In 1920 there was a boxing gym in evert neighborhood in america. Participation is what creates and develops fighters. As for the rule differences it's a matter of interpretation of those rules. The clinching I've seen especially by fighters like Johnson would be considered excess holding today. His constant hitting on the breaks would not be allowed today as well. Johnson's right upper cut on the break seemed to bde his greatest weapon.

Years ago I heard that Johnson had trouble with several guys from the lighter weight classes. He even got his ass handed to him by a middleweight on at least one occasion.
I cannot imagine any rated heavyweight from the 70's, 80's or 90's that would have had trouble with even a great middleweight. Who would you have bet on in a fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and second rate heavyweight like Big John Tate. I'm not sure Sugar Ray could have handled Tex Cobb.

@moojeed when he 'struggled' with Stanley Ketchel (presumably the middleweight you're referring to), the only reason he didn't knock Ketchel out in the first round is because they had a deal that they'd keep the fight going so that they'd make more money from sales of the fight film in theatres. Ketchel went for Johnson unexpectedly in violation of the agreement in the 12th round, so Johnson knocked him out.
Johnson acquitted himself well against a number of large fighters, research your facts.

I have ticket stubs from 63 pro fights. I watched Ali lose to Spinks and I watched Holmes four times during his prime. I met Shavers, Norton and Weaver. I sparred with Bobbick when he was preparing to get his ass kicked by Ken Norton.
