Thanks! Michael, appreciate to let us enjoy the old Hong Kong again, I am a HongKong people and I was born in Hong Kong, I never see these kind of film even recorded by the elder HK peoples.
I do not remember I went to Botanical Garden when I lived in Hong Kong. I remember the music played by the military band. Where is that Botanical Garden? Is it still in Hong Kong now??
A collection of my photo's of Hong Kong Kong in the fifties will be shown from 17th March 2010 in the Tao Evolution Gallery, 13 Circular Pathway, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong.
Originally there was no music with the film, which was sold in silent copies to the public, amongst others by Asian Photo Supply. At that time a LP was released with Coronation music and I found that great too and used it to show my copy of the film. I have wondered whether there are any other 16mm copies around!
Undoubtedly. I saw Helen Traubel, Isaac Stern and others perform early fifties in HK, engaged by Harry Odell. A unique event at the time, but not now I suppose.
Actually, Isaac Stern did come to Hong Kong few times after the 50's. But I can't recall in details cos I seldom go to concert and listen to CDs mainly. Sadly, all these master "elderly" artists have gone now.
The music you chose in your coronation clips is just fantastic, giving a great festive and "Royal" sensation to me.This is one of your clips Ithat loved most.
As a old Hong Kong cop. I join you for the request. Since you knew Col. Maxwell, the C.P. of Hong Kong in 1950s. Do you have the vedio clip in respect of his retirement ceremony parade. Because I was one of the Honor Guards.
Thanks for your interest. So many viewers have expressed their nostalgia to less hectic times. Yet there was a lot of sorrow too which we tend to forget .
Even I wasn't born yet in HK around that time for most of the clips you'd taken, it's so nice to see the old HK. To see the big change and bid difference between the so-called modern HK and the old times, don't know how to describe my feeling though.
WOW! Chinese playing American's patriotic musc in the British Crown Colony. Well the Police now still owns a marching band, but I am definitely sure they won't play "Stars and stripes forever" like this!
You are right, life is an even game. When there is a gain, you always have to pay for it. I wish you well, Michael. Chinese New Year is here again. Do you remember the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in Hong Kong? Look after yourself. Talk to you again later.
Michael, You were so fortunate! Look at you equipment used to produce the clips. These items back then was so expensive. You also had chances to go to so many places. When I am watching your clips, I alway feel pity for the normal people who was in HK then but not with us anymore. Their lives were so contrast to yours.
Indeed I was privileged, but did not see my family in six years. It was for them that I made my movies in the first place. I never saw my father again. He died in Holland after I was one year in HK. Well I'm now repaying my debt by making these clips available.
I do feel you have passion of Hong Kong.
Thank you for your fond memories.

Great documentary. I still remember the cricket club.

My family used to visit the Botanical Gardens at least once a month when I was young. It was during the 1970s when I grew up in HK.

@MichaelRogge do you still live in Hong Kong?
legendarybloodfang 4 months ago
@legendarybloodfang No, I lived there from 1949 - 1950 and returned in 1961 and 1989. The first period were the best years of my life.

Uncle Michael, did you play crciket then?
raymondkkng 2 years ago 2
No, it is not a popular game in Holland, although it is supposed to have originated in the Netherlands.

But I know you should be a soccer fan. Have watched your other 2 clips of soccer. Were you in the football field then?

I have to disappoint you. I'm not a soccer fan, but I love filming friends who indulge in it.

But sure we are both music fans, right?
