So glad you pointed that stuff out about marriage. I hate when people say, 'Oh marriage is just a government thing, just a piece of paper.' In one sense yes, but that 'thing' and paper effect a lot. I think about the hospital stuff a lot; I would die if I couldn't be with my partner if something were wrong.

I've heard of many horror stories surrounding gay marraige rights denied longtime couples that fall along the lines of the story you shared. One guy was made homeless when his partner died. His partner's family came into his house of many years and tossed all of his belongings & locked him out. He had no legal recourse because the law only thought of him as a roommate, not as a spouse. Supposedly there are 1100 marraige rights being denied gays through this prejudism built into our government.

That's the number one reason I point out the need for equal marriage rights to people I know. When currently so many straight people treat marriage like a knickknack to keep on their shelves (ie. Britney Spears), who's to say that a lesbian or gay couple who's been together for 30 years shouldn't have the right to be at their partners death bed.
