  • Cheers GILKSY for all the infos, no ylod here, just ps3 sounded like a jet engine on full fan constant, couldnt watch blu-rays like it =/ stripped down, new artic thermal paste, and jobs a good'n, ps3 been on for 5 hours and its as silent as when i brought it =) ... sonys messy thermal paste job was embaressing to see, more paste on sides of chip than on the top of it lol

  • Thank you so much Gilksy for this informative video!! I revived my PS3 that I've owned since 2007. For those who want to know what I used as far as thermal compound goes, arctic silver 5. All in all I spent a total of 35 bucks on thermal compound, a heat gun, and torx screwdriver kit. Thanks again and good luck to all! -fOxTrOt6024

  • why is my 40g difrent

  • @mac10fan09

mine was different also, 2008 uk 40gb ps3, had a black psu and the blu-ray drive cable is underneath it, also has some metal shield over the blutooth\wireless card, still, it all comes apart the same way, more or less just unscrew everything lol got mine working fine today

  • you have helped me thank you

  • hello everyone! i got a question: My ps3 got overheated (red light, i cant switch it on) and i´ve been searching how to repair it, do i have to do something with the fan? how can i clean it?? THX

  • im just gonna get an xbox 360

  • my 40gb doesnt look like that, the power supply is black and the its modeled differently

  • I fixed mine, using the other videos... then after a few weeks it went again.. so I fixed it again. Now it's on, but now it doesn't read games. Anyone got any ideas?

  • @davidtatey ignore me. I've sorted it. I checked that I had connected the cables up, and I had. So I formatted the HD.

  • @gilksy1 since I am very clumsy, and my PS3 is hopeless, would you fix my YLoD if I sent it to you with pay?

  • @FSX56 Just follow the video! :) It's easy. If I can do it, you can. You just need everything mentioned in gilksys pdf. :) I've fixed mine (a 40gb) and a friends 60gb using the videos :)

Or google console repairs, there's loads of companies out there that do it (usually for under £40) and they give warranties.

  • Super Anleitung!!! Hab das nun schon das zweite mal nach diesem vid gemacht....nach dem erstenmal lief die ps3 1 Jahr ohne probleme nun leider ein zweites mal ylod. Mal schauen wie lange sie diesemal durchhält^^

  • I LOVE YOU IN THE MOST GAY HOMO WAY POSSIBLE!

  • Thanks Gilksy for the tutorial.

I've followed the steps and it worked fine for me.

Just a question: After the reflow, the PS3 fan seems to be louder (I mean, stronger) than the past. During the process, I removed all the old thermal paste from the CPU/GPU and from the fan. I used the Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal paste on the CPU/GPU, which seems to be one of the best available.

Why could be doing this? Haven't used enough thermal paste? Have used more than enough?

    Thanks,

    FMatiello

  • This is the second time a fucking YLOD happens to me -_-' FUCK YOU SONY and thanks Gilksy1 =)

  • @Witchcraftist Second time? Today i got my 4th YLOD! but my insurance will pay for a refurb 60Gb like always :)

the weird thing i noticed is.... all my past Yloded ps3's got the YLOD exactly after 1 year and 2 or 3 months???

and yes, i use my Ps3 like a bitch.. 24/7 so im not mad at you Sony

  • Thank you Gilksy, I fixed my ps3 following your instruction, thanks for putting up the 40 gig version cause I would have been lost, you're a star...p:s I used copper shims on mine too, it's meant to reduce the heat by a further 20%....thank for your time.

  • Question. How important is the heatgun? I have everything, but that.

  • @ratede91 you could use a blow dryer (hair dryer)

  • Alive and kicking !!!!!!!!!!! You're the best !! thanx a lot for sharing your videos and your excellent advices !!

Greetz from France, you've got a new fan !

  • The beast has risen ! Thank you Gilksy, and most of all thanks to my grandfather for helping me repair it ! Now my quest shall be to find somewhere to sell it :)

  • wow thankyou so much for your videos, i had the YLOD happen to me a few dats ago and just thawt i would attempt to fix it myself first! following your vids i managed to fix my ps3! only took me about 3hrs lol but thanks so much! very pleased! ps. do you know if its a perminant fix? or it may happen agian?

  • Just got a second hand 40 gig model from a boot sale for 30 euros. on inspection inside it has no wifi/bluetooth card. Will i need this to use the ps3 or do the remotes connect to a different part inside the ps3?

  • is the hard drive for the PS3 the same hard drive for an hp mini?

I have the old HD 4 PS3 and need 1 for the mini.

maybe they used it for spare parts.

  • Hey dude, need your help. I was using my ps3 last weekend and now when i turn it on ( 5 days later ) it turns off like in a second. Pleas Help me dude, i am a desesperate kid o.o

  • Gilksy is my new hero! My 40GB PS3 ylod on me a week ago & thanks to his tutorial, a little bit of elbow grease & guidance from the Big Guy upstairs I was able to fix the problem with little hassle. You have saved me $157 & a two week waiting period! Thank you so much!

  • I have a 40gb ps3, and instead of having a heatplate attached to the fan, the fan is a seperate unit. Next to the fan, I have dual heatsinks lying there that kinda fit into a square hole. Also, on the smaller chips as shown in your other videos, I have none of the "heat transfer pads" that cover them...

    am i missing something?

  • Can you please make a video on how to fix this version? My friend gave me one amd it has ykod my computer maitenance teacher said he would fix it but he doesnt know the exact problem

  • I fixed my PS3 tonight I spent a few hours going through your tutorial. I have 40 gig so had 2 jump between ur feeds as ur 40 gig only includes the fan section. The PDF differs from the utube on regarding which side of the motherboard to heat Playstation will charge £110 to fix. I paid £12 for a heat gun and £ 5 for the thermal compond, and alcohol cleaner etc (all e bay) so you have little to lose. I feel really pleased with myself. GILKSY CHEERS MA MAN. HAIL HAIL

  • ahh fuck that dude. ill probably just end up breaking something $175 for playstation to do it.

  • @lmaoyourface08 you sound like me XD

  • omgod

I afraid about doing such things !!!

  • i did this today and it actually worked! :D

  • Followed the guide and have a working PS3 unit. More importantly Fallout Saves and others. Thanks for these Gilksy.

  • I have just spent the last 3 hrs taking apart my PS3 whilst listening to Coventry losing against Leicester........I DONT CARE BECAUSE............My PS3 is now working......Thank you Gilksy......YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • @EnergySolarStar mira tarado. este video solo es para demonstrar como desarmar el modelo 40gb. si huvieras nacido con cerebro te darias cuenta que aqui NO ensena el processo de como aplicar la pasta y el processo de reflow. SOLO ENSENA COMO DESARMAR SI NO ENTENDISTES LA PRIMERA VEZ...... thanks alot Grilsky :) Keep up the good work m8...

  • i dropped my ps3 and i dont have to do the first bit as case is broken and slides on and of with out undoing the screw or breaking or doing anything to the warrenty seal :D

  • Hey, i've had my ps3 reflowed by a friend and now the Ps3 desyncs my controller and Bluetooth. Do you think theirs a loose connections? and will opening it and finding it fix the issue?

  • this and the long 10part tutorial helped me so much. i would have lost it so many times if i were you^^ You're da man!!! thanks a ton!

  • I just tried this two days ago and it worked... but with reassembly I now have like 7 screws leftover :P Doesn't matter. Thanks so much for this video!

  • why does mine look so different inside

  • Great video! Question...After I've reassembled my 40GB the front panel buttons no longer work (power, eject). Any tips on how to trouble shoot this? I see two little spring looking metal contacts on the main board that look like they're supposed to contact with some metal bits underneath the top shell. Everything looks intact and undamaged but the buttons don't function.

  • do u whant me to kill my baby for opening it like that man its better to spend 1,000$ for buying a new one

  • Oh man thank you so much, watched this video made my release 40gb PS3 back 2 Life!!!

  • good contribution my friend and I really appreciated, but will you answer my question q after I took the steps properly, this problem can happen to repeat the red light? I am new to this and I think it does not hurt to ask.

    greetings from Venezuela

  • So what do you do with the ribbon when you're ready to reflow it?

  • just to let you know, following your instructions, my ps3 stayed fixed for almost 6 months. ready to go again. thanks for the video help.

  • Just used your tutorial to fix my ps3. I forgot to take out the battery, so it exploded in the oven. Pretty stupid. Just had to put in a spare battery and now it's working just fine. I hope for a long time. Thanks for making these videos!

  • hey my friend ... i repaired it and i have to say : thank you for the nice month..

soo now my ps3 got the ylod again .. do you think that its senseless to do it again ?

i dont know .. maybe its better to buy the slim ..

would he do anything else than you in this video ?

would be nice to get an answer ..

  • Just completed the reflow on my PS3 40GB using this, and your other guides.

It booted up just fine. Thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom.

I'll update when I get the YLOD again, which I understand is inevitable without a reball :(

  • UPDATE:

Just got the YLOD again, a little over a month later. I'm reflowing it again as I type this.

Debating on just picking up a new PS3 Slim :(

  • Comment removed

  • My system doesn't have the YLOD but the fan does seem the be pushing itself lately. So I want to replace the thermal paste with Artic Silver 5. My question is I can just replace the thermal paste and put it back together? And do you only use the heat gun if there is only YLOD?

  • If your wifi/ bluetooth dont work, you have to reopen the ps3 en check that your wifi/ bluetooth module is properly connected.

  • What paste are u talking about @ 10:35 ?

  • @hellolms I suggest you open it back up and plug in the connector you forgot to plug back in.

  • @Bekka077 I figured it out. One of the metal clamps in the front were bent so they weren't connected to the touch sensitive pad.

  • @gilksy1 when is the reballing video coming?

  • erm im confused i got the ylod n tokk everything and detached everything off so now my touch sensative 40 gb wnt wrk the touck sensopr n it wnt respond 2 a usb controller

  • @CarDoseS The heatsink paste could've got it.

  • @PS2Gameplays The problem was we didn't take off the hard drive because in the video there's none!

  • @CarDoseS Oh :) I always take my hard drive out first :) I disassembled it today. Cleaned it inside out and there. Another 8-10 months of YLOD free gaming :)

Can you shed some light on whether the power supply of the PS3 40gb is a universal power supply 100v-240v? Mine is Japanese and I want to take it back to New Zealand.

    Thanks

  • I finally got around to reflowing my PS3 and IT WORKED!!! but then week later it YLOD'ed again. so now im fixing to reflow again this time using the lead free flux pen. Will using the flux pen help it to last longer? Or is there anything else i can do to get a more permanent fix? Any response will be greatly appreciated. and i cannot thank u enough for these videos. u r saving alot of ppl the hassle of sony. once again thank you.

  • I cannot for the life of me unscrew the first screw. The one under the warranty sticker. Pleeease help. It is tight as hell. Any suggestions?

  • hello Gilksy, i fixed my ps3 40g for the third time today, its working again. The two times, it was working for 8 days and got the ylod again. Do you have an idea about what can be wrong in my fixing? I used the artic silver. Next time, i will use akasha, lol. I hope i can fix it for more long time.

  • @zabounet1 Yeah im having same issue. First time i didnt use flux pen. now im getting ready to do again this time using flux pen hoping this will last longer. first time it lasted a week..

  • @zabounet1 hi has it broken down again cause if this works and mine is fixed i might get rid of it quickly and get a new 1

  • @lilzad0 hello Now it s working for 1 month I think the third time i was eating little bit more near and more long but my eater is 400°C, that s why i did it carrefull the two first times. I dont know yet how long it will stay, but i m happy every day i can play again. And for cheap!! Anyway, if it happen ahain, i will fix it again, now i know the way good. Good courage if you do it too.

  • @zabounet1 found out wat was wroing with mine my power supply is fuked so i can either buy a new power supply which is bout £40 or buy a new ps3, however i think i am gna buy a new ps3 incase i have some other problems with this 1

  • Just got the YLOD! again

  • Thank you, it worked perfectly. But unfortunatley 2 people think that this video is not helpful!

  • My FAT 40gb PS3 is the newer version and the the clip underneath the Bluray drive shown in your video is under my power supply. What do i do?

  • @CrazyPS3 hope this helps watch?v=EvVH5sntm1w&feature=related

  • hi my 40 gb ps3 does not have the small rectangular heat sink pads on the mother board on the side opposite of the cpu's. is that normal?

  • hi, what is the best temp for the CPU AND GPU?

  • No I have a 40GB. The inside is different. PS is black not grey, wireless card looks way different, and mobo doesn't come off the casing unless I remove the heatsink screws first. And my heatsinks are separate blocks and not part of the protective casing attached to the fan like in this video. This actually looks like a 60 or 80gb.

  • THANK YOU i finally fixed mine this actually works thank you sooo much

  • I did this and it worked the whole thing booted up quietly, and didnt load up screen it stuck for awhile and now it says cannot find hard drive every time...

  • GREat job gilsky

could not have fixed my ylod w/out your amazing guides

    thanks

  • this doesn't look like my fat ps3 40gb. the inside is different.

  • Fixed and it works!!

    Thank you very much :)

  • you cant trade it in without the sticker right?

  • @buggeazy102 right! they when you take off the sticker you went inside im gonna keep fixing on mine until i get up the money for a slim i talk to the guy at gamestop he said even if you trade it you wont get much for anyways 50 or 60 bucks if your lucky so ima deal with this one get a new one then trash the old one

  • can I have a free ps3? plz lol

  • Gilsky help! I have followed your way to fix a ps3. I have a 40gb ps3 it never just shut down on me. My problem happened after a disc got jammed in the BR player. I have fixed that problem as well but I still get ylod when I try to turn it on. One thing I noticed in your video is the ps3 tried to turn on when you hit the eject button my ps3 doesnt do this. It just beeps. If you have a clue on what my problem is Please let me know.

  • Hey I have a question umm if the problem is the gpu and cpu units this means that there is nothing wrong with my Hard Drive right?

  • Thanks Alot Followed What you said and its back up & running so thanks alot!!

  • my ps3 workin back, GENIOUS !!!!!!

  • nevermind, it played for about ten minutes and then said it was getting hot and to turn it off but then before i could it just shut off and blinked the red light. i guess maybe i didnt hook the fan up right or something but i dont know what i couldve done wrong. please help if you can anyone!!!!

  • just used your reflow method and it worked! I wanted to use the flux but couldnt find it anywhere. gonna order some off the net and use it if this doesnt stay fixed for long.

  • how come the button where you turn on the ps3 doesnt work when i touch it, both lights are red.

  • lol mine got the YLOD again today, only been a week since i fixed it.

  • @Tak3ItEasy mine to it was up a runin good for a messly week then back to red light ..i operated on this thing 3times the fist time i did it wrong the second i didnt heat it up long enough 3rd time lasted one week im fuckin tierd of this shit im gonna have to just get up the money for a new one or give up playin video games all togather an find a new hobey

  • this is crap.

  • Followed this excellent tut in conjunction with the pdf file and fixed my YLOD!

    Thank you so much!

  • finally fixed mine today, so happy! Nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment knowing sony didn't just rip you off for an extra $150!

  • Is this a guide to fix the flashing Red/Yellow light problem?

  • wtf kind of screw driver is that, i cant even open the fukin first screw. i nearly threw my ps3 at the wall.

  • my 40gb ps3 system is alot different than this =( the wire that connects the blu ray drive to the system is actually going UNDER the power supply. i'm very confused right now lol

  • @thesomeone48 mine was like this too the fan stays in the bottom of the black outer case in case you didnt figure it out

  • @sodahawk yeah i realized that, but ALOt of things are way too different. all i need to do is get to the heatsinks to clean the dust out, that's it. and i can't...

  • can u make a vid of putting it back together

  • Does the PS3 need a warranty sticker to be accepted even if I don't have a warrant on the system.

  • Would 750F work?

  • can you say me what is the difference between 60GB and 40GB ?

  • Hi, I was just wondering, what is the difference between the 40gb and the 80gb.

  • did i hear you say reballing diy???? that WILL be awesome mate

  • @bazamancity

    its on its way

just need another donnor unt lol

  • @gilksy1 u can have mine

  • u can have mine

  • Thankyou so much gilksy, absolutely top hole. Fixed, without you i'd be in shit street especially with black ops coming out soon. all the best.

  • hay d00d my 40gb is different it is the black psu kind and very strange. the bluray cord connects under the psu. also the fan is attached to the bottom of case not the mobo thing so it was a bit tricky but thanks for ur vids it made me have confidince to try such insane things.

  • @sodahawk Mine too.

  • really gotta say that this is a really well made video!! its the best guide i've come across online.. so thanks gilsky!!

...just wish it worked with me. i've "fixed" my 40gb PS3 three times now and each time its worked successfully until i've played games on it (worked perfectly for playing movies, music, etc.). But after about half an hour of playing a game (on a disk or from the hdd) its broken again. Any genius out there know whats going on?! any help would be much appreciated!!

  • Do i have to take the fan assemlby apart ?

  • @Fenrirmolf You will if you want to clean the thermal compound off, it makes it a lot easier.
