you dont need heaps, but definitely need some... once you put a bit of rosin on you can feel how grippy it is just by running your finger along the bow... once your finger sticks to it, thats all it needs to make the cymbal vibrate....
the cymbal actually belonged to a friend of mine & i'm not sure how he first broke it.... but since doing this recording i have since stalked trademe (local ebay) and now have about dozen 'broken' cymbals, all bought very cheaply but some great sounds to be had!!!
Damn, doesn't that ruin the bow?

Amazing sound!!! Did you experiment with both the violin and bass bows? Which one works better?

Question: Do you really have to rosin the bow up to get the effects - I mean like rub on a ton of the stuff?

@subbasshead Thanks. Without the mics - just acoustically, is there any really substantial volume?
Also, the cracked cymbal, is that something that happened by accident or do you deliberately experiment with things like that?
I really like your concept.

It looks like you're using a bass bow..could that also be a reason as to why you're getting such a low end sound?
MountainJammn 3 years ago
He's getting the low end from the contact mic.

no, it doesnt have to be cracked - you can bow a normal cymbal... but i havent managed to get such low end sounds by bowing a normal cymbal...
& yes i has musics :)
