asses and find a job. If that were the case, unemployment would be easy to fix. The fact is there are very few jobs out there and people are suffering.
They need those checks, not to live it up, but to get by without declaring bankruptcy, or not feeding themselves, or not getting medical treatment. It's not a lot of money.

@micsc50 Yes I did know that. I did research that topic, yes they are excempt from buying insurance. If they choose too buy into it, then they can no problems. They are just not forced to buy insurance. Muslims believe that health insurance is “haraam”, or forbidden. Since you cannot force someone to do something against their religion, it should be quite obvious as to why they are excempt from buying insurance, if they don't want too. Again, please research before you make assumptions.

You are correct, unemployment benefits are temporary. 6 months max, but due to the recession, 9 months, unless you have more than 2 young children, in which case, the max a year if your income is low enough. Life is a bitch, yes...now what, should we just say ahhh fuck any kind of social saftey net? Your taxes go to countless social services for everyone, you can bear the 50$ being spent on helping your countrymen. If not, then that says a lot about you.

whether republicans are snorting cocaine of oil tycoon asses is irrelevant. the argument about overspending is still valid and should be considered. there is a time when certain cuts need to be made, and in a time of economical crisis, one needs to take into account that increased taxation is only an arbitrary painkiller (who makes the decision who should we tax more?).
on the other hand, currently unemployed people are not responsible for the crisis, but that's a different discussion.
