I'm sure this was influenced by a restaurant I used to visit in Hertford in the 1970's called ' Christines '.It had several elderly waitresses that almost dropped the plates on the table by the time thay had got to you !The brilliant Julie Walters - how did they do this without laughing !.
Hilarious as ever. 'One...soup, ' [licks pencil] 'and...'[massive pause]'....another soup'. I remember VWASOT was shown at 9 on a Friday night, the only time I was allowed to stay up, and the original was not beeped on the beeb.
I love this sketch :) I love Victoria Qood and Julie Walters and I live everything that they do :) I'm from a younge generation and I love this and so do my grandparents so really anybody can. Love VW
I could have sworn there was more to this sketch at the end..... when they pay, she brings them back even more change than they had paid with, so the "punchline" is that is was worth the wait.... maybe I'm thinking of a similar sketch ?
She's just right for the old Lyons Corner house waitresses or those at the kardoma cafes in Manchester, I can certainly remember them working into old age. It's a fabulous sketch I love it.
I do find it hard to get why anyone could dislike this. The subtlety is brilliant - watch at 4.27 how JW levels the bowls just as DP looks up, so they are completely unaware that she has tipped the whole lot painfully slowly onto the floor. And "cream of.........no..........I can't remember the whole sentence!" It takes so much confidence to come up with an idea like this, believe it can work in such a fast-moving medium as tv and then hand it over to other people to act for you. 10 stars *
My family and I went for a meal to celebrate my mum's 60th birthday last night.. as a starter, two of us were having soup.. my auntie was ordering, but as soon as she said, "Two soups", she couldn't continue through laughing just at the thought of this sketch! ..(Needless to say, the rest of us followed suit!)
The waiter was much too young to understand what the hell was going on XD
Its so funny. When i was a teenager, my parents took me to Great Fosters in Egham and we were having dinner in the large barn dining room, and we were served by a waitress not unlike Julie Walters! All the slow moves were there, plus her senility.! It was a couple of years later that i saw this sketch, and i nearly died with laughter.......
She was based on the old "Lyons Corner House" Nippy! That's the ironic bit,as they were called Nippy in that they were supposed to be able to 'nip along' & serve diners quite quickly! Bit of useless info' there, lol.JW is ruddy hilarious in this,& it must've taken numerous 'takes' to get this right.I imagine DP & CI were in stitches throughout. It was in danger of being a tad too long, but it made me roar out loud & it still does! "Dinnerladies" follows next.Got the box set of that also.
This was based on an actual cafe/restraunt in Morecambe (Victoria Wood lived/grew up close to the town) where all the watrereses were rather elderly and slow service was the norm. Although I doubt they were quite this dotty.
This is one of the reasons why we have a retirement age when employees are entitled to draw a state pension. Although this will change with the ConDem government trying to raise the minimum retirement age to 70 and maybe even 75
It's like one of those fixed faces that old people have. If they smile too much when younger by the time they are old the smile is fixed permanently on their faces.
According to the cast this was the hardest of all the sketches to record as they couldn't stop laughing at Julie Walters. At one point Geoff Posner (VW's usual producer) had to yell down from the gallery that they must stop laughing at it was taking too long to record.
@mikeride101 Victoria Wood used to have "Victoria Wood Sketch Books" that were published after each series. I've got one of them - somewhere. Have a search on eBay or Google them ... they do exist.
@amysnobody101 They bleeped out the swear word, because when this was first shown in the mid 1980's fortunately programmes on before a certain time in the evening would not be allowed for viewers to hear swearing. Not like today unfortunately.
I think Julie Walters is absolutely wonderful, but I must say that this sketch is a bit too slow and repetitive for my liking. There were others that were much, much better. I loved her as Brenda's mother in 'Dinner Ladies'.
She is great. But the thing about this sketch is, after the first few moments, you just can't believe it is really happening. It's one of those sketches that make you laugh till you cry. And I've never forgotten it. As soon as I see the first couple of seconds, I'm off.
I don't think it's a question of 'right' or 'wrong'. People have different tastes (thank goodness!) I said 'for my liking'. It's just my personal opinion ;-))
Hilarious lol It's so realistic. There used to be decrepit old ladies like this waitressing in loads of restaurants / cafés up until about 15 years ago. It's mostly younger people now though.
Sorry about that. If you look at the other comments, you'll find how much others laughed at it. We probably just have different senses of humour - I might not enjoy what makes you laugh.
Yeah I know, everyone has a different sense of humour. I love other Victoria Wood sketches I've seen, just this one in particular didn't really do anything for me.
@karinjoc - Same here. I think Julie Walters is absolutely wonderful - as a comedienne, as an actress and as a person. But I don't think this was her best sketch.
'Fraid not. I only managed to get this by sheer fluke. I'd been looking for it on YT, without luck, then by chance saw it come up on an afternoon repeat on TV. Quickly whacked on the Sky+ thinking I'd missed the beginning, and it recorded the whole show!
