The tank isnt "huge" be whale standards. The tanks out the back that they are in most of the time between shows are only around 10-15ft deep and when your talking about an animal that can reach 25-30 feet long, its tiny and gives them no room to dive and they often get sun burn.
@hateseaworld well he does seem to have a good time im not saying to keep him locked up i agree with you that they should let him be free but hes not dieing in there and telling by your user name you semm to hateseaworld.but you cant do anything really. life goes on and to me that is a very happy whale
Its a she not a he. Her name is corky she was caught from the wild and all 7 of her babies have died in captivity. The people who say they look happy are the ones like you who dont know the facts. You think just because they jump up and down = happy.
@hateseaworld Actually these whales rarely, if ever, get sunburn. Shade is provided throughout the day, by structures around the tanks. In fact, I have not seen one recent case of a whale in the United States having sunburn. There is old Sea World footage from the 80's in which some whales have sunburn, and have zinc(I believe zinc is what's put on cetaceans to sooth sunburn) on their backs. I am not saying this to start an argument or anything. =)
@LightBlueFuture I understand why you believe all animal captivity is wrong. However the statement about sunburn in particular is not true. These orcas do not often get sunburn at all.
They do it you know what to look for, I saw a recent video and Nakai had sunburn on his head, I also saw some on Ike a while ago. The trainers use black zinc oxide to cover it up, one former seaworld trainer told how when applying sunscreen the whales skin would be peeling off in her hands.
The water is also clear and the tank walls painted blue which reflects light and can cause sunburn and damages eyesight (many captive orcas have eye problems)
@hateseaworld What is this recent video? Orcas also shed skin. And this appears as white patches, mostly on their melon, pectorals, and backs. You see it a lot on Trua and Nakai, and other younger whales. But adults shed skin too. It is also easier to see this under the water, rather than out I've noticed. I have seen recent pictures and footage of these whales. They don't have sunburn. And I'm VERY iffy about believing former trainers. Which orcas have eye problems?
@LightBlueFuture I feel like you are getting this information from extreme anti-aquarium sources. I've heard the same things from The Orca Project. It's just not something I'm prepared to all of the sudden believe just because a former trainer/trainers, most of whom were likely fired, says so. Afterall, you are not so quick to believe what any regular to the park would say, are you? I understand your passion, but I really urge you to look into this particular sunburn situation more.
@LightBlueFuture Now I am a person who gets annoyed at seeing a flood of debates on video comments. Lol. So if you DO wish to continue, I ask that you message me. However, I've really nothing more to say...er, I don't desire to say anything else, rather. But I'm not going to be a jerk, so if you do message me I'll answer questions/respond. I won't continue it here though, because I don't want to flood the comments.
I'll have to trawl back through all the videos I watched, it might take me a few days to find them, I'll send them to you when I do
Of course you'd be wary of the former trainers, but she wasn't sacked she left on her own terms, and i it makes sense bacuse they spend so much time at the surface and in shallow water.
They orcas that have eye problems include Corky II, Ulises, Orky II. Ive also noticed Takara has problems seeing trainers when they stand to her left.
@lahruhbo -Not to me. When lolita was captured 80 members of her family were killed many more trainers would have to die at least 3x get even close to what weve done to them its kind of hypocritical i want to be an orca trainer but i would much rather study them in the wild! no matter how many people die from them, there have been no attacks or even a death by an orca in the wild but many in captivity so either way there not meant for captivity and its still animal abuse unless their born there.
@ALoveForOrcas The thing about orcas never killing people in the wild was always weird for me. No, people have not been killed by orcas in the ocean, but then again, how many people swim with wild orcas on a daily basis? ;)
@Orcaplanet Lol! Yes I always find that annoying, but Sea World does that a lot with these podcasts and during the shows. DWS and stuff, they use the real names. "Shamu, shamu!" I'm like "Noooo, Corky." =P
or maybe your just retarded they never make the animals do anything and they live longer there and every animal that performs performs because they like it and the attention and do it on their own will
Actually, it is proven through Marine Mammal Inventory Reports that orcas & dolphins, similarly to elephants, live much shorter lives in captivity. Wild dolphins live an average of 30-40 years. In captivity they may make it into their teens. Wild orcas can live to be 100 years of age, but generally live to around age 50-60. In captivity, orcas live about 15-20 years. Plus, in the wild, they remain with their pods for life & in captivity, they are split up or removed from their family unit.

In response to this converstation, may I add my opinion? I think parks bring important attention to marine animals. Like many say, it's in fact true that if they weren't displayed and so popular with the public, they would face more problems in the wild. But, the education distributed at these kinds of facilities is dismal, and I believe it needs to be improved. More on my opinion, if you're interested, can be read on my page. I just want to say, I'm not necessarily for or against anyone here.=)

What I propose could take many years to evolve, the current stock of performing Orcas would ensure a progressive change in direction without causing any distress to Trainers Managers or the performing Orcas. This really needs to happen. Please make your responses contructive whether they are critical or not.
Cont' I believe that Seaworld as it is needs to change, It should stop training new young home bred young Orcas to perform, Ideall any new calves and young Orcas should be kept in a natural marine enclosure as a pod for rehabilitation, As a pod they'd learn how to survive. The current method of training young Orca by first containing them to remove their sense of freedom, denying the ability to hunt so they become dependant on humans is counter productive to the species, and an abuse of nature.
We all, I believe, have one thing in common here, we love Orcas and other Marine Mammals, So please discuss don't just block delete and thumbs down, it is very ignorant, and does not do you any favours, I want to hear you give a good defence as to why Captive Orcas should be performing circus tricks for profit, I do not want to hear because we love and care for them, or that you think it educates children how we should treat animals in the future. Captivity severely compromises their quality of life to
an unacceptable degree, through confinement in minuscule tanks. Such confinement is
often characterised by forced associations, sensory deprivation and adverse intrusion by
visitors. Marine parks can no longer justify their captivity under the false premise of
education, conservation and research. Today's society is sophisticated enough to
recognise these facilities as aquatic circuses. Jerye Mooney-WDCS
