  • I'm so glad this was captured on film. This man has impacted so, so many lives. RIP Jonathan Larson.

  • Magic.

  • @nicklerew Agreed. Absolute magic.

  • <3

  • 1 person has no taste.

  • @Sallieeeeee I know, right? I was wondering who the one person was who didn't like this. I understand the recording is rough and the sound is harsh and all that, but hell--this is Jonathan Larson himself singing this. This is history, and the guy's dead. This is about all we have as outsiders looking in. So what is there to not like here?

  • i didn't know. but i am so glad i do now.

  • Freeze the frame

    Back it up!

    Try to refocus

    Before they wrap it up!

    FAVORITE PART!

    I love Tick... Tick... Boom!

  • @Sallieeeeee I'm 14 and love every bit this guy wrote since I was about 3 or 4 (or since I can remember). He died before I was born but I still can sing every song from Rent, Tick Tick Boom, etc. by heart. Fucking legend. A shame that here in Germany no one has ever heard of Rent.

  • I just cried.

  • This was filmed on my 2nd birthday. I was born September 25th, 1989

  • Too much people are having success only when they're 6ft under ...

  • This man is a Genius

  • Incredible! Thanks SO much for uploading!

  • I finally saw RENT live and I never realized how powerful it was on stage. RIP Jonathan Larson! LA VIE BOHEME!

  • rip j.l 15 years ago today. :(

  • this made me sob uncontrollably, as it was a reminder that the man that i have looked up to and aspired to be like actually lived.

if i ever get to be anywhere near as talented as him, i'll be happy.

  • I love this show. I love this man. This is a beautiful video, bad as the quality is. Thanks so much for posting this.

  • I love this show. I love this man. This is a beautiful video, bad as the quality is. Thanks so much for posting this and Sunday.

  • i liked tick tick boom more than rent

  • @bicycledays I think it's more believable because it's a true story and there aren't any mantras.

  • Look at around 0:30 - definitely Roger Bart!

  • Ummm... is that Roger Bart singing in the background?? Roger was a good friend of Jonathan's and sang with/for him many times. I feel like it really looks like him and think it is...

  • Not a good singer, but an BRILLIANT lyricist and playwrite.

  • Where did this video come from and is there more?!? Really, thank you for posting!

  • He's so full of passion. I'll see ya when I die Jonathan!!!

    Thank you, Jonathan Larson. :)

  • They're singing, "Happy Birthday"

You just wanna lay down and cry

Not just another birthday, it's 30/90

  • god he was an absolute genius.

  • May he RIP. You are amazing, man.

  • Thank you, Jonathan Larson.

  • I am so glad I found this version of the song <3

The same feelings he's describing with the age 30

    I'm having with age 20 -- and I was born in '90

so I feel a special kinship with this song

    <3

  • I love Tick, Tick.... Boom! And I love Rent. It's such a shame he died >.< Just think of how much more amazing musicals he could've wrote. Genius.

  • this man is my hero

  • this man is my hero. i dont know how many times ive said that on this video. but every time i see this i cry. for some reason, i feel more attached to him than anything else in the world. thank you, jonathan larson. you truly did something amazing. and im sure you're looking down on earth with pride. i love you.

  • I saw the RENT documentary. This guy was great. To bad he died a few months before I was born.

  • @WaffleTelevision, I was almost five when he died.

Just another month, and I would've been.

  • I wish i'd have gotten the chance to meet him. He's such an amazing composer, i don't think musicals would be the same without him.

  • saddest story i've ever heard in my life. he died, on the opening night of his masterpiece. he didnt even get to live for that. he lived on the verge of poverty to put on "rent" for us.

  • He's so amazing.

It feels so strange to actually see him perform, it seems like all we know of him is the stories people tell and RENT.

  • I love this guy. This was such a loss !!!!! He is one of my favorite people !!! His creations are so amazing !!!! Thanks Jonathan Larson !!!! :D

  • he is my favorite composer by far.

  • MY IDOL OMG!

  • AWESOME SONG!

  • he could really sing!

  • i want to see tick tick....Boom! live :(

  • Look for local productions. I was lucky enough to find one at a community college around me. I honestly didn't think I'd ever get to see it live, but was shocked when I found out they were putting it on.

  • aww... I love him so much!

he's such an inspiration and did so great music!

it even gave me goosebumps the first time I heared him singing and saw him playing piano in this video... a genius...! RIP Jon

  • May he rest in peace.

  • sure wish we could turn back the clock and save this guy! I think about it everytime I play one of his songs. God bless Jonathan!

  • wow, what a performer!

  • Yes Carsonmaier14 that IS weird !

But this is a grat video of a great man indeed

  • oh. well... haha sorry.

  • I love this man. No joke, Jonathan was my first word. after seeing rent for the first time.

i love him. hes like a dad to me. even though we've never met. is that weird? i think nowt.

  • one of the best videos on youtube.

  • you can just see how much engergy and love he put into this song..and really all of his music. i love you jonathan larson rip.

  • talented..legend

  • God, Jonathan is such an inspiration!! RIP

  • what song is this?

  • 30/90

  • Amazing!!! you really see the desperation he felt about being 30 and going nowhere.

  • thank you for continuing to push me in my career and giving me inspiration to do so. thank you for being an inspiration to everyone and thank you for truly being such a huge influence into musical theatre !!

  • Such a talented man his legacey still lives in R.I.P. jonathan larson

  • "Clock is ticking, that's for certain"

^I love how he alludes to two of my absolute favorite fantasies. And that is such a clever line, taking into consideration both the double meaning as his clock ticking down as he gets older (*SOB*!) and the crocodile having swallowed the clock in Peter Pan...don't know if he meant it like that, but it so works! Anyway, I LOVE this video. Raul is great, but there's something unbelievable about actually SEEING Jonathan.

  • Jonathan Larson was such an amazing compset. A musical Einstine if you ask me. Way to go Jon! I did a report on him for drama he's such an insparation. I looked in the discription this was only about 5 years before he died how sad :(

  • what an inspiring person.

  • completely blew me away. rest in peace.

  • My hero<3

  • I'm crying watching this. when did you film this?

  • I got to see this play in a pretty small venue that really set the cramped tone for his journey. It was great.

  • i like the tick tick boom off broadway cast soundtrack, but seeing and hearing him play it...it's amazing

  • thank you Jonathan Larson

  • I'm crying watching this. Amazing.

  • AWESOME!!!

  • Hi, Jonny! I'm korean, 19-year-old. I'm loving you so much. I'm so sad cuz there's no jonny, no my lover in the world! i wanna go to broadway so that see a Rent, Tick...Tick...Boom! Thank you for giving me your musical.

  • tick...tick...BOOM isnt on broadway, never has been. RENT cam off broadway in September 2008, sorry, but RENT is on tour w/ members of the OBC cast so b happy!

  • it WILL get back on broadway. HAVE HOPE!

  • Its coming to the west end!!!!!!!!

  • I agree, being 30 is gonna suck, just think you're 10 years closer to 40 and 10 years closer to death

  • speachless... it meakes me cry everytime.

  • OMG THIS IS AWESOME! Him actually playing it!

  • Thank you Jonathan Larson! R.I.P! <3

  • I am getting misty eyes. Absolutely can't believe such passion and such talent was in one person and he left us before we could get more

  • he is such a genius! if only he could see how great of a success his musicals are.

    RIP Jonathan Larson

  • he does see it :]

  • wow. i cant believe it. this is fantastic. THANK YOU! jonathan larson forever!

  • Best version of this song. PERIOD.

  • the guy was a fucking genius. it's a shame that most people don't even know he had other things before RENT. :/

  • @Sallieeeeee You can't deny though that RENT is fucking amazing.

  • @Jcthefluteman It's so true but I wish that 14 year old kids that are like "OH MY GAWD RENT IS SO AWESOMEEEE" knew about this, too.

  • @Sallieeeeee I definitely agree.

  • @Sallieeeeee Exactly. I don't think anyone can truly appreciate Rent until they know the real works of Jonathan Larson. What's makes the story of Rent so special is the story of its creator!

  • the world lost an amazing talent the day he died. :(

  • i agree totally. He is truly an inspiration.

  • @elphabaandrent you are so right there.

  • @elphabaandrent I just can't stop thinking of the beautiful music he'd still be writing if he was still alive :(

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • Jonathan is such an insparation to me, he has changed my views and life in so many ways. I cant even express the way I feel about his music and work and story. For all of those who say rest in peace to Jonathan, I think it is very wierd for you to say that. He is very much alive through his music and in our hearts.

  • Thank you Jonathan Larson and thank you for posting this. It is so amazing.

  • He was SO talented, and he truly was the future of theater. His death was such a tragedy.

RIP. And thank you, Jonathan Larson

  • his story is so sad. he's so amazing!

RENTat capitol performing arts center HBG

  • you are a very lucky person and good luck with the school edition

  • I am doing a short "Documentary" on Jonathan for school and I don't know what I would have done if I actually got to see more pictures and learn more about him and his family. You are very lucky. = ) Break a leg.

  • apsolute genius this guy changed my life

  • RIP Jonathan Larson

    Thanks for everything....

  • This is amazing! I searched forever for the CD, and finally found it! Now to see Jon perform it....wow. Incredible! He has inspired my life through RENT, and now through this. It would have been so humbling just to meet him. His work is amazing. To the poster, thank you; to the videographer, thank you; and to Jonathan Larson; Thank You so much!

  • somehow I can see the warm and nice heart of Jonathan, not only his passion. He always makes me humble and better person.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

... and thank you, Jonathan Larson.

  • I would like to thank the poster and whoever filmed it in the first place. I was 9 when RENT came out and though its subjects of AIDS went over my head a bit, I felt the spirit i havent felt since.

  • he's just phenomenal! it's so weird watching him perform, if you know what i mean, like he actually did exist. i wish i could have met him.

  • "turning 30 in the 90s, bang your dead what can you do?" its weird to think how accurate he got it; he turned 30 in 1990 obviously, but he died so suddenly just 6 years later. he was such a genius! THANK YOU JONATHAN LARSON. (-':

  • I bought this CD! I love it!

  • he's So passionate, i love him.

  • This is incredible!!!!!!

  • apsolute genius

  • I've played Jon in TTB before and always had wondered what it would have been like to see him perform 30/90 in his own words, his own way...

This has so much more life and love than I ever imagined.

I know its been said to death, but TY Johnathan.

  • *Crying*

  • A GENIUS!!!!, God Bless You Jonathan!!!!
