Way too fast a tempo for this song which Tillbrook finally gets to sing lead on, though it's 'owned' by Paul Carrack. It sounds like a 45rpm being played at 78rpm speed!!
Brings back a few memories of seeing Squeeze live many, many times......at places like the Shepherds Bush Empire and Glenn and Chris were/are amazing live performers.........YouTube clips don't project their brilliance.
This clip looks to be from around 1989, I remember seeing a show they recorded at Newcastle on VH1 or something and the set and clothes bring back flashes of that.....wow 21 years ago...
i always liked the origional ...wasn't a die hard fan or nothing but it was cool the way the vocals were shared on the origional. These other versions are good...change is good ,can u imagine playing the same song for 20 or 30 yearts without experimenting...its frickin boring...i like the change, shows music versatality.
yes it's fast...but as a musician i realize how easy it is to rush stuff...and it sounds great!...besides realize they were playing to a huge crowd who needed to get moving....so sometimes upping the tempo helps...i'll say this if they ever need a backup keyboard player i'm down cause i do a great solo piano version of this tune....great song....
This isn't the best version, but I hold the unpopular opinion that Glenn totally rocks this song. Have done so since I first saw them live and he tore this song up. He totally changed me into a fan of his version of the song. Check it out on the live CD "Around and About" for a better version.
Paul also sang lead on "Loving You Tonight" from the album "Some Fantastic Place". It was released as a single here in the UK but I'm not sure whether it was in the US.
Oh, I should have dated that with "up to Frank" which I have all on LP,(except Frank-my first Squeeze release I purchased on CD on the release date) many on cassettee and a few on CD. My Squeeze knowledge after Frank came out is in need of refreshing. Thanks.
No fair comparing to the original, which actually has Tilbrook, Carrack, Difford AND Elvis Costello (briefly) on the vocals. Plus the video with the very sexy London girls. Yet, easily, a top 10 song from the 80s for me, on a list that includes bands like Joy Division, the Smiths, New Order and yes, Crowded House.
fasteez - I agree. Great song performed well - but too fast. It would have much more "soul" sung about 1/3 slower. Squeeze are still absolutely brilliant though. Chrs for posting.
Yes. Elvis had a big influence on the East Side Story album. It was his suggestion that Paul should take lead vocal which gave this song a different feel to the original take.
This one is done by original lead singer, Glenn Tilbrook. The original "Tempted" was sung by Paul Carrack (later was keyboards and singer for Mike and the Mechanics. Search for it here and you'll find the Paul C. version.
Thanks Crazy. I think you misunderstood my description. I know this is Glenn taking the lead and that Paul sang the original. What I was trying to say that both do a great job. Glenn has done some fantastic versions of this (I don't think this is his best, though), especially when he sings accompanied only by the piano. I don't know if you've heard the original "original" version recorded by Glenn (it appears on the Excess Moderation CD), it was very different from Paul's interpretation.
Thanks, I'll have to check it out. But you're absolutely right, Glenn does tend to rush it a little much. In fact, I saw a recent video of "Black Coffee In Bed" and they rushed it as well. I suppose that they don't understand that we, their patrons, would want to hear the songs "that made them famous", not some hurried attempt.
Yes, they went all around the houses with Black Coffee. I quite like hearing different versions or interpretations of their songs. OK, they don't always work but it can breathe new life into them.
My one worry about the Black Coffee promo video was the amount of make-up they wore. Very early eighties!
Love Elvis Costello & Todd Rungren for all of their behind the scenes influence!

No way.
Up tempo is perfectly fine as long as you're not RACING away.
People are too scared of playing *at tempo* these days because they think slower tempos impart "feel"
Thats bullshit .
If you cant play at an uptempo time and maintain feel then you need to need to keep working at your craft.
Simple as that .

This is the most gay-i-fied version of this song I've ever heard. Without Paul Carrack, and a solid pocket drum groove, it turns gay really fast!
