Only the six books written by Frank Herbert is canon. Do not read the McDune novels.

I have to say I have never read the books and only came across this because I'm a fan of James McAvoy but I really enjoyed this movie and would like very much to read the books. Can anyone tell me the names?

Sure the First book is just called DUNE, then you have Dune Messiah and Children of Dune (both books were adapted into the Children of Dune Miniseries) Then you have the culmination of Leto's story in God Emperor of Dune. After that he doesn't crop up again until the finale books of Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune. They're all really good books and well worth a read (even the finale books written by the authors son are a damn good read.)

if you are interested in Dune you can read first the 6 books written by Franck Herbert ( Dune, Dune Mesiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune) Onli after you can continue wits somme of his son's creations ( House Atreides, House Harkonen, House Corrino, Sandworms of Dune, Batlle of Corrino, The Butlerian Jihad, etc) In the end there is The Dune Brundurs wriiten by Patrick Herbert (no, he is not a Herbet familly member....he is romanian). Enjoy!

I was taken aback when I saw the cover of "Sandworms of Dune" but I have to admit. It is not so far-fetched for a Tleilaxu to manipulate the worm's genetics so that it could survive in the water. It is the perfect irony because in their sandplankton form, they seal water away from the surface of the planet and are repelled by water in their adult form. For all you Dune purists out there let me reassure you that if you haven't read those other books, you're not really missing anything.
