Kefalonia Forest Fire

We've only just come back from Skala / Katelios area. Gorgeous place but you can see the fires scars. Must of been well nice beforehand. The Island is fantastic & not yet over developed. Well worth a visit. first week in Oct 09 was 25-32 degrees C, second dropped to below 25 with 2 days of grey skies and rain with tempsn of 18/20. Well laid back place tho!!

I was in Skala when the fires were happening. It was sad to see my village up in flames. Soooo sad, I will never forget it :((

what a fuckin' son of a bitch was this gay who made this fire.. the wonderful landscape after the fire was destroyed end full of ashes. when i drove across it i was shocked very much!

it was horrible and i had to cry a bit cause i knew how it looked like before and knew that it never will be again.. and this year they tried to make fires in the same place again... damned idiots!!!

We stay in Aeolas beach appartments just a km out of the main town of skala.

We got evactuated out to poros at about 4 am...

But before this time, we had to take control coz Tompson left us! and the fire had come over to the beach on the plants bit...

Time in my life never to be forgotten about!

omg i was staying at my aunties apartments and we drove to see some other relatives on the other side of the island to see all the damage and had to stay on the other side as my auntys village was on fire. we got back and the beautiful ocean was covered with the ash that the wind brought from peloponiso....shame on those who started it....one of our family friends from a restaurant tried to catch one of those bastards

I was staying at the liana during the fire, it was terrible watching this massive fire spread down the hills and not being evacuated until 1am! Everything was back to normal by the next evening though and Skala was still in one piece, what a relief.

On july 27 i was in Skala and i saw peaces of fire on hil around skala..it was sad..

i stayed at crystal palace after the fires the complex was ok but the trees and landscapes around it were burnt

Was there for 3 weeks this summer, luckily my house was not affected but I know others who lost everything.

I arrived the same day as the evacuation. we lived at Villa Dizi we got evacuated at 1.30 am. but we got to a hotel in Poros. when we drow to poros the fire was just some meters from us

We know this part of Skala very well, we have stayed there plenty of times and we are going back in september. It must have been awful. It does look as though all the buildings stayed in one piece. What a shame. I hope it does not affect the tourism.

We were staying in Crystal Palace in Skala and were evacuated by First Choice... As we were only there for a week it put a bit of a damper on things, but we felt more for the locals. They did a really good clean-up job though, and I guess these things are pretty natural in the scheme of things. Thanks for the Video.

im in kefallonia at the moment but staying in argostoli so was lucky but after driving through skala today i was shocked at how serious it actually was.

I was up the road in Katelios during that eventful day/night!We were evacuated to the beach at 11.00pm and got the all clear to return to our rooms at 04.00am. You guys in Skala had it bad though! You were very nearly cut off with the fire surounding Skala! I've put a video on youtube showing the single engine planes dropping fire retarding powder, but i can't seem to find it unless i go to my sign-in! How do i get to show it publicaly? All the best from one Kefolonian veteran to another..

Yeah it was pretty scary, evacuated at about 1am, luckily we had a hire car so we drove up the road and stayed in a hotel overnight :)
