his bass drum is way too small to get any quality in sound, his beater is positioned way too high up on the head of the drum, he did basically the correct heal toe, and he sucks at teaching
@MaggotMuncher96 That's an 18-inch bass drum that jazz drummers use. His beater has to be positioned that high due to the relative sizes of the pedal and the BD. As for the sound, I think it sounds pretty nice for an 18".
This guy has played for 27 years and teaches drums, he's damn skilled and after watching his other video I'm even more sure about it. He doesn't suck at teaching, he probably had to make a short video because that's the set amount of time given to him by the filmmaker.
thank god for this guy he knows what hes talking aboutand all the critics,, hes showing the gist of what hes trying to say not go into the tricks and whatnot
Congratulations most of you. You've managed to band together and troll something that while admittedly it isn't the best instruction out there, it certainly isn't worthy of a lynch mob.
The problem with American drummers these days is they think they know everything, and you can't tell them anything without them acting like they know it all. So, why even bother looking at a video, guys. You obviously are John Bonham reincarnated. More practice!
That last stroke doesn't even do what he says it's supposed to... the beater still stays pushed into the head for too long and he gets the muted sound anyway.
@WhereverYouTakeMe That's because the soundwaves spread out from where you hit the head, bounce against the rim and return. If you hit the bass drum it in the centre, it'll mute the sound, making it sound like some kind of cheap tom, whereas hitting it just under or above the centre will give you the nice, deep boomy sound that a bass drum is supposed to make (although that's not quite the case with this one, I'll admit that).
@XxSharkBatexX are you defending these suckers? or are you one of them? seriously, they suck...no offense dude...if you really want to learn bass drum techniques, id say you watch John Blackwell's DVD... EXPERTVILLAGE?? i think its USELESSVILLAGE
I think there's a time and place for everything. Most teachers probably teach "don't bury the beater," but I've found there are times where that's what you want (don't take my word for it--plenty of pros bury it when they want that sound). As far as the "ringing" that results from not burying the beater, that also has its place, and usually results in getting the full resonance of the drum. Useful in jungle, jazz, and in some studio environments to give the engineer something to work with.
Much bigger and fatter sound. Heel-up or heel-down, you have to let your beater bounce off the head if you want a rounder and fatter sound. Basic stuff!!!
@martinlaporte2 i use heel up and heel down both releasing the beater and burying it, all at different times. it gives more dynamic and choice when you can control it, i think people should be open-minded to all styles and experiment a bit instead of just using 1 exact kick sound for 26 years.
any good drummer could please awser my question which i posted as a video?( about bassdrum and triggers. just go to my profile to view it thanks its really appreciated!
i play heel down the whole time and have ever since ive been playing. I use a pearl eliminator double pedal and can play almost any tempo, and i mean stuff like unearth opeth etc. Its possible to get enough power with the foot down technique to play in live scenarios isnt it?
That third technique - if you actually want any benifit from it you reall have to release the beater quicker than that... He's still burying the beater for a good half a sec or so, therefore still muting the sound. Should be a really instant thing.
It's not hard to keep the beater from going into the head while playing heel up. You don't need to go straight to heel down to get it to resonate. Just need to develop better foot control.
Correct me if I am wrong, but to me it looks like Hipgig by Yamaha. I am not very sure about the exact brand/model, but it is certain, that you can disassemble the bass drum in two pieces. Such idiotic inventions just don't sound well. Furthermore he is playing it from the wrong side (if it is a Hipgig after all). And to make things worse, the pedal is too far away from the head, causing the drummer to put too much effort for these extra centimeters.
I tried recently a pedal BOA, it was sorta of an axis, but less expensive and more balanced!
I possess a twin iron Cobra Power glide, and i find it fantastic.
DW in general have more resistance but this means also it tend to fatigue your feet more, but at the end, i believe that out there, there is always a pedal perfect for anyone of us.
no wonder you don't like the feel of iron cobras or axis. dw 5000s have absolutely no resistance at all, they feel vastly different from the other two brands. i like the iron cobra because they have the right amount of resistance and a solid footboard.
i don't know man, I feel like both of those pedals are way too easy to push down. I feel like DW pedals make me feel like I'm putting in effort when i play.
not to be a youtube critic but i'm pretty sure you can just play heel up without holding the beater on the head like every other generic rock drummer who knows any thing about anything.
@propernutrition Yes that is possible but everyone has their own approach to their foot techniques. You'll find most dual-kick metalcore guys will bury their beaters in, same with most other generic neighbourhood rockstar drummers.
Of the many tutors I studied under so far, none of them buried their beaters in. But none of them play death metal either. And all my death metal friends bury their beaters in...
The toms are resonating ... it's not the bass. BUT; you need to get a different pedal for that kick drum. Your beater is TOO high; you'll go through the head!
wat about jazz drumming? the basic time in jazz has soft quarter notes being played on the bass while the highhat is being placed on the second and fourth notes and keeping a swung eighth note pattern on the ride cymbol.
im guessing you mean it sounds horrible. and yea, it does sound pretty horrible, but considering all of the drums are muted.... i dont think the sound exactly matters in that setup.
You all seemed to be freaked about the size of the kick and the sound. It's a Jazz kit that's why. Before you rip the kit, try playing Jazz on a 22"24"or 26" kick. It will sound horrible and out of place.
actually, thats not really all. If the pedal is hitting the center, it gets rid of ring. if its not at the center, it does add ring. but there is also not enough dampening
