Obviously we all have our opinions as to who the best is, and you know, all these different opinions get tiring. That's why Chris Thile came along: we don't have to worry about who the best is anymore! He can out-bluegrass Ricky Skaggs and then turn around and write a Bach-like composition. The rest of you are the crotchety people who wrote these folks off in the first place place. Times have changed. Get over it.
Woo hoo! Love that 3 part harmony with Tim, Sara, and Chris. There's another video of this song with Tim playing with Sarah Jarosz and the Deadly Gentlemen (full version) at the 2008 Rice Festival in Fischer,TX. You can find it here: watch?v=DwivL5pO5Sw
You may not like nickel creek, but it's not because they suck (grammies), and if you think "especially thile", you've obviously not listened to Punch Brothers... which proves once and for all (without the mandolin picking) that Thile is a brilliant composer and musician.
@CGiordano464 I agree, but it may not have been in bluegrass/newgrass. Maybe jazz or classical (which he plays equally well). He would excel in any genre, but the revolutionaries like Monroe through Hot Rize set the stage for his talent to blossom.
oh no you didn't just say that..... thile is brilliant..yes in a beethoven kind of way...but using bizarre chords and time signatures is only half of music...like ralkph stanley says, "you've got to be a man with it" and thile is an uppity disrespectful, acoustic musician who laughs in the face of the genre that appreciates him....its despicable, we should be able to appreciate the likes of him, cherryholmes and monroe and the boys...not only one like he wants...
that's a pretty silly thing to say. i think if you knew chris, you'd find him to be anything but uppity and disrespectful. and i bet your beloved ralph would tell you the same thing.
Thile is more than respectful of the genre and of the artists who came before him. He just wants to try new things. And given the incredible depth of his talent as a player and a composer, it's best that you take him seriously.

But of course, Thile would not exist with Timmy O, Strength in Numbers, Newgrass, Hot Rize, etc... not denying that he stands on their shoulders.

@hyaenidae i wouldnt say that. that kids got more talent then just about any other player out ther. he would of made his way to top no matter what.

@kamren14 You clearly have never listened to his interviews, heard him talk to other musicians, watched him interact with the genre. You're confused.

I would consider Bill Monroe or Sam Bush th. Thile hasn't been around long enough.
tgmod 3 years ago
@tgmod all repect to Bush and Monroe but even sam has admited that thile is capible of things he is not. thile s the supreme mandolin player..
