The major issue here is what Buchanan defines as "built America." Did Chinese build the (western) railroads (the Irish built the east)? Did blacks pick cotten/build the white house? Physically, yes - the Chinese/blacks put hammer to nail. However, the intellectual "building" of America came from whites. Whites designed the White House, whites designed the railroads. Who gets credit for "building" America? I say both. Pat says the intellectual side built America. Not accurate but not "racist."

However, Maddow specifically used the White House as an example of black labor; those people you list all lived much later than the White House was built. I understand your point though; I still think that Buchanan is thinking on a different wavelength than Maddow - whites wrote the Constitution, for example. It's more of a structural "building" than specific (labor). I don't agree with him 100% - but I don't think he hates all non-whites.

He is trying to make the point that justice Sotomayor would not have made it to the supreme court if it weren't affirmative action. One could argue that white males were the only ones that contributed to building the foundation of America when everyone else was excluded including white women, but of course that is not the case.
