  • i just found my cigarettes.. they were in another dimension

  • Ummm, actually negativland DID want the song to be heard; they simply didn't have the scratch to hire the lawyers to defend against the copyright claims (neither would their label, as chronicled in their book "Fair Use: The Letter U and the Number 2").

  • @igowaznik1 Island sued SST and SST sued THEM. It wasent just a matter of "not having the scratch". I read the book well over ten years ago and was being sarcastic in the description...a sarcastic joke. I mistakenly assumed most people would know that, since why would a group of people make a song THEY dont want you to hear? But there you have it.....amazing.

  • I got to hear this one time late at night on a local station in SF mid nineties before the lawsuit. Thanks for digging this up.

  • Woof!

  • "Now godammit I want a concerted effort..."

OK Casey, and who the fuck are you supposed to be, Arthur Fucking Fiedler?

  • damn it if we can't come out of a slow record, I don't understand it

  • he was a little dog named snuggles

  • Curious to know if the Casey Kasem Nazi association is at all inspired by the residents third reich and roll

  • 4:54!!!! LOL PRICELESS!!!

  • go die the lot of ya for liking this

  • Negativland wasn't very smart about this. They titled the single, "U2 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." And you can't do that. The End. Now I'm going to create a new video site and call it Youtube, and let's see what happens.

  • @BaronM way to miss the point. they were hardly trying to fly under the radar.

  • @BaronM That wasent what they named it. But whatever. The cover of the record said U2 very large, and negativland very small at the bottom. So you dont know what you are talking about. Which means the website you are going to create will be a GREAT place for you to hang out because if its like the youtube that already exists, you will be surrounded by people just like yerself who talk about things they dont know about.

  • @blastincaps is from England and who gives a shit?

  • Crap it's actually at 4:07.

For the record, the little dog is called "Snuckles."

  • I like the CBers yelling at each other over the radio in the background.

    The sample 4:09 is hilarious!

  • @MrJohndoakes ham radio, actually (shortwave)

  • This is sheer genius! A ridiculously pompous song by a ridiculously self-important (ponderous, man!) Irish band, as rendered by a kazoo khorus.

The king of Top-40 pop muzak (wussy music, as we rockers called it back in the day) caught behind the scenes, showing his true not-ready-for-teenage-radio-ears self.

Absurdity upon absurdity upon goofiness. Sheer, anarchic genius. (And I love U2, but I agree with Kasey. I still don't give a shit what their names are.) This cracks me up, big time.

  • "These guys are from England" LOL

  • Here's the thing though and it has to be said, if some unknown band got one of their song sampled by i dont know fucking Kanye West and the resulting tune made with it would make shitloads of cash, and the band wouldnt get to make any of that cash and they were suing, we'd ALL be screaming rape and siding with them. And don't you even deny it. So really the issue is that millionaire rock stars sued little known not so rich artists for using their song. It's not about freedom, fair use or art.

  • @Novacoma actually, it's about all of those. the issue you identify is definitely part of it, and why should it not be? but it's hugely reductivist to say it's "just" that. also, the situation you describe where lesser- or unknown bands get their songs sampled by bigger artists who make shitloads of cash? that happens ALL THE TIME. Clyde Stubblefield never saw any royalties from anyone who sampled him on "Funky Drummer", one of history's most famous loops. and no-one bats an eyelid rly.

  • @Novacoma it's about parody, which is fair use.

  • For anyone with bad memories, US (Island recs) sued Negativland, at the time U2 themselves were doing the ZOO-tour, which was partly made up from illegally showing tv-signals from satellite to the audience.

    Hmmmmm........

  • Oh man, the U2 concert messed up traffic near Oakland so bad... huh. U2? OAKLAND? There was only one choice of song to blast as soon as I finally made it home!

  • To be fair... it is pretty hard for a dude transition from an uptempo record to a dog dying dedication :/

  • Negativland WANTED you to hear this, I promise.

  • This is the most sued over song ever. U2, American Top Forty, Casey Kasem, their labels and agents, producers, even some of the CB pulls, wanted their heads and or money. I heard they wrote a book about it but I've never actually seen it. That being said, easily one of my top 20 musical things ever; maybe top 10 if I think about it.

  • @dasprin37 The book makes interesting reading. Then again, some people might be more shocked to read 'Hit Men' (not by Negativland, though recommended by them) about the dealings in the record industry. The book title is very aptly chosen indeed.

  • @dasprin37 Posted a comment a few minutes ago about the book. Try Barnes&Noble.

  • U2 did not want to sue negativland, thier record label did. In fact they took out a full page ad in rolling stone for negativland when they learned about it

  • Isn't this Long Distance Dedication?

  • I managed to pick up a copy of this single relatively cheaply a few years back. They can still go for crazy prices on ebay from time to time. It was one of the first Negativland songs I heard, and since then I've been hooked. Love listening to Over the Edge, and pretty much anything that includes the Weatherman.

  • This is I Still Haven't Found What Im Looking For

  • @MrDzemolada yes

    beark

  • I just love to picture Shaggy in my head when Casey goes into his hilariously vulgar rants. Especially at 4:53 to 5:11. That's gold, right there! And poor little Snuggles. HAHAHA!!! What would Ol' Scoob say? RUCK RU,RAGGY!!!

  • And Negativland does want you to hear it.It's the greedy U2 bands label and Casey that wanted it destroyed.

  • I paid $20 for this CD single with two songs on it in 1996. Nobody could understand why.

    Thanks for posting it!

  • @KickSnareNichtsMehr haha..i remember when i paid through my nose for escape from noise and all my friends were like what the fuck are you doing and soon they were diggin it to.

  • @KickSnareNichtsMehr I paid 12 bucks for mine. Months later, I was in the same store that I bought it from and there was a customer asking for it. The owner said, I had that here but I think I sold it. I turned to the owner and said, yeah, that was me. He offered to buy it back for 20 bucks. Of course I said no way. Hang on to that copy. It's a rare one

  • @KickSnareNichtsMehr

But now you own a piece of history, so NER to those who would laugh at you.

  • all this aggression(below) on websites everywhere is so wrong the complete opposite of what this kind of social commentary music points to,try to be nice not single minded please

  • @ThePaulipager That makes ZERO sense. I dont know if you noticed but negativland ATTACKED harshly everything in this credit card society. You make them sound like they were flower power hippy love children or some dumb shit. Do you even know what these guys stood for? have you ever even listened to them? You are so off base i had to reread your comment to make sure you werent being sarcastic..i dont think you were. Maybe i am wrong..are you serious? hahaha

  • This is so bad even my 8ty old son could do better. I doubt U2 would be that bothered about it as its so bad.

  • @smurfu2 Who gives a shit?

  • @ConWalsh Most of the people on here DUH.

  • @smurfu2 @smurfu2 Your stupid kid could not in fact cut and splice back together tape so as to loop it. Your kid, nor you have the creativity that it took to do what these guys were doing back when you couldnt just digitally record and loop something. You have to understand, these dudes were doing by hand what you can do now with the click of a mouse. THEY INVENTED IT! So really man, you have no idea what you are talking about. Which i am sure is nothing new in your life.

  • @blastingcaps Hey baw bags say that to my face ya cunt dont you ever mention my kids ok dick head. Telling you dont start ya cunt.

  • @smurfu2 Fuck you and your little retard kids. How about that motherfucker? YOU started it fuck face. YOU came on MY page talking about YOUR stupid fuckin kid. SO save your tough guy shit cause i unlike most people on the internerd, i actually CAN fuckin fight. So, YOU dont start, ya retarded pussy. Sittin behind yer computer issuing threats like they mean something. I destroy people like you in bars and on the street on a monthly to weekly basis. I used to bounce chumps like you for a living.

  • @smurfu2 you are the 1 fucking talking about your half retarded kids. dont bring your fucking kids into the discussion and no1 would bring up the lil shitheads. go cry some more

  • @nexivdr Right on nexivdr!

  • @blastingcaps I saw Negativland live. They use cart machines to make their loops. They had to construct them by hand and assemble the carts. The idea was to push the button on the cart machine to play the loop when needed. The cart would play the sound and stop. They would need to keep pushing the button as many times necessary. They are an awesome act to watch.

  • Just throwing this out there. U2 didn't sue Negativland, their label did. HUGE difference there. U2 were actually completely fine with it as I recall.

  • @SoshoKittycat U2 WANTED their label to sue them. There is a video of mark hosler speaking at Yale not to long ago and U2's Manager is in attendance and it is made clear that they (U2) wanted to prevent Negativland from putting that record out. What made it worse was that U2 did everything they could to hide behind the skirt of island records so as not to appear to be bad guys. U2 was definitely NOT "fine" with it. So you are mistaken. according to negativland anyway.

  • @blastingcaps did you even watch the mark hosler video? it's not u2's manager in the audience, but r.e.m.'s manager. he's the one that mark, rightly, accuses of purchasing the single and bringing it to the attention of u2's management.

  • @blastingcaps

You dont even know who the hell U2's manager is apparently. That's NOT HIM!

And no, the band didn't want to sue them. Island did.

  • It seems there are different versions of the story going around. I saw Mark Hosler speak at a conference at Portland State University in 1998 and he said that after they had been sued and were totally destitute, that he got a call from Bono, who wound up sending him 30,000 USD in the mail. Also, he said that prior, the Edge was on a radio show, talking about sampling and they brought Hosler on - basically he'd been set up, but he said the Edge was pretty cool about it and supportive of N-land.

  • @blastingcaps Are you sure about that? I know there's video of Mark at Duke, and he talks to REM's manager, who's the one who called in on it...but maybe there's one of him at Yale with U2's manager? o.O That would be nuts...got a link? I wanna see it!

  • Lmao

  • negativland has more imagination in their little finger than bozo has in his entire large intestine. including the colon!

  • music made by people who use samples sucks? You must be jokeing. The digital manipulation of sounds is where the new music IS. It is being done in bedrooms by artists whose motive is not profit or even pussy. They give their music away for free.

The "record industry" is dead. The mutants creeps and musclemen are shaking like a leaf

It blows a hole in the radio

when it hasn't sounded good all week...

    A mike and boom

    in your living room...

Hittsville UK by the Clash 1980

  • @trashbin222 Totally. I saw Mark Hosler speak at some anti-corporate conference at Portland State University in 1998 and he said that after they had been sued and were totally destitute that he actually got a call from Bono. Bono asked him how much money they were out and wrote him out a check for double that (which was 30,000 USD) and sent it to him in the mail.

  • @sex6cult9revolution That's interesting about Bono and the guy from Negtivland. Negitivland were pioneers,

and I have enjoyed their work. They are discussed in the important film The Remix Manifesto...

  • This is badly labeled it's not "U2's lost song NEGATIVLAND" U2 had nothing to do with this song besides writing the original riff that Negativland lifted and midi'd. It's proper label should be "Negativland - Edit Radio" you could mention "original melody by U2" but it would be weird since it's not labeled that way on the album and few remix songs mention the original song in their title.

  • @chronicleone *whistles* wow, nothing gets past you huh man...i am thoroughly impressed. Are you serious? this isnt a U2 song? i could have sworn that it was on the joshua twig. Wasent it?

  • @blastingcaps the historical significance of Negativland's sampling of U2 and the subsequent legal battles that followed deserve far more than annoying sarcasm. This song is mislabeled.

  • @elispectorwhatag The whole point of the record as it was released, is that it looks like a record by U2 called Negativland - this was the basis of the subsequent court case. Read the Negativland book 'The Letter U and the Numeral 2' for the full story. The humour of blastingcaps's label has gone right over your head, obviously.

  • @elispectorwhatag Hey, since you have your head up your ass, why dont you look for your sense of humor. Ya fuckin twat. Its people like you who are too stupid to understand artists who caused all the trouble that negativland went through putting this record out in the first place. You really have nothing to add to this discussion so why dont you just stay the fuck off this page. Note the period, i am TELLING you to stay off the page.

  • @blastingcaps

chill out bono. and I think you mean the joshua tree

Joshua twigg is a fallen soldier from indiana. if you're from indiana this explains everything.

Check your facts because as far as I know it's by negativland and the song is u2.

You're less than average at basically anything is my new assumption.

  • @lkbroha joke -noun ... 2. something that is amusing or ridiculous, esp. because of being ludicrously inadequate or a sham; a thing, situation, or person laughed at rather than taken seriously; farce

  • @lkbroha I was going to insult you, but you have done such a fine job of proving how dense you are, that its not even necessary. Good work skeeter.

  • @chronicleone lolz you're smart.

  • @chronicleone who gives a shit about the melody anyhow.. it's fucking music!! U2 sued negativland over this shit.. fuck U2, may they rot in hell. seriously.. I'm sick of whiny shitbag "artists" crying because somoene "stole their song" it's art fuckfaces!!

  • @NinJavaisDotAnoobLOL

It's art alright, just bad art. If it had never come into existence we'd all been the better for it. I'm not siding with U2 BTW, they also make a lot of bad art. The suit was good publicity for negativland anyway. They sure milked it for all it was worth, to a pathetic level even. That whole little stunt interviewing the edge, come on. So negativland made sampling happen. Great, cause sampling music to make something worse with it hasnt gotten out of fucking hand....

  • @Novacoma you have no soul

  • btw i don't know what you by "milked it for all it's worth". It fucked with their distributors and ruined them financially. they have the right to make all the bad art they want. this song is better than the original shit that u2 put out, and they purposefully made it to be "bad art". you have no sense of humor and no soul. Please tell me why the suit was a good thing.. and don't give me that "bad art" shit. they knew exactly what they were doing when they made this piece of shit.

  • The title of this video is full of win.

  • Think the only thing funnier than the song and the bs the label pulled trying to shut it down, are the 28ish people that voted thumbs down. hahahaha

  • Why is this SOOOOOO damn funny? I can't stop laughing!

  • If I ever end up meeting Bono I'll ask him to sign my Negativland t-shirt!

  • Casey Kasem sounds like the Tourette's Guy in this!

  • man i could make a nice little comp

i happen to have bootleg live stuff with the U2 sample

  • and u2 didnt want you to hear

  • My god. NEGATIVland indeed. It just makes you want to curse

  • I have climbed highest mountains

I have run through the fields

    Only to be with you

    Only to be with you

    I have run

    I have crawled

I have scaled these city walls

    These city walls

    Only to be with you

  • I will put Bono into Bob Dobbs' pipe and usher in the millennium.

  • Snuggles... holy shit.

  • i'd nearly forgotten about Snuggles, then CK goes and reminds me of that shite....

  • negativland is from san francisco . FUCK FRANK ZAPPA! i wouldn't give a nickel for all his shit...of course it's technically magnificent, I'm sure his music is alot better than IT SOUNDS. maaybe you have to be a musician to understand it. SORRY HATERS, but digital sampling has liberated music from the "musicians". i know u worked hard to learn your instrument....too bad. WELCOME TO THE FUTURE! you don't have to pay yer dues anymore.....

  • @anothercountyheard

    @ alansmz

    you're both idiots.

the orig. of this song (the one you can't hear 'cause it's illegal)is PURE GENIUS, unlike this disco version (still funny) (CK is outta control!).

also: Frank Zappa was a genius.

    two completely different things.

so quit throwin' rocks and shut up. :-)

  • The whole Negativeland versus FZ thing is a false dichotomy. FZ made music that was technicallly magnificent but he also was a magnificent technician. He was a studio whiz and a master splicer. He always embraced new technolgies especially digital recording technology. To here something very Negativeland like, listen to the track "Porn Wars" on the Meets Mother of Prevention album. You'll also here some great music made with guitars and stuff on the same album. There's plenty of room for both.

  • @anothercountyheard I bet your shit sucks, fool.

  • @anothercountyheard Except the music made by people who rely on samples SUCKS, so who gives a flying fuck? :))

  • negativland is from san francisco

  • U2, especially Boner, needs a sense of humor.

  • @devtrev

Obviously this guy have more sense of humor than a loser like u.

BTW, Nega-thief-land is just PURE SHIT. No talent whatsoever...(if u can consider slagging other more successful & obviously more hardworking band as TALENT lol)....

Who give Nega-thief-land a shit hahahahaha.....

  • Comment removed

  • Fuck U2 hahahaha

  • fuck bono

  • @galletacaca

    Fuck u & Nega-Thief-land

  • Fuck Snuggles.

  • This mix is easily the best single of 1991. I know they say the hype made Negativland legendary. I remember Negativland assuming the status of legendary as soon as "Escape from Noise" hit the shelves in 1987! The public might never understand what a great satire this is.

  • @SweetSweetWaldo

Really? Is it better than "Teen Spirit?"

Jeez! Talk about hype that is actually bullshit.

  • "The song casey kasem, SST records, and negativland didnt want you to hear."

No. Negativland and SST wanted you to hear it. It was Island Records and Casey Kasem who wanted to squelch it.

  • I wish there were more Negativland on youtube, I want to explore them more.

  • @AwesomPossumReviews

Nega-thief-rat are just some lazy sonofabitch whose only talent is slagging hardworking people....

Obviously uploading whatever shit they have in their asses is too much of a chore for this 90's most talentless & lazy band of them all......

Why don't u go look up the work Frank Zappa. He's the most hardworking & most talented musician EVER!!

  • @alansmz see posted comment!

  • @alansmz Please do your homework, read up on them before you say something like that. If you like Zappa you're almost sure to like Negativland. I remember Zappa was very strong about freedom of speech, spent many a day in court defending it. It's one of the main theme's throughout Negativland's 30 years too.

Also, they made (or still make) Over The Edge, a long-running weekly pogramme, that took an incredible amount of time and work to make. What do you mean, lazy.

  • @lutek1 sue me if you want, but zappa's music doesn't really thrill me. that said, he's one of my heroes. in part because of his amazing musicianship and ability to run a band, and in large part because of his beliefs and politics and how he always stuck to his guns. never backed down, always calm, thoughtful, intelligent.

zappa and negativland definitely share some similarities. not much of that is musical except that they're both virtuosos of their chosen instruments.

  • ponderous

  • I can never watch SCOOBY DOO again lol!

    What year is this from?

It would have made a great intro for U2'S ZOO TV TOUR!

  • Negativland for Glastonbury!

  • Negativland is the act, U2 is the song title, not the other way around.

  • Are these guys SUBGENIUSES? This looks like the product of subgenii brainwaves, if so then PRAISE "BOB" and may the SLACK be with you.

  • i still feel that way about u2--who gives a shit!

  • You're right. But as far as their label goes, U2 was in power to not continue with any lawsuits. So, we could easily take the blame from them, but the honest truth is that you are what you record and you are what your label does when you don't have the contract right. But yeah, I would have sued Kasey for that too. Of course, he's an Arab that thinks he's white. Heh.

  • Negativland got sued for this. How altruistic of a band and group of folks who saw so much oppression and tries to save the world through Starbucks and the Gap! Jive ass U2. Props to "No other possibility!"

  • @LotusOutlaw, I believe it was their publishing company, rather than the band themselves. I suspect that the guys in U2 would have rather sued Kasey for saying "These Guys are From England."

  • @LotusOutlaw U2 didn't sue them. Island Records sued them.

  • @Applemask my mistake. however, U2 could have done something about it, unless the conditions of their contract were to keep their mouths shut.

  • one of the many reasons i loathe U2...

  • @feralpriest Good comment!!

  • he was a little dog named snuggles, lets remember him

  • These guys are from england and who gives a shit. hahahaha big ups

  • @lemoneater88 The fuckers are Irish I thought

  • CAUTION: DO NOT SAVE THIS BUMPER STICKER

However: Before using please note the large, attractive "N" that is formed when combined with the outer packaging.

:-) actually got this one! was in the shops for no more than a day.

  • @lutek1 I found a copy at a used record store and my friend started blabbing about how much it was worth and how rare it was. Suddenly the shop owner decided it wasn't for sale anymore. Thanks, buddy!

  • @cxpage

    OMG !!! *facepalm*

  • play the record, okay?

    please!

  • Find some statues and let's deface, I want to beat up on Kasey Kassem.

  • Thanks. Been wanting to hear this for ... decades. he he he.

  • I remember getting Negativland's 1st LP at UVM's college radio station in 1980. Although it hasn't aged as well as their other work, it was a sonic breakthrough that got played endlessly over the air even though most of our listeners were like wtf?

  • I remember when negitiveland used to host Over The Edge recorded every show! LOL!

  • I remember when Live 105 played this. So sweet. I was laughing my ass off. Ah those were the days.

  • Casey Kasem is a lulzkiller

  • over. the. edge.

  • mm so glad i called in to kpfa an\d kfsr in my teenaged days .. yes black dahlia we put roachs on our anuses .. lol hahahaha

i loved call in radio. i think my voice exists somewhere on negativlands call in radio shows, i loved that shit.

  • This is so great...it may be the most significant work I've ever heard

  • That's right. Most musicologists consider this the most important piece of recorded music since sound recording was invented. NASA is also working on a plan to "chase down" Voyager and replace the current golden record aboard it with an endless tape loop of this.

  • Awesome!

  • Negativland was not a voluntary party in the banning of this song. Casey's lawsuit against the band and SST records resulted in the record company having to recall all copies back to be destroyed.

  • Like everyone's going to send them back lol

  • LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • Do you know how many timezones?

  • 11. It's not evenf unny.

  • @sonicdeath10 time zones? 11 its a whole half size of the world

  • U2 sum up everything wrong with music. Twunts.

  • Why? Cuz they have broad appeal? They write some good songs, but it's all opinion anyways.

I think the pop tarts with autotune are ruining it faster.

  • "this is bullshit" LOL

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • Pink Floyd wrote "Arnold Layne".

  • Comment removed

  • pink who?

  • Diddly shit!

  • Snuggles

  • Every time they have him say "snuggles" I laugh out loud. Can't help it.

  • These guys are from England and who gives a shit!

  • That line still makes me laugh after all these years.

  • @blastingcaps

your name is blastingcaps and who gives a shit?!

  • @blastingcaps *Snuggles*

  • @ehrichweiss Yes that's right, and the Bloody Sunday massacre when British soldiers opened fire on civilians occurred somewhere near Charing Cross Railway Station

  • Who gives a shit!!!

    Absolutely brilliant!

  • I saw them live in Seattle around 2000.

It was a very interesting show, with all kinds of performance art, and homemade electronic instruments on stage.

  • I think they did a mix of "The Sound of Music" and a ZZ Top song at that show.

  • Well when you go to their site They became like U2.Animals in a zoo!! Only showmen.Preachers of paganism and rites!

  • snuggles,

    you little shit!

  • SONIC OUTLAWS.....Watch it!!!

  • oh man, that was good!

  • I just found Escape From Noise at a used CD store....great intro to this interesting.....group? Art project? Either way, very intriguing.

"That sound is more important than you"

  • That sound is more important than your entire life!

  • For centuries sound was used as a method of torture.

Put someone's head inside a bell....and ring it....eventually....they'll go insane..
