Is there really that much improvement over the stock ap1 ?

Depends on the condition of the AP1 lens. There is big difference from one AP1 lens to the other. Some are much clearer, while others are clowdy. But it's not just the clarity but also the shape of the lens i.e. thickness at the center and curvature, that contributes to the increased performance.
