  • beautiful Mercedes. The GL450 starts at around $63,000 with 335 HP V-8, while the GL550 starts at around $80,000 with 382 HP V-8. Either way, this is a luxurious beast of a car!

    I think the Escalade has loads more style than the GL450. The only thing I think that is better in the GL450 is the full power third row.

  • Sorry i didnt take into account reliability, engine performance, towing capacity, cargo room, and room for people. All of which destroys the mercedes. The GL is just a glorified mini van.

  • Completely wrong. The Mercedes tows barely less despite being a unibody design and with an IRS. It also outperforms the Cadillac too, so I don't know where you're getting that. The Mercedes has about as much rom and is smaller outside. And the people thing is proof you've never sat in the back of either vehicle. The Mercedes has tons more space because of the IRS, and the Escalades don't have much headroom for their size. The Cadillac is just a glorified Tahoe wishing it was as good.

If you take into account the escalade esv there is not a mercedes on the market that can compete its cargo room. I have sat in the back of both i own an escalade and my brother in-law has a GL. The mercedes is nice if you like that Glorified mini van look. Ill take the glorified tahoe any day.

  • I doubt I said it beats the Mercedes in interior space; if I did, I didn't mean it, I was thinking and typing and made a typo. The Escalade ESV does obviously have more room, but the third row is still uncomfortable considering other vehicles for the price. I find the Cadillac cheap looking, WAY too much chrome, beyong the extra for class. And it's not nice strips, it's big blobs of it where ever it's put. And American? I just bought an "American" car five months ago.

I also like German cars, especially Audis, and Italian cars (of course), especially Ferraris (over Lamborghinis), but the Escalade, in this case, is clearly the better car. And yes, it does get better fuel economy. What do you say about the Hybrid version??
  • Escalade's better. And here comes all the thumbs down from people. I have a big book called "Consumer Guide Car and Truck Test". The headline from the Cadillac Escalade is "It might be more luxurious than the Mercedes-Benz GL320 and GL450, but the Lexus LX570 outshines the Escalade." Try to guess what the GL's headline was. "The GL450 was not quite as glamorous as GM's full-size luxury SUV, the Cadillac Escalade, but it was just as luxurious as the GMC Yukon Denali and still nice." Go Escalade!!

  • i have a gl450 and it is by far countless measures above in comfort, ergo & class than an escalade. i have yet to drive a comfortable & responsive american suv. 'bling' is USELESS to me if the vehicle drives like a PIG!

    the only more comfortable large suv (than the mercedes) i have driven is a lexus lx470. it is nice but a little too soft for me.

    dont like bimmers, so i never tried the x5.

    gl has everything you need for off road, on road and any kind of weather (it's a full time 4wd vehicle).

  • Hell no. I have a Consumer Guide book (it's a HUGE book) with every car for 2008. It has every car's handling rating, fuel economy, ride quality, safety features, front seat room, rear seat room, cargo room, and quietness. The Escalade won very slightly in those categories. Then it comes to luxury features. Just counting the LINES (and the lines are equal in length), the Escalade had 26 lines, and the GL had 21 lines. The GL is less sporty, less luxurious, and less fuel-efficient. Not great. FU.

    but, real life is much more different. i have driven the escalades, my friends have escalades. it is a typical over gadgetized poorly ergonomically designed american car. there is nothing in the escalade i found remotely luxurious except the front seat meant for huge fat asses.

    btw: i think one needs to 'read' more escalade reviews as the majority of them are very negative.

    tip on life: trying owning luxury cars before commenting.

    The GL320 has worse fuel economy than the Escalade. That is a PROVEN fact. The GL320 is slower and much weaker than the Escalade, though it's the same price. How is the GL320 more luxurious? Name four features that the GL320 has that the Escalade doesn't. Wait, now you have to name 8, because I'll list four that the Escalade has that the GL320 doesn't - interior air filter, radio controls on the steering wheel, satellite radio, and Onstar. ?

  • man are u dumb? The stability control in the GL is much better, the performance is much greater, the luxury is much better. Most of all, Escalade is made by GM and GM is american so they are shit. their interior feels uterly cheap. Cadilacs will never live up to the expectations of European cars period. lastly why are u comparing an escalade to a 320, shouldnt it be 420 or 500?

  • A few things. First, the Escalade competes with the GL450. The Escalade PLATINUM competes with the Mercedes GL550. Second, performance is greater?!! Which car has 70bhp more? And 0 to 60 times are the same in the GL450 than they are in the Escalade, 6.5 seconds. Let me read some luxury features to you that the Escalade has while the GL450 lacks (I have a Consumer Guide): one more zone for climate contrlos, tilt wood-leather wrapped steering wheel w/ radio controls, remote start, satellite radio.

  • Horsepower doesn't mean it's faster. C&D got 5.9 0-60 in the 550, 6.5 in the 450. MT got similar results. The Escalade's weight and taller gearing hurts it, but it's still obscenly fast for something so huge.

  • If the Escalade is not faster than the GL450 (which I highly doubt, considering that the Mercedes-Benz site says that the GL450 gets from 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds and not 6.5 like the Escalade, but you might be right), then it is definitely as quick to 60mph. The GL450 is a weakling. The Escalade has 68 more horsepower (very significant difference), 1.5 more liters (give or take), and WAY more standard features (ex: power liftgate, leather upholstery, heated 2nd-row seats, memory system, etc.)

  • I strongly encourage you to read some reviews of the two from independent testers. Mercedes is known, like Porsche and Ferrari, for underestimating the performance of their products. Both the 450 and Esc AWD are about the same to 60 and the Merc has pulled ahead by 100 mph. Just looking at power numbers isn't enough.

    Like I said before, the Escalade costs more, so it SHOULD have more. It's almost 65K for a base Esc AWD versus a base GL450. Leather is also standard too in the Benz.

  • Well leather must be standard in the GL450 as of 2009, because I have a consumer guide book that says that the 2008 Mercedes GL450 has standard vinyl upholstery.

    Here's what the Escalade has that the GL450 lacks: power liftgate, memory system, heated 2nd-row seats, tri-zone climate controls, and 14-way power seats. (And I think the GL450 might also lack a standard power sunroof, though I might be wrong about that.)

    The Escalade is a much better buy if you have $4,000 extra.

  • And here are things the Escalade lacks as standard: 4WD, power tilt/tel wheel, transfer case, front side airbags (not even available), adjustable second row seats, over-sized dual sunroofs, etc etc.

    For less than 10K, you can buy all the Caddy's standard features, paying some extra money for a vehicle that then has everything the Caddy has as well as many things the Caddy doesn't. The Cadillac costs less ... but then again the Mercedes gets easily better mileage, so it would balance out.

  • That is, to go off my other reply, 10 grand over the GL450's 60K base price. So equipped with essentially everything off hand I see the Escalade has, it costs less than 5K more. Still, most independent testers average 12-13 in the Cadillac, whereas the MB returned as much as 18 mpg (thanks to the 7-speed and far less weight). That's a huge difference, and most owners would easily SAVE money in that sense over the years buying the Benz.

  • Um, no the Escalade is not $10K more than the GL450, but an Escalade AWD is probably about $7,000 more than a GL450 (4Matic). $7,000 worth of options MIGHT buy all of the features I mentioned (the features that the Escalade has while the GL450 lacks), but what about power? Shouldn't the Escalade get to be more expensive because it has 68 more horsepower? I thought the $7,000 price difference covered the interior amenities. What covers the power?

  • No, I meant the GL with the Escalade's standard features costs less than 10K extra compared to a stripped 450. And like I've said 100 times, the Cadillac is not faster. Check reviews and tests, not just what manufaturers claim. The same goes for fuel economy. Testers get much better with the 450 and still eek out a decent amount better with the 550.

  • Consumer reports stated in an issue that the escalade goes 0-60 in 7.5 seconds and that the GL goes 0-60 in 7.4 seconds thats not much of a big difference.................

    But I will take a bone with the GL320. It is NOT more fuel INefficient than the Escalade ... not by a long shot. The 320 averages mpg in the 20s. Read C&D's article on it, for example. No Esclade in HISTORY, not even the new Hybrid, can get anywhere near that. Is the 320 slower? Absolutely. But with 400 lb-ft @ 1600 rpm versus 417 @ 4400 rpm in the Caddy, you wouldn't notice it at all in regular driving.

  • BULL SHIT!!! I got a GL and the Brakes are stiffer then on my G35. It barries it self if you just slightley touch the brakes.
