The reality is that for an iPad to encourage reading, there must be an edition that will not allow any games or Internet application to be installed that would distract from the actual reading experience.
Would be nice to have all my textbooks (and even the ability to highlight and take quick notes) on my iPad. Honestly I think it would be worth it just for the textbooks alone (given that they have the ones that you need!) My physics book alone was 190$, textbooks for 1 year for the avg University student costs roughly 900-1200$ per year. An iPad may be expensive at first, but with this it would pay off if the books were significantly cheaper in the longer run for sure.

Obviously, we will not be able to get a hold of these textbooks on Macbooks, even though I have it for the iPad. Hopefully, we can still access it on other apple platform/products.
If I don't have an iPad, I'm compelled to buy one now!
Just hope I'm wrong or else I will think this is a way to exploit consumers. Not to mention : Pricey
I'm sure it will be a good educational tool. For now, it can be an unbelievably great supplement to textbooks but I'm not sure it can replace it with a device like iPad. iPad could be distracting, tiresome to the eyes, and a little finicky to take notes on (But I think a paper and pen can come in handy for this)
I find this funny, considering that no students at Lexington High School have these textbooks, and only a small percent have online textbooks at all...
Well this is a great idea however i dont think this will ever catch on, i mean dont get me wrong i like apple but dosent apple realize kids are destructive and tend to destroy and vandilize anything that belongs to a school district? epsecially middle schoolers(middle schoolers can be real animals) just look how most kids these days treat their texts books, they put grafitti, rocket penises and treat there books like shit, just imagine what would happen to the ipads in the hands of immature kids :P
@TheFishyNach0 Simple.. If the kid destroys the iPad then the parents will take responsibility and they will pay the value of the iPad !!
Also they can buy one of these Otterbox cases that protects iPads from heavy drops and violence...
Also they can punish the kid who destroys anything !! Like books.. if the kid destroys them or doesn't bring them then he will get punished and banished from school ;) !!
Also good point chancy, its not the fact that it's an apple product why people seem to dislike them, its the fact that they flaunt their features around like they're the only ones that do it, lulz
Bloody iSheep. If they released it like Google products across all platforms, this would be great but this is just a means for them to shove ipads down everyone's throats. Notice how they don't talk about price? Think textbooks are expensive right now? Wait till you're at the mercy of Apple and the publishers. lol.
@chancy319 Actually, what makes you think Google, Amazon, and so forth are just going to lay back and let Apple steal the show? Not all high school textbooks are mcgraw hill or pearson, I'm pretty sure they're on it. And these electronic book files are not expensive by far. They are as little as 15.00 dollars!
Sooooo, it's an ebook. iBooks is just an apple hype branded name for "ebooks" which has been around for quite some time in case the iSheep don't know. Not to mention you would be at the mercy of whatever Apple and the publishers dictate as price. Added to the fact that you can't resell or lend your book once you're done with it.
@JustAbe1020 they tried that at my school but we were able to get on a proxy server to get around it. Depending on the knowledge level of the students, this could be problem. We used to only be able to get the to "school approved" sites. Either way, I'm pretty sure I would have paid more attention with the iPad then I did with my bland books that offered very little pictures and trying to imagine historical facts never panned out right for me. This is a sweet idea.
@Listentothebeat1000 If you'd prefer to have an expensive, heavy, outdated resource, I can assure you that students in colleges all over America would love to sell you their textbooks for the price they paid.
This seems like it would be very useful. However, it is pretty frustrating to always hear from my friends living in the States (albeit jokingly) rubbing it in that new features like this have been added to their Apple products...while as a Canadian I am always forced to wait. For example, Siri still doesn't have Canadian place searching capabilities.
I am a student at Lexington High, and i strongly believe that ipads are a horrible idea, and i strongly discourage all schools from buying them. Spending money does not equal learning. 3/4 of students at my school play games whenever their teacher isn't looking, myself included. This is not learning. Learning is when a kid WANTS to listen to his teacher. It is when he or she is enthralled with gaining knowledge. School right now is not learning, it is memorization. This needs to change.
Yeah, the idea is good. But don't forget that not everyone can afford an iPad... And if this will happen in couple of years, everyone will have damaged eyes because of staring at iPad's screen all the time...
Hey we can always donate all the books to other countries. I take back my comment on students wanting to learn because of the tech. They will prolly just browse the web or youtube like I am doing in class right now. 5:04 translation.."students won't learn with textbooks because they suck and we need to find a way to get them lazy bitches to learn"

This sounded cool untill I heard its exclusive to apple products. My whole family uses Android and Google services, my Dad bought me my 2 brothers sister and my mom Samsung Galaxy tabs 10.1 versions so I don't care what my school says I will still be in class front & center with my Galaxy tab 10.1 I refuse to use an inferior product. I may be young but I am loyal. Google has brought me and my family together and made our lives so much easier and for that I thank them & will forever be a Googler
This is fucking INCREDIBLE. However, our children are going to be stupendously distracted with all of this technology around us and not realize the reality of the world, nature, the stars, the trees, the birds....it's revolutionary but also has its downsides.
@JustAbe1020 dude... they'll notice it. I'm the foremost engaged with all modern technology in my district and I'm actually a vegetarian for how much I appreciate nature. Not trying to hate on your top comment, just being realistic.
@makeitso6174 Appreciate your response but realistically, have you seen the younger generation of the United States lately? You've got to admit, they literally, GLUE themselves in front of 55 inch television sets for hours, stare at their phones texting, and browse the web/facebook/youtube stupendously. This is NOT good. This is not how children are to spend their god-damn childhood. I'm 20 and saying this, lmao. I am glad that you notice it and appreciate the nature that surrounds you!
Wow I would definently use this virtual textbook. The online textbooks I'm currently use cost just as much as a physical copy for a code mandatory for assignments and they just suck I end up buying a used physical copy, this would save me money in the long run.

Plus so many kids would just play games or surf the internet.
And how much does this all cost? 500$ EACH student! Talk about going dirt poor idiots.
