I know this was posted a hell of a long time ago, but--ethanol nets better explosions, it's far more volatile, depending on the octane level lol o.o

Ethanol is more volatile. Gasoline is more commonly used for film because the explosions burn much dirtier. Gasoline explosions are backed with black smoke, making them look a lot cooler. You can see some fire that is much more transparent in this video that was done with propane. In my opinion gasoline gives the best look for film.

No opinion on No2? If it could be controlled much more easily... But, seeing as you seem to be in a more... 'Personal relative knowledge' of explosions, No2 would be much harder to control right? Pair it with gasoline and you have a heck of an explosion though... I think ... Damned Hollywood effects, they make everything so confused... (goes off topic)

When doing explosions for film, unfortunately the goal isn't to make the biggest bang. The goal is to design an explosive that appears to be large and dangerous, but is actually very tame. Thats why you see stunt guys standing only a few feet away from them and not getting hurt. Movie explosions have to be relatively quiet and really underpowered. Gasoline is the fuel of choice because it looks awesome and doesn't burn very hot.
