  • "Oooh! You must have been quite peckish!" ... lol!!!

    Classic comedy, Total Classic.

  • This has to be the funniest clip I have ever seen. I have watched it over and over and I still laugh.

  • Pure brilliant!

  • it is so funny at the end hehehehehe

  • Julie walters amazing actress

  • LOVE this sketch...it's so perfectly timed. Thanks for posting it.

  • I'm sure this was influenced by a restaurant I used to visit in Hertford in the 1970's called ' Christines '.It had several elderly waitresses that almost dropped the plates on the table by the time thay had got to you !The brilliant Julie Walters - how did they do this without laughing !.

  • pure comedy genius that is julie walters

  • Hilarious as ever. 'One...soup, ' [licks pencil] 'and...'[massive pause]'....another soup'. I remember VWASOT was shown at 9 on a Friday night, the only time I was allowed to stay up, and the original was not beeped on the beeb.

  • "No Tip? ... Bastards!"

    Classic :')

  • Omg I hate it when it cuts off words you post i'll correct them from my previous comment Victoria Wood And younger

  • I love this sketch :) I love Victoria Qood and Julie Walters and I live everything that they do :) I'm from a younge generation and I love this and so do my grandparents so really anybody can. Love VW

  • Doesn't ring a bell.

  • I could have sworn there was more to this sketch at the end..... when they pay, she brings them back even more change than they had paid with, so the "punchline" is that is was worth the wait.... maybe I'm thinking of a similar sketch ?

  • 1 soup + another

  • Celia Imrie is hot in this

  • No wonder the Weasleys are all so scrawny.

  • The two people ordering disliked this! :D

  • 2 people didnt get their soup

  • this was the most un funny thing ive ever watched

  • Julie Walters is sooo good at playing old people.

  • Celia Imerie!!!!! Wow.

  • Wonderful....

  • Molly Weasley :')

  • She's just right for the old Lyons Corner house waitresses or those at the kardoma cafes in Manchester, I can certainly remember them working into old age. It's a fabulous sketch I love it.

  • I do find it hard to get why anyone could dislike this. The subtlety is brilliant - watch at 4.27 how JW levels the bowls just as DP looks up, so they are completely unaware that she has tipped the whole lot painfully slowly onto the floor. And "cream of.........no..........I can't remember the whole sentence!" It takes so much confidence to come up with an idea like this, believe it can work in such a fast-moving medium as tv and then hand it over to other people to act for you. 10 stars *

  • My favourite actress she is so talented

  • My family and I went for a meal to celebrate my mum's 60th birthday last night.. as a starter, two of us were having soup.. my auntie was ordering, but as soon as she said, "Two soups", she couldn't continue through laughing just at the thought of this sketch! ..(Needless to say, the rest of us followed suit!)

The waiter was much too young to understand what the hell was going on XD

  • Its so funny. When i was a teenager, my parents took me to Great Fosters in Egham and we were having dinner in the large barn dining room, and we were served by a waitress not unlike Julie Walters! All the slow moves were there, plus her senility.! It was a couple of years later that i saw this sketch, and i nearly died with laughter.......

    So well observed Victoria.!

  • She was based on the old "Lyons Corner House" Nippy! That's the ironic bit,as they were called Nippy in that they were supposed to be able to 'nip along' & serve diners quite quickly! Bit of useless info' there, lol.JW is ruddy hilarious in this,& it must've taken numerous 'takes' to get this right.I imagine DP & CI were in stitches throughout. It was in danger of being a tad too long, but it made me roar out loud & it still does! "Dinnerladies" follows next.Got the box set of that also.

  • This was based on an actual cafe/restraunt in Morecambe (Victoria Wood lived/grew up close to the town) where all the watrereses were rather elderly and slow service was the norm. Although I doubt they were quite this dotty.

  • im 13 and i love watching this ahaha "oh you must of been quite peckish!"

  • comedy gold! more brand new brit sketch at thelivesexgirls. xx

  • Some sketches stay with you for years and years this is one of them. Brilliant.

  • I love this video it's soooooooooooooooooooo funny

  • Thank you for uploading this video, it's one of my favourites and I have'nt seen it for years, cheers.

  • this is so funny, Julie Walters is brilliant!

  • LMAO

  • A classic for all time

  • Genius!!

  • One of the best sketches ever LOL ;-)

  • lol

  • What did UK Gold do to incur your wrath? I'm glad they showed it so that I could post it. This is the first negative comment anyone has posted.

  • @valw53 I am french, and believe me, this is the BEST humour I 've ever seen ! ! Love it !! Can't help laughing ! ! Thanks for posting it !

Isabelle ANDREE on You tube also

  • Well done, UK Gold! Doing your very best there to screw up a great sketch.

  • I stayed in a place like this a few years ago in the Peak District.

    The waitress was called Gladys.

She was a lovely personality, but I was concerned for her health!

  • "Please tell the waitress, if you're related to Shirley Abicair" lol.. So Victoria Wood

  • I think the waitress character might be a step on from Mrs Overall.

  • This is one of the reasons why we have a retirement age when employees are entitled to draw a state pension. Although this will change with the ConDem government trying to raise the minimum retirement age to 70 and maybe even 75

  • Just being a bit paranoid but even so it's a big step to raise the retirement age for women from 60 to 67.

  • This really is the funniest comedy sketch of all time.

  • Brilliantly performed by all (however did they keep a straight face doing this?).

VW clains the waittress was based upon one she encountered in a Morecambe hotel. Thanks for posting.

  • I pee myself every single time

  • would love to see bloopers of this, I wonder how they managed to keep straight faces, Julie's walking back n forth is sublime, she is a treasure

  • The false teeth type grin is genius.

  • It's like one of those fixed faces that old people have. If they smile too much when younger by the time they are old the smile is fixed permanently on their faces.

  • That's Julie Walters?!!! She looks so different!

  • This and Acorn Antiques are THE BEST!

  • According to the cast this was the hardest of all the sketches to record as they couldn't stop laughing at Julie Walters. At one point Geoff Posner (VW's usual producer) had to yell down from the gallery that they must stop laughing at it was taking too long to record.

  • One of, if not the funniest sketches of all time :) Julie is a class act.

  • brilliant!!!

  • This sketch is so iconic. It's up there with Four Candles and The Dead Parrott.

  • Heyy....:) LOVE THIS SKETCH....

Does anyone happen to know where I can get the script from?? :) :)

  • @mikeride101 Sorry, no idea. Transcribe it yourself maybe?

  • @valw53 Yeah I was thinking thats what I would have to do!! :))

  • @mikeride101 Victoria Wood used to have "Victoria Wood Sketch Books" that were published after each series. I've got one of them - somewhere. Have a search on eBay or Google them ... they do exist.

  • @MikeyTTTT Great - Thank You!!!

    I shall have a look!!!! :D

  • lol ive been looking for this video for ages so funny

  • She would have never survived where I worked as a waitress :/

  • rofl

  • "Ready to order Sir......Madam?"

Classic as the soup finally doesn't arrive.

  • This clip still makes me laugh - Thanks for posting : )

  • Just brilliant !

  • so funny

  • y did they bleep out b*****d

  • I recorded it from a daytime repeat, I imagine that's why.

  • @amysnobody101 I know. UK Gold are prudes.

  • @amysnobody101 No loss.

  • @amysnobody101 They bleeped out the swear word, because when this was first shown in the mid 1980's fortunately programmes on before a certain time in the evening would not be allowed for viewers to hear swearing. Not like today unfortunately.

  • i've had this happen to me before lol!

  • Nothing else quite like this....

  • "my, you must have been quite peckish", magnificent.

  • Awesome

victoria wood is probably the best writer nowdays

Julie made me laugh as brens mom in Dinnerladies

    Comedy Gold!

  • I think Julie Walters is absolutely wonderful, but I must say that this sketch is a bit too slow and repetitive for my liking. There were others that were much, much better. I loved her as Brenda's mother in 'Dinner Ladies'.

(No insults, please, it's only my opinion ;-)))

  • She is great. But the thing about this sketch is, after the first few moments, you just can't believe it is really happening. It's one of those sketches that make you laugh till you cry. And I've never forgotten it. As soon as I see the first couple of seconds, I'm off.

  • @expatbritingermany wow you have no idea how wrong you are, this is the most genius sketch ever written..

  • I don't think it's a question of 'right' or 'wrong'. People have different tastes (thank goodness!) I said 'for my liking'. It's just my personal opinion ;-))

  • A prime example of British Comedy at its best -Pretty accurate example of British customer service too !!

  • this is the funniest ,Julie Walters is majorly brilliant in this......it excruciatingly funny xxx

  • wee myself each time i watch it! haha

  • I laugh at this sketch no matter how many times i see it XD

    Easily Julie Walters' best acting

  • Victoria Wood's writing + Julie Walters' acting = comedy gold.

    Enough said!

  • A classic!

  • Julie is utter genious !!

  • Julie Walters is brilliant BUT how do Duncan Preston and Celia Imerie keep straight faces????

  • I've always wondered that as well. I mean Julie is sooooo funny in this how can they not laugh.

  • They must have rehearsed it over and over again until they no longer found it funny.

  • @lemsip unlikely as it's still very funny now!

  • @transmissionends64 they dont

  • Loved it

Please tell the waitress if your in a hurry

    What no TIP B******S

  • lol "no tip? bastards!!"

  • why was everyone clapping from 4:24-4:26?? lol

  • Never never gets old .. a rare piece of pure comedy

  • DEAD= cant breath for laughing!LOL!

  • Hilarious lol It's so realistic. There used to be decrepit old ladies like this waitressing in loads of restaurants / cafés up until about 15 years ago. It's mostly younger people now though.

  • I didn't really find this very funny :S Just my opinion. Although the 'you must've been peckish' part made me chuckle.

  • Sorry about that. If you look at the other comments, you'll find how much others laughed at it. We probably just have different senses of humour - I might not enjoy what makes you laugh.

  • Yeah I know, everyone has a different sense of humour. I love other Victoria Wood sketches I've seen, just this one in particular didn't really do anything for me.

  • @karinjoc - Same here. I think Julie Walters is absolutely wonderful - as a comedienne, as an actress and as a person. But I don't think this was her best sketch.

  • Comment removed

  • A masterpiece !!!!!

  • Just sublime.

  • classic.thanks for posting.

  • Such a simple idea for a sketch -- only Julie Walters could pull this off! It gets me in stitches every time!

  • 'Fraid not. I only managed to get this by sheer fluke. I'd been looking for it on YT, without luck, then by chance saw it come up on an afternoon repeat on TV. Quickly whacked on the Sky+ thinking I'd missed the beginning, and it recorded the whole show!

  • Has anyone got the Beryl Reid waitress sketch where she drinks all the glasses dry a marvellous sketch.

  • No Tip ??? Basrards !!!

  • Does anyone remember a Victoria Wood sketch "is it on the trolley?" and if so, is it on YouTube anywhere? Please mail me if it is.

  • I must admit, it doesn't ring a bell. I don't know if anyonee's posted it on YT. Only after I'd posted this did I find someone had already put it on here. I was so lucky it was on TV JUST as I was watching, and got it recorded in time.

  • "Is it on the trolley? Can you point to it?"

I've been looking for that! One of my faves. Alas, no joy.

  • Yes it is now on You Tube

  • what is the name of the sketch ? I've been looking for it all over : )

  • how on earth did they keep a straight face during this, i was creased up

  • this is so cool ..thanks for sharing ..lmaoooooo..hug`s

  • very simple idea perfectly performed

    genius

  • Bless you for posting this, I can give the link to my mates to whom I keep saying "two soups?" and they don't frikking get it!!!

  • I was looking for it on YouTube and couldn't find it. Then it came on TV as I was watching. Sky+ did me the favour of recording the whole show, so I didn't even miss the beginning like I thought. Lucky!

  • I got to get me that Sky+ LOL

    cheersmedears!

  • I met Julie Walters earlier today at a book signing for her fab new autobiografy " Thats another story "

she also signed a few Acorn Antiques the musical dvd covers and leaflets for me to aswell!

    lovely lady !!!!!!!

  • Lucky you. I think she's great. I heard the book serialised on Radio 4 last week.

  • it is amazing that this sketch does not have 1000000 views. great script and delivery. i wonder what it would be like without the audience.

  • I've been in that cafe lol

  • luv this video its absolutley hiliarious luv it luv julie walters shes the best

  • totally priceless nover fails to make me cry with laughter

  • along with the shoe shop..one of the funniest sketches ever.Wood's writing and Walters' acting were a powerhouse of comedy..........

  • oh, Julie, you're hilarious! is that Celia Imrie, too?

  • Brilliant!

  • Julie Walters is a comedy genius

  • One of the best British comedy sketches - ever!

  • One soup and another soup lol

  • the british sense of homour is matchless!

(vincent is always the chef btw.)

  • I can just imagine. I bet he cooks food just by giving it a smouldering glance.

  • He certainly makes me hot...

  • Love it - but where's Vincent??? ;)

  • He's the chef...
