  • Sorry to say that the refs son goes to Brophy College Prepatory and his daughter goes to Xavier College Prepatory which are Saint Mary's rival high schools so we can all just bequiet about it now.

  • yeah. i totally agree.

    seriously SM sucks!!!!!!!!

they're just using any call they can to try and win a game.

but guess what sm BCP rocks!!!

you guys may think that you guys are better than us and say 9 to 2 but guess what:

    "OLD AND RUSTY!!!!"

haha go suck some balls knights...damnnnn straighttt

  • I was at this game, and yes it was a HORRIBLE CALL that cost us from getting the chance to our school's first state title in basketball, a dream that every player on that team had.

The ref had made a similar bogus call the night before in the girl's basketball semi-final game. Ref's like this should not be allowed to get away with things like this; shattering players dreams by screwing them over...

  • Wow, what a bunch of crap. That was worse than a bad call. That was a situation where, even if the kid had thrown the ball, a technical should not have been called. Clearly the boy did not throw the ball. That ref should not be allowed to forget that call ever. Bad, bad, bad. Shame on him. Sorry to the Hamilton kids.

  • Hamilton quit crying it doesnt matter if a tech was called your team still gave up the three point shot after the call was made. QUIT BITCHING and accept losing like everyone else does.

  • thankyou... isn't dominating football for the past 5 years enough?? haha stop cryin

  • I was interested in seeing this video since reading about how this game ended.

From an outsider's perspective, it was a terrible call for that situation. There was nothing on this video that was worthy of a technical foul. I don't know what the ref thought he saw, but his eyes deceived him, that much is clear to any logical person.

The kid didn't throw the ball, didn't take a swing and no one claims he cursed.

It's too bad the game ended this way.

  • "Lighten up." bschrank, imagine its the last game of your basketball career, you may never play in a league again. And after making all the way to the semi-finals. it looks like you're about to win, and the ref calls a bs technical foul that leads to two points that basically decided the game. A lot of those guys were seniors who've been playing this since they were little kids possibly dreaming of a state championship and when its right in their grasp the ref takes it away just like that.

  • By the way, the ref told all the coaches that the technical was because he threw the ball at the st. mary's player. You aren't going to get every piece of information from the newspapers, and even what you find there is not that reliable. If you want the truth, go to the source. Well Ferian, you may not want to because in your case, the truth hurts.

  • Ferian, you are the only person defending this. I also find it funny that you call people names as you denounce the exact same act. There is no fix, but you cannot honestly say that it was the right call. In fact, it has been revealed that the referee in question did see the video, and has reached out to the Hamilton player (#12) to apologize. For that I believe the ref should be commended. You cant guarantee a perfectly called game, however you must keep the integrity and honesty of the game.

  • There's no ironclad quote from the REF who T'd Hambsch up. There are assumptions; and the immature, whining response of people who can't ACCEPT a LOSS. Since Hamilton has over 3000 enrollment, perhaps the Hamilton Forensic Video Team can break down the entire film and list how many fouls were called on EACH team. As the rest of humanity has moved past this (get some help) name-calling is the last sophomoric response of the powerless. Why wasn't your opponent "fixed" all the way to a title?

  • exactly, without being told what happens in this video you would never guess a technical was called

  • Where is the technical foul. I don't see anything.

  • Yes, the offical made a bad call. Lighten up. They're human, too. They make mistakes at their job calling a game like any of you make mistakes at your job ocassionally. Players miss shots, miss assignments on defense, get out of position, etc. Why do we expect or demand that officials be perfect? We tend to forgive the many mistakes made during a game by players and coaches, but not officals. I agree he messed up on the call, but calling it a fix or demanding his name is going overboard.

  • you didn't find out the outcome of the game though. at that time hamilton was up by 4 points. the technical foul gave them 2 freethrows, which they made and gave them the ball back. they let clock go down and hit a 3 pointer to win the game by 1 point. This was the semifinals of the STATE Tournement. there was no reason why that ref should of called that.

  • You have no idea what you are talking about. That was a horrible call by that ref that cost those kids the game. That ref should not have made that call, even if the kid had thrown the ball. Clearly he did not throw the ball. That is really sad. I feel badly for those Hamilton kids. (FYI, I am German. Juat came across the video by accident.)

  • at 16 sec. you can see the hamilton player sort of swing at the st. mary's player with his left hand. Maybe thats why they called the "phantom" technical??? last time i checked throwing punches was grounds for a technical.

  • Where is this ref that called the Technical at? Does he not have anything to say. Why not post his name? All the papers have posted the players' names. Why not mention the only adult involved in the situation.

  • I was at the game, sitting 5 rows straight up from where the play in question happened. It was the most ridiculous call I have ever seen in basketball at any level. This is a travesty to have happen at the High School level. These are young kids that were playing their hearts out, and to have a referee take the game into his hands is outrageous. What isn't mentioned is the second referee didnt agree with the ref that called the T, but was overruled.

  • The state of Arizona has some horrible refs. How are they going to let two guys like that ref a state semi-final game. I guess if your brother is a ref like the St Mary's coach then you will get a few more calls as opposed to the right calls. I can't believe the ref would mess up a great game with a horrible call like that. Let the kids decide the game not the ref.

  • Watch closely and you will see the St. Mary's player reach in and grab the Hamilton player with the ball just after the whistle blew. In the process of grabbing for the ball, he grabs the Hamilton player. The Hamilton player responds in a way that could be interpreted as retaliatory. That said, it should have been a no-call. I have no dog in this fight; I'm just an AZ sports fan without any kids at either school.

  • If any foul should have been called, it ought to have been on St. Mary's for giving Hamilton's player a shove with his shoulder. I've watched St. Mary's play, and we all know they play dirty because we've seen it, and St. Mary's gets away with most of it. It should have been Hamilton vs. Desert Vista in the finals. At least the best team won, not the team that cheated to get to the finals.

  • Why not show St. Mary's next 5-points? Issue isn't that the ball wasn't thrown; a TF WAS called. Hambsch lost his poise; probably cursed. They will T you up for that too. Incorrect assumptions in the press as to reasons why doesn't make it so. Hamilton parent claimed AIA acknowledged the wrong call - and the AIA rep responded, "I would never agree to that, I'm smarter than that. I'm not agreeing. I agreed to listen to them. We did that." No sniveling, no whining.
