Developers have not looked at Windows® source code. They have used the public documentation of Windows® OSes. They have made several tests to understand how Windows® works. In fact, ReactOS does the same things Windows® does, but not exactly in the same way, because they haven't the same source code.

I don't think they reverse-engineered the Windows NT kernel, that would be illegal. I'm pretty sure they studied how Windows works and built up 100% Windows-free code to build ReactOS. I believe it works well with applications do to WINE being used as the compatibility layer.

Am I the only one who realizes this breaks the ToU for the windows operating system they got the NT technology from, and most probably Microsoft being the way they are will not take this lightly?

However if they don't, I am definitely interested.

@ItchyFlea1 On the contrary, They took all of the open sourced elements from the windows code, and anything they can not use from scratch, they coded themselves. They are being very careful not to use ANY copyrighted code, and they have to be able to, and ARE able to prove it is their own code, so it is 100% legal. This is also why development of ReactOS is slow.

Who cares whether a computer runs on Microsoft, OpenSource or Mac. Just as long as the machine works. When a person chooses a car, he just wants to be sure it's reliable, that it does its job. **OK, in a certain sense I DO care--I care that the people developing ReactOS (AND Linux for that matter) will get the recognition they deserve. So well done guys. Let's have more Technology By the People, For the People.

But just in case you don't believe the "world" I have in mind is achievable, think of the quantum leap in knowledge (and it's easy dispersion) that was experienced when writing came to be. And another leap with the arrival of the printing press. And now, in our lifetimes, yet ANOTHER quantum leap. Imagine the possibilities!

Au contraire. I can't go mouthing off opinions, or even well researched facts. How could I be sure of their truth and value? Of course, many people HAVE done exactly that--our history books are full of them. But in the future, pursuits, whether of knowledge or technical development, will be group efforts. Powerfully beneficial synergies are the likely result. Individual greatness & heroism will be a quaint thing of history. The sooner the better--we've had nothing but f***-ups up to now.

How the hell do they get away with it? I think governments turn a blind eye, just as long as they get their cut through taxation from the fat profits software companies make. Here in Australia, drug dealers can claim for expenses in their tax returns--legal protections keep their drug dealing information from the Law Enforcement Agencies.

Nice toy, but Linux is way better, since it's already well established and not in alpha stage... I get the point of this, but Linux already has free software available to run Win32 apps.

I really like Linux too. Trouble is many people have grown up with MSWindows. It's the reason why workplaces choose Microsoft, even while knowing Linux and OpenOffice means a substantial saving. When I hear people say (for example) "Linux is crap, I took it off my computer" I can't argue with them. Any OS should "just work". And often Linux DOES "just work". But not always. Linux needs training to be fluent at. So PERHAPS ReatOS will be an answer, if not THE answer.

Besides, Patrick, Linux rarely runs Win apps well. Not without paying for a good program, which basically defeats the perpose of linux.

Linux is not crap, really. It's just disorganized. There are too many OSs, and then after that, there's so many display options, then there's the thousands of apps, and the fact that it is often quite buggy. What the Linux community needs to do is come together to form a unified party. Both Linux and Windows both have things that I like, windows just has more.
