EU membership isn't the only issue UKIP are interested in. There's the climate change debate, proportional representation and many other issues.

You're making the assumption that nationalism has to be driven by ethnic identity. I'm talking about civic nationalism - a political / geographical identity based upon who was born here and adheres to our laws and customs (they can be any ethnicity). Of course the EU wants to erode British identity - it's an expansionist superpower so naturally its proponents want to manipulate us into identifying with an EU superstate rather than maintain independence.

But in the long term it is a foolish notion that people of several ethnicities and races will bind together and identify with an existing nations culture, institutions and history. You're making the assumption that nationalism has to be driven by ethnic identity. I'm talking about civic nationalism - a political / geographical identity based upon who was born here and adheres to our laws and customs (they can be any ethnicity). Of course the EU wants to erode British identity - it's an expansionist superpower so naturally its proponents want to manipulate us into identifying with an EU superstate rather than maintain independence.

I see the instant value of the political strategy of taking ethnicity and race out of the national equation all together. But in the long term it is a foolish notion that people of several ethnicities and races will bind together and identify with an existing nations culture, institutions and history. The truth of the matter is that the nation is inherently ethnic and racial.

The old trick of asking what British identity is, and by that sowing the seed of doubt about the whole existence of a British identity at large. But if that were true, and it is in fact no tangible British identity, perhaps you would care to explain exactly what identity Brits have and why?
And how exactly is ancient immigration an argument for a permuting wave of modern immigration?
