  • Atlanta LOVED Skynyrd -- still does

  • I actually prefer this version to the Cream version-Much More Energy!

    M

  • Robert Johnson ceated this song, Clapton further developed it to a great version AND Lynyrd Skynyrd polish it to perfection. Skynyrds version is the best version of Crossroads in my opinion.

When opening for Eric Claptons US tour RVZ sad -We really like Clapton alot, but to night we gone kick his ass. And they did!

  • The BEST cover since CLAPTON and Cream!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well this was just awesome! But only thing that i couldnt heard like in Creams original version was the guitar and bass jamming with each other. I really missed that. But otherways just a perfect version. Thanks for the uploader. You are the man dude

  • just great..and leave it at that! xx

  • i went down to the CROSSROADS YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • This is Lynyrd Skynyrd covering Cream who covered Robert Johnson. This is so close to Cream's version. The original sounds like a totally different song. Not bad, just different. A Clapton cover seems to improve a song most of the time. He has a great musical sense. Look at the J.D. Souther songs he's covered. MUCH better than the originals.

  • You just have to appreciate it for what it is. Lynyrd Skynyrd obviously had a lot of respect for Cream, they covered it so closely. That's fine. There are a lot of covers done in the blues. I think they rocked it.

  • @luthierboy Actually, Cream's "Crossroads" is a cover of Robert Johnson - Crossroads.

  • ALLEN COLLINS WAS AWESOME EVERY SONG

  • cream version of the robert johnson classic by the Lynyrd fantastic

  • Nobody out sings or out plays RVZ and LS, just doesnt happen, never has never will.

  • NO!!!! It's a Cream Song!!!

  • Benefit concert t help restore the Foxx Theater. June 22-23 1976 .

    Forget Clapton

A Look up what Keith Richard said about the 1st time he heard Robert Johnson play

  • This is "les boules de chien" I saw Skynyrd at De Montfort Hall Leicester 14th February 1977 and to date the 3rd best gig I have ever witnessed (tipped into3rd by John Fogerty at Hammersmith Apollo about 3 years ago). I'll always remember the 25 minute rendition of "Freebird" with the little kid in the bass bin, and then waving the Confederate flag at the finale. Were any of you there???

  • Larkin Allen Collins, the greatest lead player EVER!!!!!!!

  • well this is Skynyrd playing it, so id say same song but with skynyrd's flavor mixed in with Rossington & his mate, Collins on guitars. id say true friends can do alot in this world

  • This is the first time i've ever heard this!

I allways swore that the Wheels Of Fire version could never be equaled.

    I stand corrected!!!

    Awesome playing.

    These guys nailed it.

    To give Eric credit,

he did pull this one off but could never repeat it.

  • @blitzman64 I gave this double album to my cousins in Massachusettes in 1976 for christmas-- they had never heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd,,,I grew up in South Carolina and I just couldn't beleive that back then,,,

  • Rush DOES a decent rendition of Crossroads, but not THIS good! Geddy Lee will NEVER be RVZ!

  • and who did clapton still it from idiot

  • sorry mate ,but they fucked claptons world up on this one

  • @hatfield11000 How so? I love LS, but the stole every lick Clapton played in Creams version. Idiot.

  • @rune2222 They didn't "steal" every lick Clapton played. They "covered" every lick Clapton played and added a layer of grit that makes it much better than Clapton's version.

  • @shotgunsteve93 I'll take this version all day long

  • The first time I heard this version with the double bass pedal my head freaking exploded. Hearing it again my head just freaking exploded AGAIN!!! All due respect to Cream for bringing it to the mainstream but Skynyrd took it five levels up. Southern is just in the blood baby.

  • skynrds great but this is pure RJ noone can bring it to life like him

  • This song originally came from the USA by way of Robert Johnson. Cream planted it in the UK and it took a band like Skynyrd to bring it back home where it belongs with some perfect southern fried jam. Freakin unbelieable !

  • both versions are great,Skynrd added a little southern fried rock tto it.great stuff.

  • Hot DAMN!!!

Give me a hot buttered biscuit to go along with that JAM!! This is the tightest performance of this song known to man! Sorry Eric and Cream. You guys are awesome too.....but with this performance, Skynyrd put the stamp of perfection on this one!

  • Cream does this song pretty good...but Skynyrd just makes it sound badass!

  • The older I get the more I appreciate the music of my youth... it comes out of the mists of memory and speaks gently into my ears like it was just yesterday and time never happened.

  • Listen to this in your car and it doesn't get much better.

  • Robert Johnson would've loved this, as he would've Creams'. RJ didn't have a Les Paul, or a Strat, or a Marshall stack, (or Peavey stacks, either). Write a song, dudes, and you will be ecstatic that anyone covers it!

  • A Robert Johnson classic....that Skynyrd perfected in this live performance. Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Gary Rossington, and Leon on Bass! WOW!! These boys put their stamp of PERFECTION on this very tight, mistake free performance.

    Period!!!

  • @skynyrdfreak43 never said so elegantly !!!

  • come on dudes..... u cannot compare this to original....

  • The drums on this track.. Kill!!!!

  • having seen both LS and Clapton live, my vote goes toRJ then LS by miles and I'm from the UK

  • having seen both LS and Clapton live, my vote goes toRJ then LS by miles and I'm from the UK

  • slightly better than Claptons live version. SLIGHTY !!!

  • @penntuckian , that's the difference in someone from the UK and someone from the South... You can't teach southern... either you are or you're not. People play like this on their front porches in the south...

  • @sepr8te1 Nice, great response! I saw Skynyrd 2 days before the plane crash in Lakeland, Florida. Everyone at school was bummed out 2 days later,

  • @penntuckian slightly my ass e.c. has in his heroin daze then get a grip

  • @joeyw30 Claptons version is legandary don't get me wrong, but i love this version skynard does better. (has in his heroin daze), what do u mean? I'm not trying to be a doucey....

  • I dont see how you guys say this is any different than creams version...these are pretty much the same exact notes EC hits live played the same way...Im a huge Clapton and Skynyrd fan and I see no difference from the two just shut up and enjoy the music

  • @jongo2011 exactly i hate it when people try to make it a competition. Both are amazing

  • Skynyrd rips up every thing they touch, including Clapton LOL

  • Sorry, Ed said "Allen knew every Cream song, note for note including all Clapton solos.

  • Yes, this is Cream's arrangement. I saw them in 1973 and they were third opening band. They got an encore and said "this is by the best band in the world" I mentioned this on Facebook and one of my friends is FB friends with Ed King who was in the original band as well as Strawberry Alarm Clark. note for note including all Clapton solos. Cool. I forgot which Cream song they played and Ed told me it was Crossroads and that Allen knew every Cream song

  • Chills down my arms !!!!

  • blows clapton's version away, not even in the same league they were all jealous of american bands like fag boy pete townsend and clapton about hendrix saying oh he was ours bullshit they we dusted their asses and still do musically and in every other way so go put on some wigs and makeup you fag limeys, america all the way '' noke cleveland

  • @jhnnookie65 fuck you im american and one of my favorite bands is lynyrd skynyrd. allen collins would fuckin kill you his hero was clapton. claptons my hero too so shut the fuck up hes the best all time. your no lynyrd skynyrd fan if u can talk shit about the greatest guitarist behind a computer screen pussy

  • @jumpmanJB23 "Fuck you Im American!!!!"

  • @KevinPringle79 me too thats amazing

  • Deadly, prefer it to clapton but not robert johnsons. still deadly tho yup yup!

  • They are clearly trying to copy the Cream version. It should be considered an homage to Cream. That said, Skynyrd blows it up!

  • the crossroads is where you sold your soul for music, right? Where are the people that seared this song into rock legend? I believe they are all gone....save one Gary Rossington and one Eric Clapton. Gary gave all his friends, Eric gave a wife and son. We all have our own crossroads - we all give something for what we love......especially when it comes to the mistress we all call "Music"

  • @hawk1866 Everybody dies sooner or later, me make the most of it , some spend their lives in quiet desperation awaiting the appointment.

  • In response to "DREWCAUSEY55" did u hear any "distant howl'in or bark'in??Seriously though.

  • these guys werent fn around

  • A flawless and searing version of this song by the boys; Artimus Pyle rippin' the skins on this one

  • Yes this song is all Allen Collins. He loved Clapton. Played the Firebird because Clapton played one. Same with the Explorer.

  • crankymrspounge, Your right. Obviously Allen and Gary playing together. Thanks.

  • you guys are all goof balls. Blues is copy cat and use as / morph to the trend. Has been since 1940.

  • Best cover evar

  • Is this all Allen's guitar on lead, or does Gary play any of the solo work?

  • @eewright2001 or Steve maybe

  • @eewright2001 twin leads

  • @eewright2001 All the solos are Allen's.

  • It's good all right! But you can't really compare with Robert Johnsson... that man is a genious!!

  • It is a Robert Johnson song - no doubt. But this perfomance is one of the best.

Ronnie's vocal is just perfect - as it allways was.

Just great.... and the guitar playing - excellent.

  • YES it is better than "slow-hands'" version.....his is good, but this is gut wrenching, get down, southern rock feelin' it rock. WHY DON'T WE EVER HEAR THIS ON FM RADIO? We hear every other Skynyrd song....why not this one?

  • best version of this song

  • *-*

  • Got that right brother

  • born in clarksdale mississippi here on june 26 1995 lived there till 2005 then moved here to allen texas, country boy at heart and I have been down to the crossroads

  • Robert Johnson would smile!!

  • Clapton is God!, this version is tight tho.

  • Allen Collins was absolutly the best guitar player alive in his time. Clapton had to have been impressed. RIP Brother.

  • I WAS THERE ALL 3NIGHTS AMAZING.

  • @mcgaheefamily Man lucky you

  • Um Im not sure this is skynyrd, OH WAIT!!!.....deedle dee deedle dee deedle dee deedle dee deedle dee deedle dee deedle dee deedle dee wandal da wadawandal dawandal dawandal dawandal da! yeah this skynyrd and it is better!

  • Better than clapton aint it!!

  • @rhjernigan Not quite, but it's pretty damn close!

  • @rhjernigan uh, no.

  • @rhjernigan Nothing beat the live version of Cream's "Crossroads." Eric Clapton was one with the guitar that night. One of the greatest live recordings ever.

  • @rhjernigan clapton is unbeatable on this song;

  • @TheGrayRevolution man, you make me smile.. ;-) clapton is like the ants singing clapping their feet what the grasshopper does with a gibson firebeird ...

  • @Abernis i don't get it.

  • @TheGrayRevolution they're different species .. sorry; he was great with the bluesbreakers - and after that he was too - but the linyrd are just further away ..way

  • @Abernis but u have to recognize that without clapton this version of the song would never have existed.

  • @TheGrayRevolution clapton, did his share of covered songs, and he has his share of songs he has wrote. but nothing matters to eric, after his son died

  • @TheGrayRevolution I'll give you that! ;-)

  • verry nice version lynyrd Skynyrd rulezz gypsi ass

  • I do believe Allen was a Clapton fan and there's nothing wrong with that.

  • man I loved Pyle's great drumming! real crisp sound!

  • blows cream out of the water!

  • @willwildo but but but..its a blues track lol....originally done by Robert johnson..its good an all but i think i prefer the original and blues interpretation than one done by a rock band..its differant atleast lol

  • 1976 they played 3 nights to record one more from the road.I was at thefirst 2 nights.I thought the FOX walls were coming down.they played there ASSES off. 2 of the best nights of my life will never forget it.

  • yeah its a robert johnson song but this is gotta be a cover of the cream version tis same tempo that intro sounded so ginger baker and im quite sure robert johnsons version doesnt contain double bass pedal

  • wow, hats off

  • Robert Johnson did backdoor man to i think!! asa far as clapton,.... if you listen here you can catch where clapton studied his licks!! lmfao!! if jimi hendrix was alive we wouldn't really know jimmy page that either!! america is blues!

  • @mbredeus How did Clapton get his licks from this when he did it years before?

  • @mbredeus - first of all, cream did this cover nearly a decade before skynyrd did this so how could clapton have studied these licks??!! Secondly, Page was a star in his own right before hendrix died in 1970, after having already released Zep I and II with III just around the corner with nearly a million pre-orders in the states alone...

  • brilliant version but for one as good as this listen to the live version by free kossoff nails it big time nowonder skynyrd were fans

  • Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best band ever hands down. Even The Who didnt want to go on stage after LS tore up the crowd. Rest in peace guys.

  • there bassist hella reminds me of robert booth or wtv from zeppelin

    there both fucking amazing!

  • dont you just hate it wen ppl think they know it all about rock n roll, lynyrd are an amazing band hands down all you haters fuck off wa u listenin to music for if all ya gunu do is be a lil bitch now go watch ur pussy shit :)

    LYNYRD :D

  • this song is too close to eric clapton and the powerhouse and cream's version to be any good.

  • @Tabla461 That is what makes it good in my opinion.

  • @floydwhitlock actually, after considering it, I'd say that I like skynyrds version better. Creams version has Eric Clapton's shitty vocals and guitar.

  • @Tabla461 i bet your parents are sad that they had you

  • @VoOdOcHiLe2309 my parents are irrelevant to eric claptons shitty guitar. my parents could disown me all they want and eric clapton would be just as shitty. so whats your point?

  • @Tabla461

    lol you just owned voodooman

  • @Tabla461 my point is you are an idiot, that is why i posted that comment, can you comprehend that?

  • ROBERT JOHNSON IS THE GRANDFATHER OF ROCK & ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I too was there. One of my fav memories (at least the parts I can remember. lol).

  • Lookin at that picture makes me say Damnit! I missed by 6 years anyway. Never will there be like this again!!!!!!!!Rosedale

  • thank you ronnie

  • the skynyrd version sounds almost identical to the cream version

  • It is a Cream cover for the music and a Robert Johnson cover for the vocals.

  • @RockNRollOverDose Hey Dummy, The words and music are copyrighted to Robert Johnson.

  • i was so there........

    feels like a dream........

thank God they saved the FOX and skynyrd lives eternally......

  • ronnie loved neil youngs music

  • in my opinion ed king was the best guitarist by far in skynyrd.

  • YOU JUST KNOW THATS STEVE rock on in peace old friend

  • Holy Shit!!

  • awesome

  • in my opion i think allen collins and ronnie van zant was the heart and soul of this band.

  • All of the guitar players were awesome. I was setting 3rd row center at the Fox Theater in Atlanta when this was recorded. Still one of the best concerts ever.

  • The Fox with all the Stars...

  • @Bluesman9830 I know THAT'S true!

This was one concert that a rock fan should consider him or herself blessed to have been at!

I was at one other concert which captured everything another band (REO Speedwagon) had to offer as a straight-up rock & roll band: when they recorder "You Get What You Play For" the year after Skynyrd released this!

In both cases some of the greatest moments ever captured live in all of rock & roll!

  • some virtuoso OR Neil young, that´s what i said.OR dicern Neil from virtuoso....

  • That LS guitarist and Leon as bassist are not as widely revered as others is a shame. While I love Hendrix as much as the next person, but Hendrix was not the be all and end all of the guitar world. Sometimes I wonder if it's the unknowing that cite Hendrix simply to appear knowledgeable, simply because it's all they know, or as a name to contribute to a conversation.

  • DAMN! I knew from the title that this was going to be a cover, and that it would be a damned good one so I'd better listen to it -- and I was right so I'm glad I did!

  • ed king was the best guitarist in skynyrd but that is my opinion. steve could throw down. the boy is a genius!

  • @salamonetalton And Did you Know Steve and Ed have the same exact Birthday?...September 14, 1949?...Ed Said.."I"d rather play Freebird 10 times in a row than try to play "I KNOW A LITTLE" Steve Gaines parts are a bear to learn!..A true musical genius...

  • @SteveGaines...thats weird huh? i always thought that was the funniest thing...not really many people know that

  • steve could go the distance--allen was good but short on response------rip

  • most of the Skynyrd songs are from Allen´s guitar, how you define who is better guitarist?some virtuoso who play all licks in microseconds or Neil young?

Allen and Ron is the Skynyrd and the real FREEBIRDS

  • Neil Young a guitar virtuoso? Really? Sir David Gilmour comes to mind before Neil Young in that regard, but again, it's subjective.

  • Great acoustic player! Not the greatest lead ever. Steven Stills was probably more of a virtuoso then Neil.

  • @jpage1100

Personally I am not a huge Neil Young fan -- while I like him, I don't love him.

Virtuoso: I think I may have said this already, but that would be David Gilmour. I think most will agree.

  • cool version

  • not trying to discredit Allen Collins cause he is indeed an outstanding guitarist, but Steve Gaines was the better guitarist in Skynyrd

  • It's all subjective ... a matter of what you prefer, so you are not discrediting anyone. LS gave us three guitarist to choose from, and personally I'm a Gary fan.

  • Allen Collins will always be my favorite. The band could never be the same without him and Ronnie. He could sustain notes for days. He was incredible on rythym. He was awsome with the tremolo which was hard to keep in tune at that time. I skip through to the solo on Freebird all the time. Him and Gary were great when playing dual leads like Working for MCA. He was killer on the Wah[ The Needle and the Spoon].

  • @jpage1100

And that's why God gave Lynyrd Skynyrd THREE guirarist -- something for everyone.

I cannot provide a technical reason why I love Gary's playing so much -- it's just his sound that I am drawn to ... soothes me.

  • I believe Leon was a few steps ahead of his time. The lines he was laying down for the 70's were incredible in my opinion.

Allen Collins should indeed be included in any serious "best of" conversation.

  • Why isn't Allen Collins included in the conversations of great guitar players?

    The boy could jam

  • the guy who did this song was robert johnson the king of delta blues

  • I saw Allen Collins play this a few times and he plays it better than Clapton mainly because he doesn't make all those retarded "fuck faces" expressions that Clapton always makes...

Allen always looked like he was having fun playing this tune. Clapton's version is OK but he's kind of gay.

  • This aint a Clapton/Cream song this a Robert Johnson song...

  • true. it's the cream arrangement though.

  • technically, but Clapton perfected it for modern times. But I must say I do like the Robert Johnson version in its own respect.

  • Amen!

  • @jst928994 exactly right...although who has the best version? I dunno..Allman Bros smacked this song out of the park when they did it live at the Filmore...who knows...

  • @jst928994 Of course it's a Robert Johnson's song, But Skynyrd did the Cream's version.

  • @jst928994 After this performance at the Fox, it 's a Skynyrd song. They owned this one.

  • @jst928994 About his "deal"

  • agüesome! jajaja

  • Comment removed

  • Cream, Clapton, etc. were the creators of the song and we can't take that away from them...BUT as Clapton said numerous times "Skynyrd is AWESOME!"

  • Leon does not get enough credit for his playing. The whole band was friggin' awesome ;)

  • Just as good as Creams but fuller and who can sing like Mr. Ronnie Not E.C

    RIP Boys

  • ooosh, skynyrds version is beter,,,

  • @flyfish777 better haw did get that note for note Cream

  • @flyfish777 Everything is better Skynyrd style
