  • I am really surprised at the young man sporting a tattoo on his right arm 5 seconds from the end.

  • GREAT INFO BY PHIL EVERLY & CHET ATKINS AT 3.50 MIN. !!

    THANKS FOR POSTING THIS !

    ERIK TIELMAN, FLORIDADADAAA

  • ........\0/...........

  • Thank you for posting this...people stop the stupid fighting...music is love...appreciate all of it...black.white.brown.yellow.purple.red...ya'll make me sad...

  • wow rockabilly really makes people angry. maybe there should be MA ratings on rockabilly cds.

  • Simple: If you love RocknRoll, you cant be racist.

  • @ScumbagJackReturnz Reality is not necessary based on truth. You can go on accepting a liars reality like a cow being lead to slaughter.

  • @ScumbagJackReturnz The Caucasian culture has already long ago took over the world that's why there is a McDonald's on every corner of every city in the world. You cant stop truth and righteousness's.Blacks lust after Whites. Soon it will be almost impossible to find an all black person anywhere but Africa.Blacks are there own worst enemy.

  • @ScumbagJackReturnz If education turns me into a weak minded follower then Id gladly stay"dumb".LOL I have 5 children ages 11-19 My thoughts and wisdom will never die!HA HA HA HA HA

  • @ScumbagJackReturnz The only race in all of history to pen the words ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL was the White Caucasian Anglo race.NO blacks said it, no Indians, no Jews, no Asians, none but the Caucasians.Native Americans were a murderous bunch, just like tribal Africans. If freedom was left up to Indians we would all be dead even other Indians.Tribal people are the root of racism and prejudice.Hawaiians are some of the worst. Thinking that island belongs only to them.

  • @ScumbagJackReturnz lol you hypocrite>How can your fingers let you type with such hypocrisy. You are raciest. In fact the black race as a whole are some of the most raciest people in the world.Blacks hate everyone even other blacks. The black race is a vain, hate filled corrupt race.If freedom was left in the hands of blacks we would all be slaves.

  • @ScumbagJackReturnz What make the world a dreary place is ignorant people whose thoughts are guided by unrighteous racism.Blacks have brought very little to the world. O, the blacks did bring slavery to the world I will give the black African race%100 credit for the creation of slavery. Its blacks that refuse to give credit were credit is due.More white men and women have died in the fight for freedom then ANY other race.

  • @ScumbagJackReturnz All blacks hail from Africa .With out The influence of white string music/guitar, black music would be all drums.Rock and roll is not all drums.Without Whites all blacks would be third world tribalistic drum beaters. Not to mention without the English language there wouldn't be rock and roll, as we know it.All blacks learned English from Whites. The black race owes Caucasians for all the good they have.

  • @mr7thDay You can give credit were credit is due,as I initially did when I said rock and roll is a compilation of all the worlds music or you can be an immature raciest standing for the black race. Then we can fight till the end.Its your choice.

  • Rock and roll is a compilation of all the music in the world.Black and white Americans together are equally responsible for the greatest music ever made!

  • I still have that record that they showed someone looking at in the record store.

  • i love sun records

  • What is doing in this documentary the french singer Sylvie Vartan

    We see her twice ???

  • Terrific video. Informative and fun filled with great memories.

  • yeah surely rockabilly was before rnr as it comes from rocked up country/blues mr perkins ect ect i asked a 65 year old guy whos into rnr rockabilly big time he got everthing he said rockabilly got to be a three piece no piano!just gonna play some b5's on my geetar

  • "yeah surely rockabilly was before rnr" No, the rock & roll sound was around in '49 with recordings like "Rock This Joint" by Jimmy Preston & "Jumpin' At The Jubilee" by Joe Turner, & then Haley invented rockabilly shortly after that when he got interested in that rock & roll sound and mixed it with country. There was "black" jump blues mixed with country as of the early '40s, such as "Porky's Boogie Woogie On The Strings" by P. Freeman, but the "black" jump blues of that era wasn't rock & roll.

  • This ALL came from the Blues. I will try to dig up some old stuff, but you can hear JC's rhythms in old 1920's delta stuff. Like the evolution of anything, from that came Rag, Swing, Traditional Country, etc. Those gave rise to other 'genres' like Rock n Roll, Modern Jazz, Modern Blues, Modern Country and so on. Music became more complex. Playing a flat5 might have gotten you killed in the 1300's.

    Wanda Jackson said it right.

  • You can find the roots of American blues in West Africa...african Instruments like the Xalam, ngoni,Kora, and Kalimba are all over West Africa.

  • That's true. African slaves made instruments out of old cans and wires, and mixed tradicional rythms with work songs, and other moment inspirations. Blues were born, and then jazz, r'n'b (true one), r'n'r, rockabilly, country is a clash of blues and European balads, soul, funk, ska, reggae, etc.. BB King resumes it all in one musician. We could say the same about music from Brasil, p. ex..

  • Eddie Rabbitt talking about Rockabilly, give me a break, like his music really shows his rockabilly roots????

  • Rock n roll was the music, rockabilly was the special touch and style added to the era, and by the way it'll never die.

  • i like country, i love gospel, but this music is way too simple sometimes..

  • Anybody at all know how I can get myself a copy of this documentary series? Watched it over here in NZ a few years ago, taped it but my step-dad taped over it. Would be rapt to have it again

  • 50s rock n roll rockabilly all kool music

  • I agree with you;KoolKat.I also think that Wanda Jackson and Dolly Parton were spot on.I loved The Collins kids.Gosh;could he play!Great video.Thanx.

  • rockabilly is no more than a style of rock n' roll

  • for ever rockabilly!

  • Rockabilly came out before rock n' roll. And there is definately traces of country in rock n roll too.

    ................

No it didn't.Rockabilly is Rock n Roll (rhythm and blues + Country/Hillbilly music

  • can u guys please shut the fuck up

learn what real rockabilly is about and then comment in this thread ok?

  • Rockabilly is a mix of black and white influence r&b,blues, country it's easy to define reverb and echo are commonplace .

  • The middle 50's was an extraordinary era for American Country/rock music. It

brought R&B and country music to the greater white Americam public. It's the basis for all rock music to-day.

  • cool video.lame comments.rockabilly hillbilly r&b (old)country gospel..it all rocks and or rolls..

  • I love rockabilly, but with all due respect to all the great artists, all the documentary,s and conversations Ive ever heard pertaining to the subject, The one person always overlooked and never mentioned is rick nelson, rick sold more rockabilly records than anyone with the exception of elvis. If you want to here the best give a listen to Rick's milk cow blues,my buckets got a hole in it, believe what you say,my one desire, now even covered by The stray cats!

  • Sorry - double Maddox :) On the other hand if someone doesn't hear difference between rockabilly and rock'n'roll must be dull.

  • music is great it fuses every one together no matter there race or creed. People lighten up on who did what. Music is good I say we should give credit to both black and whites for making this sound just leave us natives alone aparently we did nothing for music.... get over your selves people.

  • British documentaries are always of the highest quality--they tend to be more meticulous, making sure that nobody gets left out--like the American rockabilly documentary producers always do to Bill Haley.

Thanks for posting this great clip!

  • I think it's fair to say that historically black music has been more exploited by whites than white music by blacks.

  • It's always been a 'give and take' since day 1--even when "Dixieland" music was created it was by black AND white southerners playing white European designed band instruments. Even the basic Banjo and Drum was combined with the frame construction of Euro design to bring it up to the durable, dependable and professional-grade serious musical instrument that they both became--and we're still making improvements to this day!

  • exploited? how about appropriated and rocked just fine.. Who cares who started it and what color they were ..

  • In the music business there is no racial prejudice. Its always other professions.

It works both ways-blacks recorded white music (country) and whites recorded black music

  • We don't care about your whores Nettasoccermomgk!!!!!

  • By any chance does anybody know who's singin from :39 to :47?

  • "By any chance does anybody know who's singin from :39 to :47?" Broonzy maybe? Anyway, it's the wrong era and style thing to play there -- guys Cash's age would have heard stuff on Memphis radio more like Louis Jordan's "Saturday Night Fish Fry" and John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillen."

  • It's Sonny Terry and Brownie Maghee

  • But Leo Fender brought all this into the spotlight in 1950's with his ELECTRIC guitars - (got my first Tele in 1957 along with his Pro Amp) yeah, it's Blues, R & B, GOSPEL, country, etc...but listen to the dif when that electric guitar comes in - thanks to Luther, Chuck, Buddy, Bo, Chet, et al. Think of the voices that were brought out by that back up electric Tele' or Strat..

  • Electric guitars were completely normal in jump blues and in country (and in lots of other styles) during '44-'50, before rockabilly. Sonny Boy Williamson had electric guitar on his records in '39, Al Dexter also before '40, Tampa Red in '40, Ernest Tubb in '42, T-Bone Walker in '42, etc. etc.

  • And Mother Maybelle Carter in 1927...

  • In response to the race comments: I recall a interview with Roy Orbison where he mentions that they , the rockabilly cats, Thought they WERE playing like black folks ! He laughed and said they, the rockabilly cats, were unaware that it was a hybrid form of music ! They thought it was R&B !

  • It ain't dead : Junior Brown - Broke Down South of Dallas

  • why you watchin then chromium? if you could be bothered to check out al ferrier i'm sure you'd think differently

  • White people just didnt have it

  • Complete and utter bollocks.

  • I love it, and I think it is very important to speak about the good old time! Because I think we won´t have it again!

    thx for the video!

  • Some of you racist rockabilly singers today hate that rockabilly has blues and r&b roots.

  • Umm... It is commonly celebrated among rockabilly artists that it's roots are partly in blues. Many rockabilly artists performed with greats such as B.B. King and even Louis Armstrong. Educate yourself, HOTma18. Search "Cash Satchmo" on youtube and watch the video.

  • In short, SURPRISE! You're the racist, HOTma18, with your assumptions and stereotypes.

  • That's the stupidest comment I've read today.

  • I LOVE WANDA!! Shes STILL Great live!! I wish i coulda seen Cash though but Where's Janis on this??

  • It should be Country and Rock n Roll = Rockabilly

    Because country was before rockabilly

    Great video

  • Agree!

  • Yep! You're right

    Also:

    Blues + Gospel = Rock'n'Roll

    Country + Rock'n'Roll = Rockabilly

    Gospel + Blues + Country + Dean Martin + Ballads = Elvis :)

Damn, I should work in Mojo or Rollin' Stone

  • Rockabilly came out before rock n' roll. And there is definately traces of country in rock n roll too. And Dean Martin and Elvis were VERY different from each other. Elvis was the first to put feelings into his songs

  • "Rockabilly came out before rock n' roll." Other way around. The word "rockabilly" was invented to describe mixing rock and roll style music (such as "Rock The Joint" by Chris Powell and "Rock H-Bomb Rock" by H-Bomb Ferguson) with "hillbilly" style music.

  • Alan Freed started to call R&B (or race music) for rock n' roll in 1951, but the rock n roll before and after 1955 are very different from eachother. That was because the swinging melody of country music got involved. You'll find the difference between pre- and post-1955 rock n roll by listening to Big Joe Turner and Elvis version of Shake Rattle and Roll

  • "the rock n roll before and after 1955 are very different from eachother."

I disagree. For instance I think if the Jackson Brothers' "We're Gonna Rock This Joint" from '52 had been released in '57 everyone now would "know" it was rock and roll just fine, and wouldn't be surprised it was made in '57, because that's what it sounds like, rock and roll.

  • "That was because the swinging melody of country music got involved."

I'm not sure what you mean by "swinging melody," but R&B as of '50-'55 was generally _more_ "swing"-rhythm-based than C&W of '50-'55 generally was.

  • The melody comes from country music. Hank Williams, Gene Autry, Jimmie Rodgers etc. R&B is pure rhythm and has no melody in it. Rock n roll and Rockabilly is a mixture of those above. Here's the timeline: Blues -> R&B(Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner) -> Rockabilly(That's All Right, Rock Around The Clock) -> Rock n' Roll(Long Tall Sally, Hound Dog)

  • "R&B is pure rhythm and has no melody in it." Huh? Louis Jordan put at least as much emphasis on melody as Chuck Berry did.

  • Louis Jordan has absolutely no melody in his songs - he talks or grawls rather than sing. R&B is all about that good old rhythm - bass, drums and saxophone.

  • "Louis Jordan has absolutely no melody in his songs - he talks or grawls rather than sing." Right, in contrast to Chuck Berry. For instance: Louis's "Ain't That Just Like A Woman," no melody, Chuck's "Ain't That Just Like A Woman," melody. Thank you Carter Family.

  • Louis Jordan and Joe Turner were the first to mix Jump blues and boogie woogie together. You didn't have rules or melody to play R&R.Early Rockers of the 50's covered their songs.

  • yea, a good friend of mine and playing partner of 15 years, played with Joe Turner. When you listen to guys like Blind Arthur Blake, you can hear rock n roll, too. For anyone who hasn't listened to Blind Blake, do so.

  • Yeah but they sang R&B music. For example, listen to Big Joe Turner's version of Shake Rattle and Roll, and then listen to Elvis' version. You'll hear the revolution - the revolution of rock music.

  • "Yeah but they sang R&B music. For example, listen to Big Joe Turner's version of Shake Rattle and Roll, and then listen to Elvis' version. You'll hear the revolution - the revolution of rock music." Have you heard Joe Turner's "Jumpin' At The Jubilee"? It's rock and roll from five years before Elvis began recording. Other examples of rock and roll before Elvis are "Rock H-Bomb Rock" by H-Bomb Ferguson and "Poppa Stoppa" by Pee Wee Crayton.

  • ...and Merril E. Moore, who along with Jordan, were the Daddies of R&R.

  • Joseph - your statement is the only true post here I think. Rock'n'roll is simply R&B that was played long before Haley or Elvis. Rock + Hillbilly (Hank, Maddox Maddox Brothers & Rose, etc.) = Elvis and Rockabilly. People get your facts straight!

  • Good Stuff
