@MrNiceDude89 Thanks! This was a student film done in '94 which had only been seen by a few handfuls of people before I put it on YouTube. So I'm loving it's second life here and the fact that over 25,000 people have watched it now.
@fallingdownhouse Little bit of both. If there was a part that wasn't moving in would draw it once and keep it there for all of the frames. I'd everything is moving then it's all individually drawn and shot for 2 frames...so that 12 drawings per second.
@disneyfashionlover1 It's hand drawn on Paper and then shot with a light behind the paper so you can see the different levels beneath. If I were doing the same thing again today I would composite in After Effects but I did this at school in the days before digital.
Haha i know I have a lot of questions but thank you so much you are the only one that ever answers me. Is there a way I could see the portfolio you submitted to get accepted to calarts? That would help alot. Thanks
I actually didn't have a portfolio. I went to CalArts and met with the counselor and found out what they were looking for and the I spent the next year living off cans of tuna fish and living in a one car garage filling sketchbooks with everything they counselor told me they were looking for. I think it was the combination of the sketchbooks and the story.
hey do you know any other colleges that specialize in animation and arts besides calarts? because when I graduate high school I want to have a choice in the colleges. I know theres a crapload in New Mexico but theres probably more in California haha. But I love animations done in pencil! Like the old old storyboards done in the 80's and 90's
I liked it a lot. It was hard to get accepted. I tried to go straight after High School but couldn't get in so I took nothing but art classes for the next year and filled up a few sketchbooks with the stuff they told me to draw and was able to get in the next year. If you want to go you should definitely try to meet with a counselor and talk to them about what you need to work on to get accepted.
Thanks. There's something special about animation done on paper that's shot from above with light from behind. Gives it that graininess of really old film. Pencil test animation is some of my favorite.
Thanks! This was a Semesters worth of work. I wonder what I could do now if I have nothing but one short to do for that length of time. Hopefully I'll get to find out sooner rather than later.
Thanks. This was 16 years ago now. Pretty soon and this short will be old enough to vote. Thanks though. Lot of blood sweat and tears went into the animation. I've thought about doing this one in color now but I think the time would be better spent just doing new stuff.
Lol really? XD But why'd I get 2 thumbs down? o.o I like the video, I wasn't dissing it. Mr. Kearsley has talent. I want to animate like this someday.
This was a semester long project my third year at CalArts. I've thought about finishing this off now but then I'd rather just do a new film than rework something from 14 years ago.
thanks...this was from '94 and feels like a million years ago. My friends at school all did the voices and it was recorded in one of the Dorms at CalArts which have concrete walls...which is why the sound is so bad. The Captain was done by a friend that had a really bad could at the time and was losing his voice. Made for the perfect salty sea captain.
That was brilliant!
:D

How did you do this? did you individually draw each frame or just one part and then layer it all together?

If you get accepted into experimental animation can you switch to character animation and vice versa?
VerseJer333 2 years ago
classic and amazing. looks like it was made in the 30s or 40s but still has that awesomeness to it
