The new Dumbledore's hat is awful, yeah, but the acting did not help. The new Dumbledore does not look immediately likeable like the first one, his voice never serene, his stance never imposing or elegant enough like the real Dumbledore should be like.
They are two different actors. They are two different people. That means they interpret the character in different ways. I don't think you should compare them. Personally I can't. I can't see Michael Gambon in the first two. And I can't see Richard Harris in the Half Blood Prince. Or any of the others. Sorry, Also the costumes are completely different.
Costume? Lol? I still think the problem was with the acting. He was so much more agressive, it's just different. Saying that the problem is from the costume is just ... you know what, ridiculous.
@laxgod01 No I'm telling you that the character was 115. I've no idea how old Richard Harris was when he died but I'm sure he was younger than 115 and anyway he died in 2002 so I obviously wasn't talking about him
I really liked Richard Harris as Dumbledore when the movies first came out. He gave off that loving yet wise attitude better, which fit the early books since that's all we knew of Dumbledore. Michael Gambons is what I see now when I picture Dumbledore and it fits the later books where he became more "human" with faults and imperfections. Just my opinion.
Richard harris was perfect for the first two movies imo. Everything was more lighter, happier and everyone was younger, so the typical old, wise wizard like richard worked. I could never imagine him playing the other films though, because we would have seen a dramatic change in his personality.
@spartanses Exactly what I think too. SS and CoS was there to kind of introduce this whole world of magic. Even though Voldemort was present, he still didn't pose a very major threat. As Harry was young and naive, Harris worked as a nicer, more "magical" and mysterious Dumbledore. From the third film and onwards, everything became a whole lot darker, which required a change in personality from everyone, and Dumbledore needed to step up and show his true powers, which Gambon does perfectly imo ):
Gambon is definitely the better actor. And I actually liked him (as Dumbledore) better than I did Richard Harris.
I loved how Michael added that sort of quirkieness to Albus. That hidden sense of humor that made you wonder : How can a person who's done so many bad things in their life be so calm and down to earth? Which made him a mysterious character. And I believe that was the point.
I really really got attached to Michael's Albus. I still can't stand his death.
Michael Gambon is a great actor, and does a great job in the HP movies but my idea of Dumbledore from the books will always be what Richard Harris made the character appear as, gentle, kind, fair, wise, but also a strong sense of justice.
RIP Richard Harris, thank you for embodying one of my favorite childhood book characters so well!

I think both Dumbeldores rule :D They're both cute in that grandpa-ish way, and funny, both great actors. They can both portray Dumbeldore's witty personality, yet he is also smart and serious at the same time. only good actors can take that on :)
Richard Harris filled the expectations of most people... calm, gental and very wize... hell even his cloths seem to have matched him more... the second dumbaldore doesnt seem to have much color at all. he looks more like a street bum in those ugly gray robes. but still he does a good job playing his roll. Being gay is no problem but I wondering about her thought process as it had nothing to do with the story. Anyone?
Finally a legend that doesn't have to have a wife or woman next to him. They gave Santa Claus a Mrs. Claus, Superman and Superwomen, and some fools even want to give God a wife written about in the Di Vinci Code. Stop!! this stupid maddness. For pete's sake why make Dumbledore a tragic figure in the end by making him a homosexual cuz he doesn't have a damn woman next to him. He a $%$#*&^ legend for God sakes. I like Harris as the grandfatherly wizard, but no way in hell could he have ever pulled off badass Dumbledore. Gambon is amazing at that, even if he doesn't do soft and sweet as well. The only one who could have done both sides very well would have been Ian McKellen, but I don't think he wanted to be type cast by essentially playing Gandolf eight more times.

I think it would be better if dumbledore would not die in harry potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I think it would be best if harry would be killed by voldemord in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and then after a great battle dumbledore defeated voldemord and killed him... But unfortunately, it ends differently
@hoschniroschni Harry deserved to kill Voldemort. After all he went through because of V and all the effort that went into protecting him it would be a slap in the face to have him killed off. Come on. The hero dies without defeating the villain. What a shitty way that would end the story. Though I agree. Dumbledore planning his own death with Snape was pointless.

Shame he wasn't clever enough to bother to read the books then, if he had his performance might have been a bit better. You only have to watch goblet of fire to see how unspeakably dreadful Gambon is as Dumbledore, completely out of character. So much more wrong with his performance than just bad costumes.
yer put most of the actors never read the books daniel emma and rupert read them all they said they called each other at night to say did they belive what there doing next . the actor for lupin only read the 1st book while sirius only read half off the book . so really it was just the 3 who read them all. so dont go saying he was bad course he never read them blame the director
The problem with Gambon's dumbledore certainly wasn't the actor, it was the costume department. His appearance is what puts people off. If they gave him a white elegant beard, colouful robes and ditched that stupid hat, then his perfomance would have seemed so much better , like it was in HBP. Please don't bash Gambon as he is a sweet, funny and clever old actor who doesn't deserve such criticism. Bash the costume designers, they screwed up.
@Crichjo32 Gambon makes mistakes as well unfortunately. He admits he's never read the Harry Potter books, and says that he doesn't deliberately. Gambon's Dumbledore is abrupt, impatient and even angry, which wrecked the perfect calm persona image that Dumbledore should have and that Richard Harris played so well. If he read the books, maybe he's understand.
I agree on the costuming, scruffy grey rags and horrible hat, never seems to wear the half moon spectacles either.

Its good Dumbledore dying the Story Fits.. Richard Harris I have to admit met my mental image of Dumbledore, but Michael Gambon i think is the better actor. By the way Albus Dumbledore is not gay, it is probally Michael Gambon.
When I saw the sixth film, I didn't really feel anything when Dumbledore died. I'm positive that if Richard Harris had lived long enough to do the sixth film, I'd have probably felt something during the death, and I'd probably almost cry during the potion scene.
I wish he hadn't died. Not that I think Michael Gambon isn't doing a good job so far, but Harris fit my mental image of Dumbledore WAY better than Gambon does.
@CharlieBladeRemus Totally, totally agree. He was much more gentle and kind and old manly, yet wise and had an air of immense power about him at the same time. Whenever I read the books, even the one past COS, I still imagine Harris :)

Gambon's Dumbledore is abrupt, impatient and even angry, which wrecked the perfect calm persona image that Dumbledore should have and that Richard Harris played so well. If he read the books, maybe he's understand.
I agree on the costuming, scruffy grey rags and horrible hat, never seems to wear the half moon spectacles either.

Its good Dumbledore dying the Story Fits.. Richard Harris I have to admit met my mental image of Dumbledore, but Michael Gambon i think is the better actor. By the way Albus Dumbledore is not gay, it is probally Michael Gambon.

When I saw the sixth film, I didn't really feel anything when Dumbledore died. I'm positive that if Richard Harris had lived long enough to do the sixth film, I'd have probably felt something during the death, and I'd probably almost cry during the potion scene.

I wish he hadn't died. Not that I think Michael Gambon isn't doing a good job so far, but Harris fit my mental image of Dumbledore WAY better than Gambon does.

@CharlieBladeRemus Totally, totally agree. He was much more gentle and kind and old manly, yet wise and had an air of immense power about him at the same time. Whenever I read the books, even the one past COS, I still imagine Harris :)

@CharlieBladeRemus Both Actors had what the character needed. Harris had the Grandfatherly loving side to him. And Gambon had the strong leading warrior personality. If only they could have found someone to portray both with his character.

The first dumbledore was wayy better more humble and more the way i imagined. I knwo iam being picky but the new dumbledore's beard isnt long enough and his robes arent colourful enough for the job.

i prefer the 1st dumbledore. the way he dressed, talked, moved and practically everything about him made him look all powerful and wise. but the current dumbledore, the way he talks, dresses(the clothes made him look shaggy) and everything about him makes him look like a joke(no offense). i couldnt take him seriously. and what's with the band around his beard? he looked more like a hippy than a powerful wizard...again, no offense

The first actor was more like the sweat and funny Dumbledore, but I cant imagine him having a battle with Voldemort in the 5th movie, or all the action in the 6th one, I like them bouth ;D
