  • beholder? too soon... too soon...

  • @luccaruto watch the dm commentary episodes, he explaines that the beholder is dead but the players dont know that.

  • A beholder already? What level are these guys? :-p

  • HOLY FUCK YES! A beholder!!! :D

  • I got the red box but didnt really get it...... But when I watch this I learn something and I start to get a better idea on what to do, thanks !

  • I'm guessing the floating eyeball looking creater is rither a Beholder or a gass spore.

  • 4e seems way to cake. too easy.

  • Do these guys not have encounter powers and at will abilities? Standing under a hammer that's about to fall on you seems like a good time to use something more powerful than just standard weapon damage.

  • If they split the party.. I know a certain song that would've fit perfectly in the background.

  • i know that floating ball of flesh from magicka

  • 1:39 best part ever XD

  • where do u get this?

  • What version is this? If its 4th, please can you tell me where you got the DM screen?

  • @tezpuzzlemazter That DM screen comes with the Dungeon Master Kit. You can get it on Amazon.com for around $30. The kit comes with the screen, a rule book, monster/hero tokens and 2 double sided maps.

  • @tezpuzzlemazter D&D essentials, DM Kit.

  • beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. (insert epic music here)

  • "This Never happens!" xD started laughing so dam hard

  • So awesome, they're only on the first room and are getting worked over already lol.

  • Chris says you have to use healing surges outside of combat-which isnt entirely true-you can use second wind to spend a surge during battle while gaining plus 2 to AC

  • I must say that the 4th Edition brought this : an easy non-weird way to play DnD. Because the previous editions were more nerdy.

  • @beatboxpeej I'd say it's still equally as weird to witness people playing. Just less numbery.

  • @Uaxis My point is that people will always call people nerds for obsessing over something.

  • @Uaxis Or using intelligence in general. So what does that tell you? Nerd isn't necessarily an insult, that's what.

  • Question for D and D players and DMs-

What's the IC idea for Healing Surges like? How would they be role played? Is it just a matter of "walking it off", is it some sort of obvious mystic effect? Or is it a rare trait inherent to all with the heart to call themselves Adventurers?

  • @HotaruZoku I like to think of it as kind of endurance thing that the adventurers do. like when you're running and you know you'll finish first if you just push yourself.

  • @link2110 Ahhh. Nice. Thanks.

  • @HotaruZoku I tend to treat HP a little differently than you might expect. To me, the first half of Max HP lost is stuff like dodges that used up a lot of stamina, blocks that left one's arm aching, arrows that hit a trinket covering one's heart, unwanted haircuts, and other things like that. The second half, is stuff like black eyes, bleeding, dislocation of joints, and other things along those lines. With those things, it is easy enough to have an idea of how spending a healing surge works.

  • @markermage Ahhhhhh no. I get it, and like the idea. "Hit Points gone = death" always struck me as a bit simplistic, and it never lended itself well to the really drawn out fatiguing fights where the greatest concern was "Death of a Thousand Cuts".

I dig that way of looking at it. Dramatic. "Exalted-like" even. I thought I was the only one who injected a bit more Wuxia into his D and D.

  • @HotaruZoku Glad you like it. It also gives the players a clue about when the enemy has gotten down to half HP, which I'm sure they would enjoy. And it can have a nice impact on how monsters with abilities that require them to be at half HP are role played.

Also, you can still use the more impressive injuries for when HP runs out. Those earlier blows could just be weakening the target to where they can't defend themself from the finishing blow.

  • @HotaruZoku "Walking it off" makes it sound kind of...Cheap. I think the idea isn't so much that they're "walking it off" as much as they're fucked up, but they're pushing through the pain. Imagine that the character is down, hurt, bleeding, and just generally fucked up. They want to just go home, but they know they HAVE to finish this fight. They reach deep down inside of them and pull out a burst of vitality that they didn't realize they had. They get back up and get ready to finish it.

  • @TwilightDuality Now that's dramatic. Daddy likes, and will be using something akin to that in his own games. Well said.

  • Don't you know, you never split the party,

Clerics in the back, keep those fighters hale and hearty,

Wizards in the middle so that they can shed some light,

and never let that damned thief out of sight.

  • I'm definitely in the old school crowd but I have no hatred for the new versions. I like some of the ideas, like AC makes a lot more sense. Remember that a DM is free to choose the rules he likes, and nothing says that you have to take each addition in their entirety. Currently, my group uses some aspects of the old, and some of the new.

  • So, the points after combat you spend are like "eating food points".Heh.

  • @grandobsidian Surges aren't really a "Fuck off" it's more a "Well, how bout I save you some spells and heal myself up and you can use your spells in combat where they're probably going to be more useful"

  • so surges are a "fuck off" to clerics?

  • @grandobsidian

Not at all. Clerics used to be near-mandatory. Now there are various healers, the healers don't waste their attack by healing (a huge improvement to the fun of playing a cleric, rather than just converting all your spells to cure every game), and you take a butt-ton more damage from mobs so you will often need to surge. You can also do some cool stuff with surges; the thing to remember is that the balance has changed, and classes with previously little to do have options in combt

  • @falcoboat that makes sense. I'm still stuck on the old way. i can see how that would help since there are people (like one of my friends) who don't understand running a cleric and end up letting people die

  • @grandobsidian I don't want to start a polemic but the point was more that healing classes have fun options now. A more extreme example is the wizard: at level 1 as an Elf putting your second highest roll into Con grants you between 5 and 6 health, unless you "waste" a feat (nobody takes toughness at high level but they want it at level 1). That is 1 hit from most mobs (don't mention Orcs with 3xcrit). You have 2-3 spells and a very weak attack. Very boring and weak to play. 4E has a lot more.

  • @grandobsidian

No, Healing Surges are a "We don't NEED you" to Clerics. Now, groups don't NEED to pigeon-hole a single player to be a Cleric if none of the players want to (but they still help a lot).

  • Natural 20, we'd get an additional roll for a critical hit score. We'd name the area, like the heart or throat or a critical area on a foe, and then if successful, the creature would be killed instantly! Imagine how much fun that is when the moment is most desperate!

  • Fourth edition turns me off once I start hearing this "healing surge" nonsense! True D&D would never have a ridiculous mechanic like this. Carry healing potions you lazy adventurer! Many items can heal. This is sacrilege!

    I'll stick with 1st or 2nd edition.

  • @Terragen

Stick with 1st and 2nd then, we'll have fun with a balanced, realistic and thoroughly explored system with logical rules. You can have your weapons break, a completely unbalanced and ridiculous character creation and management system and have no new content or support. I'm cool with that.

  • @falcoboat I didnt need your permission, dick.

Stick with your over-priced, ruination of the good name of D&D, WoW-ripoff system for children. Logic, in a fantasy game? No thanks.

Fourth edition is garbage. Weapons break in reality fool. What are you, retarded?

  • @Terragen Magical weapons break in reality? Random statistics are used to determine someone who can go on to become a hero, rather than someone who is inherently skilled being much more likely to be the hero in the first place? I gave advice, not permission, "dick". Learn the difference (maybe read a book or two). Logic within fantasy and within rules or rule sub-sets is still vital. Established canon must make sense for people to invest in it. Well, intelligent people. WoW rips off D&D......

  • First of all, wtf? Very high CR for their lvl.

And secondly, I immediatly knew it was a cast Beholder. Their always blind if their casters. XD

  • you can spend an action point to get a healing surge in combat

  • u can spend an action point to get a healing surge in combat

  • @Helkawat haha good luck dude just hope you got some good budys to play D&D with thats my trouble finding people to play

  • 7:28 = ZING!!!

  • hahahah theywalked into a beholder lol

  • This series has me ordering the DM book...

  • THE BEHOLDER!!!!!!!!

  • this reminds of me of when i had my charecter lick a kobald

  • Ah, niiiiice. You know he's done good when he's found himself a beholder.

  • whait a sec.... if the hamer falls, dosnt that mean it would hit Ranrock?

  • @REfanboy96 It's not an automatic hit, it's an attack vs his armor class if he's standing, or an attack vs his touch ac if he was prone (still on the ground). He's not gunna stand there and try to stop the hammer with his face, he's going to defend himself in some way.

  • @Syfa i've never heard of touch ac in 4e

  • @TheMarukeru I wasn't aware that it was 4e quite yet :P

  • NEEEEEEEERDS!

    The byproduct of Robot Chicken

  • lol "can we eat it?"

  • I wanna play this lol

  • Maybe I'm just nitpicking, which is easy in my position. But I believe he should have explained the second wind rule. "once per encounter you can use your second wind ability to spend a single healing surge and regain your surge value, as a standard action. This allows you to self heal during combat." He probably had his reasons, or it slipped his mind.

  • why did you guys stop up loading the videos to the podcast?

  • What level are they? Thats a Death Tyrant he dropped down on them lol.

  • this is absolutely amazing, thank you for upping this and thank you wotc for making this happen.

  • I love how much fun Kevin (the new guy who thought D&D meant drinks and dining) is having. It shows how much potential the game has for anyone in the right mindset.

  • thinkin the same thing

  • D&D means drinks and dining, lol. First time I heard that, but then again I do drink and dine when I play D&D.

  • @GDMarin I KNOW! I can't wait for my first game, I'm christain and I'm LOVING these vids. Can't wait ^_^

  • ultrafail

  • @GDMarin Seems to me a good dungon master can make this game fun for just about anyone.

  • A behloder with a hollowed out, central eye. They're in deep shit. lol

  • aw...the statue only rolled a 1...

I wanted him to be crushed!

  • A beholder?!

  • I wonder where I could get that sound effect of the kid's going "yay!" ?

  • They used their Healing surges after the combat, which is a legal move, while in combat, they would have had to use their "Second Wind" which is usable once per encounter

  • Shame that they didn't utilise the Bards Song of Rest class ability, teaching players 'bout their class features would really help bring a sense of how they can contribute to a party.

  • These are all pretty fun to watch.

  • You can spend a healing surge in combat... it's just an encounter power... is this a prototype 4.0?

  • He's not mentioning Second Wind as it's not relevant at this time. I think someone talks about using Second Wind in an earlier episode.

  • No he just said you can ONLY use it out of combat. He must mean you can only spend as many surges as you want out of combat, but that's not what he said.

  • Yeah, I think that's what he means. During combat, you can heal by using Second Wind and spend one healing surge. Outside of combat, you can take a short rest and use as many healing surges as you want.

Second Wind being the only healing power every character gets, and the fact that it can only be used once to spend a single healing surge, is the reason why healers are still important in D&D 4th edition.

  • Second Wind.

    Encounter; Standar Action.

Effect: You Spend a Healing Surge and regain a number of hit points equal to your Healing Surge value. You gain a +2 bonus to all defenses until the start of your next turn.

  • They should have justed wasted em with a crossbow..

  • Hey! Put that beholder to good use! :)

Here's hoping they go after it. Would be nice to see some beholding action, lol ^^

  • Best episode so far.

  • I have that same beholder mini. It's awesome. Trying to figure out a way to justify using it in the game I run.

  • You could have them run into a magical sphere, put a lever by a door, and have the lever unlock the sphere instead of the door :D

  • Use it as a dummy beholder. To scare any player that knows what it is. Or perhaps if theres a way to make illusions?

  • It's a moot point, I'm afraid. TPK tonight. Luck was not with the players at all and then they stabbed the dagger into their own heart with a rather bad decision.
