What you expel from your lungs is mostly CO2, right? Don't worry about the plant life that thrives on CO2, or the fact that that charming graph that AlGore showed in his fictional film actually SHOWS that CO2 rise FOLLOWED temp rise... ever heard of cause and effect? Now, that post may trick you into thinking I'm against geotherm, solar and wind. I'm not. Not as long as they're more efficient, which geotherm already is. I just don't believe the citizenry should be stampeded into massive carbon taxes, mandatory massive shifts in industry and gub'ment control of every part of our lives. Each person should be free to choose the right tech for him-or her-self. I would choose this for my home, but not because you're spewing CO2. Get a grip, get some perspective
Good video, but the Marxist global warming comments were disappointing. It takes no courage to go along with the mind numbed crowds on global warming. Rather, it takes courage to have the balls to point out that radical environmentalism is really just a ploy to lower our standard of living by instilling guilt.
On a less serious note, I just got geothermal installed last week at my house. Anyone on propane heat should cost it out, especially if you have well water. Open loop saves 50%.
Natural gas...get a weil mcclain ultra boiler that is 92% efficient right out of the box and up to 98% efficient with rqadiant heat, oil is very fast heat, but expensive, and on its way out...rumor has it they can be tuned to almost 100% effiecent...99.4 was the highest ive heard with some funtions tweeking...really good boiler and its made from aluminum, buderous oil bloilers are as high as 98% efficent...insulate, rgulate, calculate..spend now not later. these systems pay for themselves.
Now if the billions which have gone to the banks or on Iraq were invested in a government drive for geothermal, solar and other technologies...Americans would have more of there own money to spend on what they really wanted and their dependence on Arab oil would be reduced massively. Now, wouldn't that be a good use of tax payers' money? Of course, the rich oil men would have to work for a living for a change.... but hey, hard work never killed anyone.
This is great technology. I too have a problem equating installing one of these systems with combatting global warming. Really? Credible scientists are all over the place on warming and what may or may not cause it. It seems like if you question warming and that man causes it, you're a neanderthal. That's just ridiculous. It seems more ridiculous to blindly believe whatever Al Gore says. I would love to have one of these systems though. Save money and conserve? Wow.
Even Pres Bush now acknowledges, as does VP Cheney, that global warming is a threat to all of us. Being concerned, and finding smart ways to act, especially ways that help protect our nation security, is simply patriotic.
It does seem to be fact that our temperature has risen a little over a degree in the last 100 years, but there is absolutely no consensus on what may be causing it. I'm all about conserving and the sooner we can get off foreign oil the better, but it just seems like everyone is ready to believe all this "man-made global warming" propaganda before it's proven. As previously stated, and as your response confirms, if you question it, you are a neanderthal and I guess unpatriotic. Ridiculous.
What scares me more then global warming these days is the brain dead people who think its in question. Hey SteelerJunkie, No credible scientist are suggesting that global warming in not real or isn't caused by humans. Other than FOX news and hacks hired by oil companies to confuse the weak.....

Had it not WaterFurnace been so ridiculously overpriced all would use it. WaterFurnace hardware is 3 or more times more expensive than comparable capacity heat pump and it should cost about the same. The only cost differential should be the earthworks. To do vertical at $2,000/100 ft(1Ton)costs about 3 times more than the ordinary heat-pump. There is no savings if WaterFurnace charges $23,000 for 3.5 Ton heat pump. A normal 3.5T unit costs $2,800; a high end is $7,500 installed.

Thank you so much for this video. My husband and I are going to build a new home in a few years and we are talking about geothermal. My husband wanted to use a large outside woodburner. I don't think so. The woodburner would cost about $10,000 plus the price of the wood. Plus it would be messy.
Thanks for helping us get an idea on the pricing! One question - would it be possible to split the costs (since I'm guessing much of it comes from the digging) to share a trench with a neighbor? By buddying up - wouldn't that make it easier for all of us to jump on this?
Good question. I imagine the question is how to write a contract with your neighbor on shared costs for installation and maintenance. I will await word from those in the business about how feasible this might be in certain places. I could see contractors wanting to use this option when they put in a new subdivision.
Thanks for getting back! Today I found a place that sells Do It Yourself kits for setting up geothermal air & am waiting to hear from their reps. Seems that if the digging cost could be shared, & if folks could install this themselves, and take any tax credits - that it might bring the costs down enough to make it a serious option for the majority of us. If I find out more, I'd be happy to give you an update here. Thanks for your hard work to bring this fun flick to us!

Not to be a fly in the ointment, but the guy who said normal air conditioners don't work in the winter has it backwards. Air conditioners work best in the winter - when you don't need them. Same with Heat Pumps - pump heat best in the summer when you don't need heat pumps. Heat Pumps coils can freeze in the winter, but waterfurnaces won't.

CO2 is a result of global warming, not the cause of it. Get your facts strait. Why would you trust what Al Gore says, he's a politician =P his facts are scewed. Watch "The Great Global Warming Swindel" (i think thats what its called) BTW I'm not bashing geothermal waterfurnaces. I think its a great way to loosen our energy needs so we don't have to worry about controling the middle east, which means no more wars or destroying and rebuilding countries =)
Most scientists who aren't trying to scare you into supporting their vested interests will tell you that the Earth is reaching record cools in other areas. As a matter of fact, in the 80's there was a similar scare called "global cooling." Guess that didn't turn out so well, huh?
But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter if it's warming or cooling because the truth is that these things are cyclical.
The Earth's revolution around the sun currently places us furthest away from the sun in the summer, and closest to the sun during the winter. This has not always been the case. Scientists have mathematically calculated that around the time of the Ice Age, the Earth was actually furthest away from the sun during the winter, multiplying the effects of our winter. This may have even been extreme enough to contribute to the harshness of the Ice age.
By the end of the cycle, we will be experiencing record cools, and then some other group of hippies will tell us that it's all our fault for putting too much CO2 in the atmosphere.
...Also, is it weird to anybody else that Mars, (atmosphere is primarily CO2) is so much colder than Earth, despite the fact that it's actually closer to the sun?
You're wrong, but assuming you're right then so what? Geothermal is cheaper. Besides solar thermal, it's the only distributable renewable energy source that actually saves you money without requiring rebates (unlike solar PV).
You want to throw your money away on noisy inefficient standard HVAC then help yourself, but you'd just throwing your life's savings away ... he he he, fitting justice for a willfully ignorant traditionalist.
He he he ... you said "activist-terrorists". You mean like the author of this YouTube video. Yeah. They're terrorist. They encourage you to buy something that will pay you a handsome return within 10 years (up to $1500/yr with today's oil prices).
Yeah, that's terrorism. *smirk*
I don't need to call you names ... your posts should be embarrasing enough for you.
Not everything that I've said directly applies to this video dude, obviously this video isn't trying to scare you with the prospect of poverty.
I'm talking about "global warming", you are speaking of money-saving. I'm all for saving money, and I have nothing against geothermal energy as I said above. However, people who push it based on the idea that it saves the world from "global warming" is BS.
It's people like you that do a great disservice to our fellow human being and earth. The position you are taking will be laughed at by your ancestors. Keep going, it's great humor to read your fiction.
My husband and I have already been seriously considering getting geothermal when we buy a house. We'd also like to get a wind generator for our electrical needs. I think this is great. Thanks for posting.
Tackling this myself would have made as much sense as doing my own appendectomy. I applaud you for tackling the challenge yourself, but the tweaking required to redo my current ductwork, the setup of the unit itself and the challenge in installing the pipes persuade me that this job was waaay more than I could handle and that leaving it to Gerry and the boys at S&J was among the smarter moves I made.
To those DIY'ers thinking they would like to do this.
I received the same $18,000 price from a geo installer
and realized this just would not make sense for me.
However, I did a lot of research and found that the cost was way inflated. The unit itself is cheaper than a very good air source heat pump. You should be able to get an exceptional 3 ton unit for around $4k.
The short of this is that my "difficult" installation should cost ~$9,000.
I am an A/C technician from Houston and wow, i have read about these types of systems but wow, i didn't know that they were half as complicated as they sound. they must be hard to service to those who aren't accustomed to the system.
It is possible to rationlise away anything and everything, including taking personal action about global warming - or even about global warming itself. Nike had the right answer - Just DO it!! Get off the couch, potatoes!! Take personal accountability and action. Wonderful, practical, informative video. Thank You!! :-)
This geothermal solution seems positive but does it just distract us from the real solution. Reducing the damage we do is good but is there enough time to take this approach. The question is "what is the most attractive way we can live currently available to us, that would make a plus rather than a minus to the environment? What aspects of this need improving? What needs designing? What lifestyle changes do we need to apply marketing skills to promote?
it is good to use that system but you need to stop worrying about co2 as it is a good plant food and only an effect of temp not a driver

Hopefully more people will be able to install these systems in the coming years as global climate change and fuel prices will become more and more real for even the biggest skeptic. ( I noticed there are one or two in this post that are still challenging global climate change. I think they are referred to as fossils)
again, great posting.

co2 is from the green plants in the evening -no sunlight
co2 is not a result of a planet increasing a degree in a hundred years
a little more co2 is a little more
to affect a 1/10th degree fluxuation in the Earth?
calculate how much horsepower that is vs the trapped energy of gasses added -
yeah we can clean up a little -- but lying to kids in forced school sessions is worse than silent response while others want to pray
O2 is a cosmic reaction, 2% from plants

CO2 is a result of global warming, not the cause of it. Get your facts strait. Why would you trust what Al Gore says, he's a politician =P his facts are scewed. Watch "The Great Global Warming Swindel" (i think thats what its called) BTW I'm not bashing geothermal waterfurnaces. I think its a great way to loosen our energy needs so we don't have to worry about controling the middle east, which means no more wars or destroying and rebuilding countries =)

Global warming is fake, btw. Really, there is no valid scientific evidence that supports the thought that the world is doing anything abnormal.
Also, the largest greenhouse gas in the Earth's Atmosphere is dihydrogen monoxide, and kills far more each year than your silly CO2.

There is a mountain of evidence! Look around.

Most scientists who aren't trying to scare you into supporting their vested interests will tell you that the Earth is reaching record cools in other areas. As a matter of fact, in the 80's there was a similar scare called "global cooling." Guess that didn't turn out so well, huh?
But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter if it's warming or cooling because the truth is that these things are cyclical.
draconic86 4 years ago
The Earth's revolution around the sun currently places us furthest away from the sun in the summer, and closest to the sun during the winter. This has not always been the case. Scientists have mathematically calculated that around the time of the Ice Age, the Earth was actually furthest away from the sun during the winter, multiplying the effects of our winter. This may have even been extreme enough to contribute to the harshness of the Ice age.
draconic86 4 years ago
By the end of the cycle, we will be experiencing record cools, and then some other group of hippies will tell us that it's all our fault for putting too much CO2 in the atmosphere.
...Also, is it weird to anybody else that Mars, (atmosphere is primarily CO2) is so much colder than Earth, despite the fact that it's actually closer to the sun?
Perhaps it is you who should look around?
draconic86 4 years ago
the THEORY of an ice age, not "the ice age" any more than the evidential "hit of a meteor shifting the planets axis and wobbling"
note too:
direct sunlight is in the summer, less direct in the winter-closer though it is

Geothermal is future wanker, your just a payed shill for an oil company.
Toshiba is one of the big maker of Geothermal turbines in the world so what is this shit dribbling out of your mouth of hippies, moron.
Geothermal power is big business, In US, NZ, Iceland.
Go back to play with your power ranger dolls :D

Look around compared to what ?
And who makes the starting date valid?
We know there's a shift , BUT IS IT CYCLIC?
IS IT WOBBLE IN THE AXIS-ANGLE?
IS IT FROM A METEOR STRIKE 5000 YEARS AGO?

>Global warming is fake, btw
You're wrong, but assuming you're right then so what? Geothermal is cheaper. Besides solar thermal, it's the only distributable renewable energy source that actually saves you money without requiring rebates (unlike solar PV).
You want to throw your money away on noisy inefficient standard HVAC then help yourself, but you'd just throwing your life's savings away ... he he he, fitting justice for a willfully ignorant traditionalist.

I have nothing against geothermal energy. Just the activist-terrorists, who use scare tactics to force their point of view on others.
draconic86 3 years ago
He he he ... you said "activist-terrorists". You mean like the author of this YouTube video. Yeah. They're terrorist. They encourage you to buy something that will pay you a handsome return within 10 years (up to $1500/yr with today's oil prices).
Yeah, that's terrorism. *smirk*
I don't need to call you names ... your posts should be embarrasing enough for you.
davea0511 3 years ago

"Freon" is Duponts brand name for some of its refrigerants. Using the term "Freon" is not only incorrect but very unprofessional.

UncleCaptainMidnight 5 years ago
