They don't actually fight in the wild. Bettas were bred to be aggresive, from less aggresive and less colorful wild species, and used for fights that were bet upon. So fighting them is technically not natural.

just make sure u do something, if u want two betta buy them at the same time so u can interduse them at the same time while there adapting to their new home together the longer they know eachother less the tiny fights. cause thier still gonna fight but remeber its their nature. Bettas fight like this in the wild. It isn't unlike how buck deer spar. It isn't harmful for them, so long as they aren't left together for too long in a too small tank.

The whole reason they have the large fins are for their breeding fights. As the fins get bit off, the fish that has lost its fins actually gets faster (less drag), so that they can swim away.

Winner gets the girl.

@Mrssd03 It is a big tank with a lot of vegetation....& they aren't very aggressive. One red, one blue. They will run into each other, flare, and then one swims off, & it doesn't take long for the 'loser' to find a hiding spot.

They have been in there about a month & @ week ago the Blue one had some evidence that he lost a fight. Now he is faster & he hides most of the time.

I expect (dunno) that when he heals they will start again. But until then I hope the winner breeds with one of the females

I also tried it with a Jack Dempsey (small one). For the first week or so the Jack Dempsey would run away when the betta flared up.......then the Dempsey figured out that it was all bluff.

On the plus side. I really dont think the betta suffered. It looked like it was short work.
