  • SO i used newspaper and a ruler... did not work... then realized it was metal ... ouch.. i am suing

  • @TheDor311 stupid americunt

  • @stylizhmathias wow man it was a joke. i didnt even try it....

  • Note to anybody trying, don't do it if you have an iron ruler.

  • that was from the suction. Not the air resistance.

  • when we were shown this we were told thatht its becuase your not just trying to lift the news paper your also trying to lift the air above it which makes it have more weight on it when its hit!

  • Its more the weight than the strength of the air.

  • LOL.looks like the blurred comes from dirty spot on cameras lenses is dirty/smudged

  • Do NOT try this at home...very dangerous.

  • lol I love how he says "Have fun" at the end. He KNOWS we gonna try it xD

  • YOUTUBE SHIRT

  • It's because the air resistance caused by the larg surface area of the newspaper is strong enough to hold it for a split second

  • is the guy ok?

  • youtube shirt lol

  • Tried with special certificate :DD

    *RRRRIIIIIPPPPP*

    D:

  • Thanks .... I lost my left eye .

  • makes sure all air is out

  • Thumbs up if you saw this experiment on Mr. Wizard's World on Nickelodeon back in the mid-1980's lol. I doubt I get many...

  • With the ruler alone, while it is set down and you hit it, air has a bit of time to get under it. preventing it from breaking. With the news paper, it create an even better air-tight seal, and the ruler doesn't receive enough time to get air under it, so it breaks.

Atleast, this is what I believe happens

  • Air pressure is usually at a constant of 3 lbs, when he did it with no newspaper, the ruler was aerodynamic enough to break it, that and there isn't enough surface area to hold it down with air alone. However, when the ruler had a newspaper on top of it, air pressure only affects the top part of the paper, the bottom half was nothing but a vacuum creating a suction effect. Holding the ruler down with about 3 lbs which if hit hard enough is good enough to break the ruler.

  • It is possible... You CAN hack life

  • Old

  • done this many many times in grade school as part of curriculum

  • HOW.

  • This guy hack life....

  • I believe the REAL question here is...did you finish the puzzle on the newspaper?

  • Double stick tape on ruler. When he puts paper on top of the ruler he is pushing the double stick tape down. So that when you slam the ruler it is stuck to the side and the end breaks off. Good trick though

  • @CardBicycleMan It's not a trick, it's science :) the explanation is in the video info

  • @CardBicycleMan Bro, this actually works -______- It's an old trick, and you, my friend, is behind the times.

  • @CardBicycleMan dude its no trick dont out anything on that ruler and put newpaper on top of it and you can break it.... there is no tape involved in this, dont believe me? try it and it is an old trick

  • So who is going to pay for all my broken rulers now?

  • Mommy?Did my ruler go to heaven? By Li'l Cutie ( from a diary of a wimpy kid)

  • Had a paper ruler ... Didn't work ...

  • Bu- bu- but h-h-h-how? What?

  • O_O 1 hit u hacker im reporting

  • God hasn't given Life an update yet or any patches.

  • I could have used tht for geomatry class u ashole

  • Actually, what's happening is that when the ruler is hit, it pushes the paper and the paper pushes the... oh wait. never mind.

  • I did this in 3rd grade! brings back memories.

  • Man, I was looking for the answers to that crossword puzzle for a long time now...

  • What if i put my finger there

  • Tries it my-self; WHOA

Takes another ruler to school and shows friends; WHOA

Takes another ruler to club and shows it to club-mates; AWESOME

Takes another ruler to talent show and performs; -huge applause-

Takes another ruler to house and shows parents; "So THAT's where all the rulers went. Go to your room!!! >:O"

  • @ultislasher1 hahahahaha XD

  • hes a genius and a ninja! great combo

  • Are you have a ruler factory?

  • WITCHCRAFT!

  • BURN THE WITCH

  • Omg! tried it and it works!

  • poor ruler

  • he who has girly hands will brake rulers with the force of air

he who has big strong hands will brake rulers with the force equal to the callories in a large steak .

  • IMPOSSABLE D:

  • When he stop making more videos... We shall know he got banned by god.

  • how did you manage the slow-motion?

I mean how was it made?

  • cmon. the paper creates resistance against the air on top of it + some vacuum underneath it, where the ruler is.

  • @daCorasla looks like you were paying attention in science class

  • all he is doing is creating a vacume around the ruler. its like 6th grade science

  • he ha

  • RIP ruler

  • @SuperBmxbadass It's just blurred so that you can't see what's written on the newspaper...

  • @atz123ify im guessing 395 people

  • Dude can you guys not see the blurry spot in the middle of the ruler when its on the table??? its probaly edited

  • @SuperBmxbadass He did not want us to see the content inside the newspaper. ;)

  • @SuperBmxbadass it cause he doesnt want u to see what it says

  • @xxxmonstar Ok why wouldnt he want for you to see what it says its a newspaper, also at 45 seconds half the paper isnt even blurred only the part where its going to brake

  • @SuperBmxbadass u have never watched tv have u, like on reality shows they blur out words on t-shirts

  • i wonder how many people used the ruler with a metal edge and totally failed at this?

  • does it have to be news paper or can it be normal paper???

  • flagged for ruler abuse

  • Power of newspaper**

  • Poor ruler D:

  • You sir, owe me one ruler.

  • [Insert scientific fact here]

  • @ruberome it is basic science just go try it out.

  • Faaaaaaaaaaake!!!!!

  • @ruberome Nope. 100% real. Try it.

  • This makes me want to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. The cartoon though, Lol.

  • im pretty sure this is bernoulli's principle at work (i think)

  • i did this in school with a pencil and i broke like 3 of them then i took five pencils on the bus with me and broke them (now i am definitely not the cool kid on there though not a nerd either) and i broke them by holding the 2 ends and thrusting it toward my upper leg and every one wanted me to keep doing it so i did and i was the cool kid that day just because of that and i am not the cool kid i just am on random days i am a little bit nerdy though i like it :)

  • @agent2406 ...What are you talking about. That was the most horribly worded comment I have ever read.

  • WARNING: do not attempt this with any sort of metal ruler!

  • I tried this a billion times and then was like, OH WAIT THE RULER HAS A METAL THINGY IN IT, i removed then worked..........

  • ? wow

  • if you hit the table your arms feel like the rubbler

  • That was amazing unless my eyes are cheated by some spell.!!

  • Air my ass. This guy is shaolin.

  • What Black magic is this!?!

  • If you push out all the air under the peice of paper it makes a suction making the newpaper heavier? Thats why you where sensualy touching the newspaper like that :)..If yes ..well you have a excuse XD

  • I know how and why the ruler snapped because of the air .... ...... newspapers are wide and thin and more difficult to travel horizontally through the air ... rule is broken by the pressure ... easy ... :)

  • @nlukica Something like that.

  • Ohhai,

    welkum to mythbusters.

  • why...why did this not surprise me

  • what if i have metal ruler? how is that going to end?

  • @Mavraish you'll have to glue the newspaper to the table this time, and use a hammer instead of a hand

  • @Mavraish bent

  • how is you gonna measure tings now

  • well i broke my only ruler

  • howcome the news is blured out?

  • can it work with paper towels?

  • WTF...I broke my ruler and there are no more ruler at home

  • Lol Youtube shirt :D

  • can you say bar bet?

  • DAFUQISDAT

  • I tried once and broke my hand instead 'cause i hit the table >_<

  • heavy ass newpaper

  • Thumbs Up for all to see!

This trick uses atmospheric pressure. Right now, theres about tons of weight pushing on all sides of your body, but because its balanced on all sides, you dont feel it.

With the Newspaper, he made it so that so that the air underneath the newspaper would disperse. Because there was no air on the bottom, tons of pressure was put on the newspapers top because of the atmospheric pressure, this made it sturdy enough to be able to withstand the force and make the ruler break

  • @FullxKoReAn Less to do with atmospheric pressure, although that is what is pushing down on the paper over the ruler because of the increased surface area. It has more to do with what is called Impulse. The ruler can't bounce up quickly enough with the newspaper on top of it so the force must go somewhere, which is why it breaks. He explain it in the description as well.

  • @FullxKoReAn to be exact it is probably about 32 pounds of weight because that is the force of gravity.

  • message from Michael Jackson: WOW!

Hey... why michael Jackson? Thumbs up if you think this comment is stupid

  • Comment removed

  • God..

What the hell do they put in those news papers?

Put a ruler in the water, and it's creatures in the depths will eat it, Ruler is broke.

Put a ruler in an open fire. Ruler is no more I.E. Broke.

  • @Smoothiecom fire burns it, earth and water could be used to crush it.. :3

  • @Smoothiecom i do think in fact fire can break a ruler it'll just burn it derp o.o

  • @Blukko Please stop! You are boring!

  • YouTube 0:56

  • Air is super heavy when you have miles of it stacked on top of itself.

  • @rappk LoL... really? put it on a scale... how much does it weigh? LMFAO

  • you just wasting time and ruler

  • dude.. u owe me .47 cents for that ruler -.-

  • This guy is Jesus. no exceptions

  • i learned this in my chemistry class (:

  • Its simple the news paper absorbed the shock from the blast resulting in a forced crack in the ruler.

  • didnt work here.i think i need the same newspaper page.

  • @blegukutuk Ok, to perform this trick, MAKE SURE THAT THE SIDES OF YOUR NEWSPAPER IS ALL THE WAY DOWN! You want it so that no air can get underneath the newspaper. Try tape, dont press it down completely but lightly on its sides or corner and then it will work.

  • i tried it with a piece of paper and a popsicle sick and it hurt

  • Thumbs up if you really want to try this. But you don't want to break a ruler.

  • omfg i tried it and it worked, HOLY SHIT

  • thumbs up if u saw "YOUTUBE" tshirt at 0:58!

  • the paper flew up and cut my eye/:

  • 0:12

    "Shit."

    ??

  • well after words you realize he had the right angle after all lol

  • Guys, don't ruin it for other people with your smart answers how he did it, just enjoy and dont ruin other people fun by saying wut the fuk!

  • I did this with my teacher's ruler. Got suspended. Totally worth it ;)

  • @marcelluiz96 The only thing you did was write a lie on youtube.

  • @Baychimo what i did was tell a joke. It's stupid to say: JK FELLAS, i guess only retards need to say that.

  • @marcelluiz96 There's a difference in telling a joke and making up a story. As a made up story your 'joke' lost it's fun factor. I know a three year old (or someone with a mind of a three year old) would laugh at your 'joke', but I doubt anyone that young would read through the comments. If I watched a vid of a cake and wrote a comment 'I fell on a cake yesterday' it could be funny if I actually had done it. It wouldn't be a joke but a funny story. I hope you get what I'm saying.

  • @Baychimo Yes, i get what you're saying, but i guess you can understand that in an digital enviroment, saying here's a joke: So! yesterday i was there and got suspended isn't a joke. The fun factor is the fact that it's not ficticional, but real, and you can imagine that "happening".

  • OMG... What is special ? It is all normal

  • It's the air pressure. He squeezed out all the air underneath the newspaper, so the pressure on top is much higher than below, therefore, the air "holds" the paper down.

  • why give air credits if the newspaper did it?

  • EAsy! Cold table top and heated air above ( heated by the lamp) creates suction effect! Duh!

  • Steve spangler did that :D

  • Did anyone see that subliminal message at 0:58?

  • @vipsta11 No... I saw a hand break a ruler though..

  • Meh.

  • this doesnt seem that impressive.........

  • And this is called vacuum.

  • @PriLScrMaEaM it is calld physics ;)

  • that newspaper is made of metal?

  • i wanted to read the news :(

  • i have a theory on how this is work! *look at description* well it say at the description!

  • well, i have a hypothesis (big word, huh?) i think its just a split second in time where the vacuum of the newspaper holds the ruler onto the table. thats why he made sure the paper was firmly flattened onto the table.

  • Air ForTheWinD ?

  • Thumbs up if you were like " What that aint gonna wor... What The Fuck!"

  • @benja1235 ppl are getting more stupid every day.........

  • i love how dramatic breaking a ruler can seem
