  • Is it possible to use delay and looper at the same time in DL 4?

  • You have good clean guitar toe, if you get swelling it's probably stepping on those metal buttons that causes it.

  • @jamiepiemusic tubescreamer has a few really good tutorials on the swells. the idea is actually pretty simple. just browse around the vids until you find it. (sorry, I don't know the link off hand)

  • *sure

  • @kruges41 no, sadly you can't. I'm there's a mod someone could figure out that would allow you to do that, but honestly I've never found it to be a hindrance. one thing that would work though, is running another dl4 in front of the looping one and using the presets in the loop. because just one is never enough. ;)

  • How do you create the ambient swell sounds? What pedals do you have on ?

  • 2:17 - very Stars of the Lid-y.. Beautiful..

  • been trying for days.. cant get it right :(

  • i know this video is outdated, but i feel like the empty loop thing you did here is unnecessary because you can achieve the same thing by pressing "A" instead of "B" at the end of your desired loop phrase length. after hitting record (or A), you can start playing and once you press "A" again, it'll start the loop over but the trail of what you were playing (as long as you let it trail) will be present in the loop and make it sound smooth.

  • Brilliant!!! Thanks for the tip.

  • What pedals were you using to make that sound?

  • i love your sound man its awesome

  • Wait! You can use the delay on the dl4 while your looping?! please explain how. thanks

  • @abasolo119 the dl4 still has the delay effect available while looping. you can turn it up or down in the mix and change the tempo still. (tap-tempo isn't available while in loop mode though, you need to just change it with the speed knob) but yeah, the delay is still functional. (you also don't have all the other delay effects while in loop mode. i think it's only the analog delay) =]

  • @jcnorthrup so you cant have one of the other delay effects set as a preset and then work those through the looper?

  • what chords did you use for this?

  • Very nice, cheers for the tip...

  • You have the looper in the end of all the pedals so it records what you play WITH effects? Thanks

  • Good tip. It's great to see players sharing knowledge / ideas. Nice tones... shade of Terje Rypdal.

  • I know you've probably been asked this many times, but what effects, specifically, are you using to make those swells?

  • How do u loop while in that auto volume mode? Is that how u do the swells an ambient sounds? Please help?

  • @Konradmessyburger he probably uses another pedal or stompbox to get the big swelling sound...

  • Love your videos! And your gear!!! :D

  • thanks for this vid ...and graet info too =) sounds great

  • you're awesome man. out of curiosity, what are your influences? those swells are incredible. also, ever check out the line 6 M9?

  • Isn't it easier to just press record, start playing, and then immediately press overdub at any random moment (depending on how long you want the loop to be)?

  • what was that initial filter you had on? very cool relaxing sound. kinda mutes out the string dynamics and makes all 6 strings harmonized. very cool

  • Reverb comes after the dl4 in this video correct?

  • Hi that was great and really helpfull.I have just bought one of these and not quit sure how to use all the button, the manual doesnt help much.

Do you know how to save presets,if so can you please help.

  • @maryannemay press and hold a preset button to save the current sound to that button. I'm sure this is in the manual though...

  • @DiabolicBadger Thank you very much for your help. That was very nice of you.

    Regards Mary.

  • i still am not quite clear on the process you are doing: wont the recording stop as soon as that span of 'silence' is over?

  • @Otherthings100 Initially, yes. Once you hit the overdub button after you've recorded the silence, it will just start layering.

  • @tubescreamer yo dude, when i start looping it eventually fades out. i just bought it a week ago. am i missing something?

  • i see you have the dd-7 too,

would you say the dl-4 or the dd-7 is more bang for your buck in a delay/looper pedal?

  • @JakeBeatdown that's a DD-5, it doesn't have a looper. but the DL4 is my favorite looper-combined-with-delay pedal.

  • what size pedal train board was the dl4 on?

  • is there something like an undo function with the looper?

  • Haha All I use is my deville overdrive, tube screamer giga delay and boss tuner and ernie B volume pedal. And I'm set with PERFECT tone. Looks like you need a little more pedals. lol

  • Useful video.

    thank you very much!

i was quite frustrated with this thing.

  • so the first switch is ONLY for recording??? or it can also b used as a programmable preset?

  • definitely gonna give this technique a whirl...very cool man...

  • How do u get the swells in time with a silent loop?

  • @raybaboon there is no "time" when doing it like this.

  • Pretty cool. Thanks for the tip.

  • Do you have any other pedals on while you're doing this?

It doesn't look like you have the knobs set up to make the DL4

be the one that is self osculating

  • @modestminstrel yes, the dl4 is only being used for looping.

  • I have one of these and when I hit the far left and start recording what I want to loop it starts playing it back too soon. Ahh!! It's so annoying. Do you know if this is a setting I have???

  • @jGracePro are you trying to record for more than 14 seconds?

  • can you use delay WITH the looper on the dl4?

  • @SmallFish616 yes

  • Thanks for your little but great tips!

  • nice toe

  • Are you using the DL-4's delay while looping as well? If it's possible to use the delay while looping or after looping something can you tell me how? haha or do I need a separate delay pedal for that?

  • @thedonace213 it lets you use a delay while looping, but i wasn't in this video.

  • @tubescreamer man, thanks a lot! can you show how to use DL-4's delay while loopinh as well? Thanks!

  • hey man one question, im between buying the dl4 and the eventide timefactor, i see you have both which one you recommend me more? and why?

    thanks!

  • never thought of that lol

  • Doesn't end exactly where it's supposed to start again, which helps keep time in a live setting.

  • Really the only problem I see with this is if you are using a non-ambient loop or if you are recording multiple parts over a loop it won't start at the beginning if you want to bring that loop back later in the song. Also, if you are playing with a drummer, if the loop starts at the beginning of a measure, you can quickly stop the loop and start it when the part repeats if your drummer falls out of sync with the loop or use the play once feature to restart it at the correct time if the loop do

  • hi what type/brand of cable do you use to connect your pedals, i started using some and i found that it took away frm the quality of my clean tone, alot.

  • awesome videos man, keep it up!!

    quick question:

    DL4 or Boomerang III

  • that really clever ,i love your tone :) what are some more ambient sound bands ? cuz im always trying find music like Misery Signals - Worlds and Dreams

  • @tubescreamer could you use the effects of the DL4 while looping?

and would the loops be stackable like on the RC-20?

  • Totally off-topic, and I'm sure you've gotten this before, but how long have you been on YouTube that you were able to get "tubescreamer" as your use name?? :D

And yes, great pad feel and loop technique here:) Hopefully I'll have the money to get a DL4 to try it out in the near future:S

  • @yobhsiFehT apparently I signed up October 3rd, 2005.

  • @tubescreamer

    Nice; that explains it:)

  • so i cant do a chord progression? if i wanna rec with it eh?

  • YES!!! Thank you!!! I've wanted to use the loop function of my dl4 but got soo tired of the pops and breaks and everything.

  • wow - great tip. I never thought of that. I'm glad I saw this video - it will change how I use my looper.

  • Literally just got a DL-4 today, and searched on YouTube in case of any nice toys. Thanks a lot for this video, it's a rare example of a good advice vid on a pedal.

I was getting the hang of trying to do it properly but it was tough to get my loops perfect, yet this will do the job, such a simple yet brilliant idea. Thanks again man.

  • that is beautifull!!

  • Isn't the loop only 14 seconds?

  • how practical is this method for live use?

  • @TacooGrill it is do-able live, i have done it before.

  • @TacooGrill I saw the band Minus the Bear do it last Wednesday :D It sounded awesome.

  • I just bought the Pedaltarain Pro.....do I really need to take the rubber off of the back of the pedals before applying the velcro?

  • @deepblue1963 the velcro stays attached better if you do.

  • @deepblue1963 I think one time I put some hard-core velcro on one of my pedals and then after so long i went to take the pedal off...the velccro was so hard i had to rip it off and the bottom rubber piece went with it....but...if thats the case id just leave it on there untill you accidentally rip it off doing sometihng like what i did haha....cause why rip it off ahead of time?

  • why do you have the boss delay if you have the dl4?

  • @miguelpessanha91

i think he uses the dl4 for looping.

and the dd5 as a different effect.

also he has a carbon copy on his board too.

multiple delay pedals = more options.

  • @miguelpessanha91 as @thricex05 said, it's just to have more options, as well as the ability to stack delays.

  • a-ma-zing!

  • Good tip man thanks!

  • @schecterman09 no problem man, glad it helped!

  • Are you just using the guitar vol to fade in?

  • @FunknGrvn yes.

  • Any mods on that DL4???

  • @cosmogang nope!

  • This is a good tutorial video, and many thanks...I had never thought of doing this..going to experiment a little now on the dl4 with this idea. Just wish the autovolume setting could be looped..Are you using vol pedal for the swells when youre looping like this or is there another effect that 'autoswells' for you, somewhere inline ?

    Cheers.

  • @ianmcgeachy in this vid i'm using the volume knob on my guitar, only because my volume pedal is really squeaky right now. i would rather do it w/ the knob or volume pedal, because i have more control than from an autoswell effect.

  • yea its the same thing for the Hardwire DL8 i got

  • How do you get those swells, are you using the guitar volume knob or a effect? The DL4 also have a auto swell mode. Thanks!

  • Cool video! I want you to get a boomerang, just for listening pleasure lolz.

  • Thanks for the demo it was very helpful. I just love them guitar swells. Very ambient and drone like. And you do them so well.

  • Sweet video,

thoughts on the DD-20 versus the DL4?

  • @xsp18x never played the dd-20, but i love the DL4.

  • very useful tip, thanks dude

  • It's actually pretty straight forward. ;) I often always do it like this.

Oh, by the way! I'm getting in the TimeLine today or tomorrow so I'll do a demo it! I know you've been interested in it! (I'm having a HUGE setup change again, by the way - really downsizing)

Have you checked out the Strymon Blue Sky Reverb, by the way? :)

  • @DemoColorScheme yeah man, that would be awesome! i just wish the damage control stuff wasn't so big and weird looking though... :) and yeah i've seen some good stuff about the Strymon reverb pedal and it looks awesome... are you gonna be picking it up? or have you already?

  • @tubescreamer

Not yet, no. But when it hits Europe, I'll be all over it!

  • @DemoColorScheme I can't wait to see your new setup. I took a 40 day break from Youtube and I feel refreshed. Can't wait to see what you do with the TL!!!!!!!

  • @cosmogang

Me too, bud! Getting some new gear, selling a lot! Getting a new amp, and I'm also getting in the Nova Drive! Analog MIDI controllable drive FTW!

  • @DemoColorScheme what amp are you getting?

  • @tubescreamer

Something completely different, mainly oriented for the other band I'm in: a Bugera 6262. It does have a nice clean channel (+ serial FX loop!) with a bright switch (huge plus for me!) - so I'm sure I can use it just like I used the Koch for cleans.

  • Wow man! This is the answer i've been looking for! Thanks for sharing this and all you do!

  • @erosar10 no problem! thank you for watching!

  • love the video, thanks a lot

One question, what are you using (as effects of course) at the moment you are playing?

  • Really enjoying your stuff. Keep it up man!

  • That was an amazing idea!

  • your videos are always the best.

  • @RadiatorBoy agreed, thanks for making them

  • Wow, great video.

    That's really clever.

  • @arpraron thanks!

  • brilliant! thanks for the tip, this will help tons.

  • @turnstylepoet good! glad it helped :)
