Gorbachev's reforms were fast but he had no idea that it would lead to collapse of USSR, when he noticed his reforms was a bit fast he struggled to save USSR. most of the blame lies on yeltsin. He was the key factor in collapse of the USSR. But we should not forget that some of blame lies in Brezhnev as well. Industrial decline was his fault and if he continued the reforms which took place in Khrushchev era, he could have secured the USSR position in the world.

As for the Cold War, it showed extreme inefficiency of a centrally-planned economy which was the cornerstone of all other Soviet economic and political hardships. The state was pumping enormous amounts of resources into defence industry while cutting corners on pretty much everything else.

Gorbachev's reforms were fast but he had no idea that it would lead to collapse of USSR, when he noticed his reforms was a bit fast he struggled to save USSR. most of the blame lies on yeltsin. He was the key factor in collapse of the USSR. But we should not forget that some of blame lies in Brezhnev as well. Industrial decline was his fault and if he continued the reforms which took place in Khrushchev era, he could have secured the USSR position in the world.
Gorbachev isn't only to blame. :)

As for the Cold War, it showed extreme inefficiency of a centrally-planned economy which was the cornerstone of all other Soviet economic and political hardships. The state was pumping enormous amounts of resources into defence industry while cutting corners on pretty much everything else.
