It explains in scientifically accurate yet jargon-free language some of the ideology that lies behind looking at issues of societal relevance (such as the role of government) from the perspective of economic science. Feel free to do your homework and check it for accuracy--these men are some of the leading thinkers in the field right now.
Hi all. This will be my last post on this discussion thread. I've been trying to think of one good book that I could recommend to the readers of this discussion that might provide some good insight into the "opposing view," and that would be short and easy to read. I've considered many, and I think the one I would recommend would be "Common Sense Economics" by James Gwartney, Richard L. Stroup, and Dwight R. Lee.
I recommend "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" by John Perkins. It reveals a game that is "as old as Empire" but has taken on new & terrifying dimensions in an era of globalization. For many years he worked for an international consulting firm where his main job was to convince less developed countries to accept multibillion-dollar loans for infrastructure projects & ensure that most of this money ended up at Halliburton, Bechtel, KBR & other U.S. engineering & construction companies.
These aren't sinister plots. Make money is what they do! They merely put themselfes in position to do a job. They all ususally are not efective. But that is largely due to the beaurocracy that hires them.
The problem is the the bureaucracy that hires them is also profiting from the contracts (see Cheney and Halliburton and Bush and Carlyle, for just two examples). And, what's more, the book goes on the explain that when these LDCs (less developed countries) don't play along or are unable to pay back the loans, then there are "military coups" or other black ops that the PTB (powers that be) employ to then take control over these countries and their resources.

W's investments in/buyouts of his oil businesses were by CIA- & BCCI-connected firms & individuals.
And another thing JFK wanted to do was end the private Federal Reserve System. Wilson granted Congress's power in 1913 to create money to the Fed. They create money, then loan it back to the government charging interest. The government levies income taxes to pay the interest on the debt. It's interesting to note that the Federal Reserve act and the 16th amendment, which gave congress the power to collect income taxes, were both passed in 1913. The Constitution did not provide for a wage tax.

Perkins: In the early '70s we worked it out that the House of Saud would invest petrodollars in T-bills. Treasury would hire US companies to build Saudi Arabia---new cities & infrastructure. When economic hit men fail, CIA-sanctioned people foment a coup, or perform assassinations. In Iraq, they weren't able to get to Saddam.

We entered Iraq for all the reasons stated by the Bush administration, and to put a base in the middle east, protect or oils supply. and to fill the pockets of the elite. Howard Dean got a draft deferment back in the '60s due to a back condition, even though he was a regular snow-skier, and led a very active life. Just because you can ski doesn't mean you don't have a back condition. There are problems which can flare up unexpectedly, then go away. My brother got deferred because a lawnmower cut off a baby toe. He could still walk, run, etc. just fine but the military rejected him.

He managed to close most of the slaughterhouses and small elder care homes. During huge snowstroms some road DIDN'T get plowed putting lives at risk. He sign the Civil Union Bill "in a closet". Cutting taxes to increase revenue worked for JFK in the early 1960's because he closed loopholes that allowed the extremely rich to hide their money from the IRS. And he reduced them from 92% at the top end down to 75%. Reagan then dropped them to 30%, and would have ran massive deficits if he hadn't stolen from the Social Security Trust to fund his military buildup. Nope, they are in favor of cutting the tax breaks for the richest people in this country--a group to which they, themselves, belong. I am no threat to you--I am a friend, not a foe. We are in agreement re: big brother government. The fact is we have a deepening deficit mounting on the backs of all of us and the biggest reason for it is tax breaks at the top and corporate welfare, and wars that are being fought to benefit the corporate elite. The book is roughly 150 pages long and is very reader-friendly. It explains in scientifically accurate yet jargon-free language some of the ideology that lies behind looking at issues of societal relevance (such as the role of government) from the perspective of economic science. Feel free to do your homework and check it for accuracy--these men are some of the leading thinkers in the field right now.

I recommend "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" by John Perkins. It reveals a game that is "as old as Empire" but has taken on new & terrifying dimensions in an era of globalization. For many years he worked for an international consulting firm where his main job was to convince less developed countries to accept multibillion-dollar loans for infrastructure projects & ensure that most of this money ended up at Halliburton, Bechtel, KBR & other U.S. engineering & construction companies.

The problem is the the bureaucracy that hires them is also profiting from the contracts (see Cheney and Halliburton and Bush and Carlyle, for just two examples). And, what's more, the book goes on the explain that when these LDCs (less developed countries) don't play along or are unable to pay back the loans, then there are "military coups" or other black ops that the PTB (powers that be) employ to then take control over these countries and their resources.

Poppy also ran his own offshore oil-drilling business, Zapata. Poppy had CIA connections before the Bay of Pigs. Many sources suggest Zapata was a CIA front before he became CIA chief in 1976. And another thing JFK wanted to do was end the private Federal Reserve System. Wilson granted Congress's power in 1913 to create money to the Fed. They create money, then loan it back to the government charging interest. The government levies income taxes to pay the interest on the debt. It's interesting to note that the Federal Reserve act and the 16th amendment, which gave congress the power to collect income taxes, were both passed in 1913. The Constitution did not provide for a wage tax.

I'm a woman, so I couldn't serve. My brother got a deferment for his toe and the other was a C.O. Perkins: In the early '70s we worked it out that the House of Saud would invest petrodollars in T-bills. Treasury would hire US companies to build Saudi Arabia---new cities & infrastructure. The House of Saud would keep oil prices within acceptable limits & we agreed to keep them in power as long as they did, which is one reason we went to war with Iraq. When economic hit men fail, CIA-sanctioned people foment a coup, or perform assassinations. In Iraq, they weren't able to get to Saddam.

We're guilty to some degree, each of us, but we were taught by the corporations to be good little corporate consumers. People have also been trained to look for someone to lead them out of their mess. There is too much faith in the establishment. Pre-NAFTA, Wal-Mart had to vary its business model in such a way that it did not really have a competitive advantage. Post-NAFTA, Wal-Mart could continue using its basic business model, except that it had to adopt newer store formats.

Again, WalMart did not oppose NAFTA. They were in Mexico at least 3 years prior to NAFTA. They capitalized on it, and improved their position in both Mexico and Canada. Mexico and the U.S. economies have both suffered as a result. I wonder whether YouTube will now censor this remark as they apparently did with my others on WalMart.

Dean hates the way this country is under this regime and wants to restore our authority in the world--as financially and morally--which has been egregiously undermined under BushCo. Democrats aren't communists; they support free enterprise. As Bobby Kennedy Jr. says, there is a difference between "fair market capitalism" and "crony capitalism" a la BushCo. When government runs business that is called communism but when business runs government, it is called fascism.

Dean didn't allow me to become anything except more involved in politics (which is a very good thing). I knew the war was illegal before I knew anything about Howard Dean. The numbers in Iraq ARE a lie. The regime has grossly understated the total number of deaths on U.S. hands, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children, not to mention the ones who were put into the camps and then set free because it was found they had done nothing wrong and knew nothing.

A majority of the member-states of the United Nations decided on November 29, 1947 to partition Palestine into a Jewish AND an Arab state. Israel has been establishing illegal settlements, in order to claim all of the land, in the name of "Zionism" and that is the problems. By the way, it's widely known that Cheney is Vader.

The crime was allowing gov officals to comment on what goes on in the defense of this nation. YOu disagree with torture, well im not going to make my enemies arguement for him. The crime was allowing a foreign agency, AIPAC, to operate as a PAC & buy our politicians. We need public campaign financing. The U.S. signed on to the Geneva Conventions. Torture and other mistreatment of persons in custody are also prohibited in all circumstances, both peacetime & wartime, per the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights & the Convention against Torture, both of which the U.S. ratified. The standard definition of torture is in article 1 of the Convention.

I know, Dean is proud of himself for admitting he dodged the draft so he could go skiing. Like its no big deal . The media at large has ignored the fact that his only son has been arrested several times for things such as burglarizing UVM campusus and selling tests.

Howard Dean got a draft deferment back in the '60s due to a back condition, even though he was a regular snow-skier, and led a very active life. Just because you can ski doesn't mean you don't have a back condition. There are problems which can flare up unexpectedly, then go away. My brother got deferred because a lawnmower cut off a baby toe. He could still walk, run, etc. just fine but the military rejected him.

My dad had chronick back pain his whole life, but he managed along with millions of other to hide their injuries because their opinions meant less then the fact that their fellow americans are at war. Dean admitted exaggerating his conditon because he was a coward/selfish.

If Dean exaggerated his condition and the government accepted it without a medical opinion, then the government is at fault for the deferment, not Dean. Moreover, Dean's brother Charlie was captured & killed in Laos in 1974 apparently working there for the CIA. Dean wrote: "Charlie was classified as a POW-MIA, although we don't know why. It's a good thing he was, because it allowed the U.S. military to do all that they have done for our family over the last twenty-five years."

I haven't heard about Dean's son's problems, and am not familiar with the details, but who among us hasn't done something we are not terribly proud of when we were young? I did rebellious things too, and it had nothing to do with my parents--who were both great, moral people.

My problem is the absence of reporting. It is one sided. Kerry opposed has contradicted himself so many times and it goes unreported, same with Bill and Hillary. Im glad Bush is getting shit on in the media, Id like to kill him. But he is only a picture of the corruption in the world, not just in the USA. Americans are guilty of not knowing

Yes, so true. Democracy is not a spectator sport. If people want to save this country, they need to start informing themselves! Otherwise, they will get the government they deserve. Jefferson understood that the greatest danger to democracy is uninformed masses--that's why a representational republic was formed. But the founders also understood that a government unchecked/unanswerable to the people is tyranny.

The fact that the US military lost only 3300 troops is a testament to everyone involved, especially , of course the troops who over whelmingly support and vote for President Bush. That says more than anything about the facts not being spoken of by the mass media

I trust the thousands of pages of research and reporting that have been published on Cheney's manipulation of the intelligence, working through Douglas Feith and the so-called now-disbanded "Office of Special Plans", which incidentally not only stovepiped intel but also passed through our "state secrets" to Israel via Larry Franklin and AIPAC.
