It is not called Battery Park. It is the Battery or White Point Gardens. And I believe you have the accuracy of the start of the Civil War off a bit. Shots were fired at Fort Sumter where Union soilders raised the Union flag on April 12, 1861. Now the 150th anniversary of this war.

@msraptor Actually, the Citadel cadets that fired the first shots of the civil fired them at the Union supply ship the U.S.S. Star of the West as it attempted to resupply Fort Sumter. None of the shots fired hit Fort Sumter or the U.S.S. Star of the West, but were able to force the ship to turn away preventing Fort Sumter from being resupplied.

Actually the Civil War started April 12, 1861 When Confederate forces started bombarding the southern wall of fort Sumpter from Fort Johnson on James Island. The "star of the west" story is the citadel version of history. Most historians do not consider firing at (not hitting) an unarmed supply ship the beginning of the war.

If you are in N. Charleston you are in the ghetto where the crime rate is very high.

S. Charleston is where all the historical buildings are at and the beaches, etc.

I can't believe people on here have so mcuh bad to say about Charleston! Everyone I know who lives here loves it. Crime is not that bad, most people I know who actually live downtown feel safe on the streets, even alone at night. All these comments say its gay and dirty - I mean what does that mean anyway? Plus the girls at the college are some of the most beautiful ever. Plus the beach, great food...paradise!

Chucktown is hot in the summer, but moderate temps., throughout the year. You can never walk down a street without seeing something different and interesting. The history makes Charleston and surrounding areas a never-ending place of interest and exploration!

Downtown Charleston is the only nice area, the rest of it is a shit hole! I hate the people, the weather, bugs, and hicks! I was there for the longest 3 months of my life and left never looking back! so gay that place!!!
