I just love imagining, perhaps 2 billion years from now, long after the human race is gone, this example of human perfection spinning through deep space. Amazing
Instead of compiling a set of culturally diverse images and sounds to tell the story of earth. The next Voyager-like mission can just contain a copy of Wikipedia.
The committeemen that made the record for NASA was headed by none other than Carl Sagan. He was to say the least a very vocal atheist, I doubt a bible was included, but an overview of the spiritual side of humanity was surely included.
who really gives a phoque if mozart was born in Bavaria, and what not, this is like to show human culture, and its music. Either way, this soprano is amazing :) Her diction is amazing
When mozart was born in 1756 in salzburg, this was a part of the kingdom of bavaria. which means he is a german. but today salzburg is a part of austria. Who cares.....
music like this will scare the crap out of the aliens man, shoulda put some jimi hendrix in there along with a big bag of weed. they would make us their gods.
@nilayozsuer at least they can see the picture/scribbling on it, or feels the texture. But what if they're all amoebas? Then we just waste our time, technology, and effort.
This is 'Der Hoelle Rache,' from 'Die Zauberfloete.' This one is interesting for what it demonstrates about the the science of sound as it relates to the potential of the human voice, which I guess is one reason it was chosen. The high notes she reaches are whistle register F6s, which are about the highest notes you will find in the classical vocal repertoire. Higher tones than that have been achieved, but not in what we would consider art music.
@7xXx666xXx7 Yes, most of the brilliant genius are from Germany. Like Albert Einstein and Werner von Braun. I wonder why Einstein's most important work was written in Switzerland. And Werner von Braun, who made Voyager mission possible, why on earth did he helped launching US rockets instead of German's? By the way, I don't believe that Leibniz stole Newton's work on calculus. Newton just a jealous guy.
Dont misunderstand the work. I think what she is saying, in German, or any other language, isnt as important as how it is being said. I dont understand German but i can hear the unmistakable emotions the composer is trying to convay. The joy and the pain, its all there, you have but only to listen for it. The "alien race" will hear it as well if they listen.
@soccom8341576 i dont think german is arbitrary at all. quite the opposite actually (cf english, french).
The orthography is very predictable, the prononciation is fully phonetic, the grammar is richer and this might be slightly challenging yet there are no exemptions. only the synax mignt be not quite as flexible as the english one.... why do you think german is arbitrary
@Balden2: Hahaha! I had an LOL moment with your comment -- good grief, you're right, it's kind of inappropriate for a "We come in peace" golden record!
Well first of all the record has 116 images of earth on it and all this music on it too. The pourpose of this record is so that if there were Aliens that dont know about earth can see and hear what we are like and if they can travel in space they can come visit us. How? The cover of the golden record has the location of the earth and soloar system acording to the stars around us and our location in the Milky Way.
The chances of this thing ever being found are very very slim. It was really more of a statement. I think chances are much higher that someday, if we don't destroy ourselves, humanity will find it. More of an interstellar time capsule really.
The only question i want it's answer in this life, is if anything would ever get this Golden record and get to study it.

German is such an arbitrary language even most Earthlings don't get anyway.
The high pitched noise would probably give them a nervous breakdown.
