Once again the gh1 shows what an amazing camera it is. You need to go to the 5d mark 2 to beat it, but i appreciate you dont have one of them. It was a good comparison video as it effectively showed the differences between the cameras you use.
@MrMalthus80 I seriously considered the Canon 7d. Both it and the 5d have a huge sensor that shoots gorgeous video in low light. In the end of the day though, more than the price and excellent video customization features, the feature I loved most about the GH1 was the articulated viewfinder. It seems gimmicky, but it changes the entire experience of using the camera, for video or photography. This year, I'll try do make some more vids showing off what it can do :)
@Hikosaemon And not to forget - The GH1 has the worlds most accurate and inteligent automaitc mode (Ai) and will also autofocus while shooting video. The same unfortunantely cant be said for the 5D MkII. Not to mention that from today, the cost of a GH1 with video lens is now HALF the price of a 5D MkII body alone!
@BigCarKilla Good points. For me the articulated viewfinder on the GH1 is huge as well, it changes the whole user experience. But still, the beautiful full sensor of the 5D always makes it win out for the dead serious camera pros. I'm more than happy with my GH1 though ;)

I like the Panasonic better, But the outside shoots with green I think I like the Canon.
To tell you the truth it's not the camera but the person taking the pictures. That's not to say but any camera. But if I had to pick I go with Panasonic now.
@ngvgnDOTcom The main issue with the GH1 is its poor stabilization. For video it is basically a tripod only camera, although I recently got a solution I will soon try out for that :)
The specialized camcorders are made for handheld shooting, and so that is something to remember. But the Panasonic is just a magic camera. Interchangeable lenses, and photos and camcorder features just open up entire new worlds...
GH1 will always beat any HD camcorder with up to 1/3" single cmos ship, simply because its chip is 12.1 megapixels; specially in low light. It will even beat the TM300, HMC70, HMC40, FX7 in low light situations. But the GH1 has to used with very slow panning and in static scenarios. No fast movements because its autofocus is not that fast and it tends to go out of focus. You also cannot see VU meters, or control audio settings, so by faith you hope that your audio is good.
I still use the HF10 and lately have figured out some good night settings. The key isn't so much making it bright, as getting the noise out and getting clear blacks, which I recently found some good settings for. More recent models address this issue that the HF10 had in its automatic settings. Good point about the sound with the GH1 - I got the external mic but have hardly used it yet.
I'm stuck with what I have. The HF10 is my old camera, and the GH1 is my new camera. I would love to do a review of two equivalent cameras, but I can only work with what I have. HF10 is a good camera, but weak in low light (later models improved this) - I think this vid showed that.
both shots are 1080? cause it seems there is some loss whem you converted HF10 regarding details... if GH1 is 720, sure the conversion step is diferent so with diferent results...
Again, no. I had both cameras set on all auto settings. I also clearly mention in the sidebar that normally you would adjust those settings yourself. It just seemed the best way to do the comparison.
I do however admire your passionate defense of the HF10. I still love the camera and plan to go on using it as it remains better to use than the GH1 under many circumstances. It's just a simple side by side. Nothing to get upset about.
"lens kits", and no, the Canon HF10 will cost you around $750 new now, while the GH1 will cost you at least $1300. Go check ebay, amazon or cnet for a better indication of current world pricing schemes.
And yes, the HF10 is 2 years older. Nice comparison there, NOT.
do both cameras you use take still shots? I saw the shots on facebook that you took at the wedding. They are amazing. I am looking for a new video camera that can also take nice still shots (or vice versa) as my camera was stolen T-T. The GH1 video was always very rich in colors and beautiful! Thanks for the comparison!
The colour on the GH1 is amazing. When the bride and groom are signing the register you switched from the HF10 to the GH1 and all of a sudden it felt like I was really there!
Thanks for including my song in your work... I like how you put it to those chil slides, it's a nice match that makes the song look more classy, haha... ;)
I've been saying I wanted this camera since it came out! I want it more for the video quality than anything else but yes for those of us who are good with vid but not so good with still photos this camera will give you something to do and learn! :-) I need to save up a bit more before I can spend any money on it.
I think you're like me, I wanted it for the video too, but it is a great way for people like us to jump into the scary world of photography as well, knowing we are not losing any of the video we like! The price is still dropping on this, but I think at under a grand US already with the lens kit, it is already a pretty good buy.
^^ Yes I think I will try to find a deal online for this, but I'm also needed a new computer so I may have to wait on this camera! but I hope you post more interesting video with it. I'm so in love with the GH1 lol
Love that traffic pic at 3.27...The GH1 wins in artificial light conditions, but the HF10 has vibrant colour outdoors at 2.42, almost too vibrant, but nicer to look at, even if the GH1 may have a crisper picture. But editing would probably bring up vibrancy & the GH1 would then win again...Nice to see Meiji, again. I was there 15/9/08 for my sis in laws wedding, maybe you were there on the same public holiday this year?
Ha, quite possibly the same holiday there! I've been in Japan nearly 11 years, but this was my first ever Japanese style wedding it it was magic to watch. Cheers mate!
Yeah they're pretty cool...was really interesting when you all march off into the little shrine area, where the budist priest & traditional dancers do their thing for the ceremony. Wish I'd got footage of that, but my father in law told me to leave my camera...cheers : )
SLR... Hands down! Great comparison! I'm thinking about upgrading my camera to a Canon D-SLR that will also shoot HD video. You just convinced me that I should!
I have seen jaw dropping amazing vids shot with Canon DSLRs and really agonized over getting one myself. Without question, they are the best quality you can get in video for under 3 grand. I went with the GH1 mainly for the autofocus, dedicated video functionality, light-weight, lower price, and most of all, the articulated viewfinder that allows you to shoot... yourself. A bit narcissitic I know, but without a film crew, it is a big difference. Go for the Canon though, I want to see!
Hmmm... The Nikon D5000 has an articulated LCD screen... seems like a nice thing to have! I'm fairly partial to Canon though... I'll let you know what I get :)
Looks wonderful man! I am jealous of that 14-140mm lens you have with the GH-1. If I had the money I'd get one for my E-P1 ^^. Btw, who and how did did you make your Hikosaemon intro section for all you videos?
Mate, I might bug you a bit about how you designed your own splash page on your website. The amaaaazing intro was sent to me out of the blue by an old Japanese friend who stumbled across my YT channel and decided to make it for me.
The 14-140mm lens is cool, but I can tell you I have spent nearly all my time playing with the beautiful 20mm F1.7 pancake lens that I got as an extra. It probably shoots a lot like the E-P1, another great little camera!
Very true, the real downsides of the GH1 as a video camera are the slower autofocus, and the shakiness (you really need to fix the camera on a tripod to take good video with it). However, one nice thing is that you can use shallow lenses and manual focus to have better control (when you get used to it, which I have yet to do) and really get some very cool cinemagraphic looks... But the SLR is indeed a whole different class (even if technically, the GH1 is an interchangable lens camera, rather than a pure SLR - something to do with prisms and lenses true SLRs use internally).
Oh i see that I'm not alone, though you're right, the only thing that makes me regret it, is the fact that we can't change the zoom whenever we take a video, at least with the Lumix DMC-FX500.. Well I'm not too disappointed by the quality, you are spot on about that.
It's an amazing difference to me, although for pure shooting of other subjects, I really agonized over going for a Canon 7D. I'm pretty happy with how this turned out though, it's something new to learn!
Hey Jas! Yes indeed, this is indeed the same camera that Chris now uses for StreetEnglishTV. I was first put onto this by Psychomelody many months ago, and I mentioned this camera to him not longafter. Tokyocooney's advice on camera also was that it is all about the lens on the camera, which is why these SLRs work so great. For various reasons, now was just the right time for me to persuade my wife we needed an eigth camera...
Good comparison video Hiko! sound quality seems okay too, does it have an external mic. input ? personally I'm going to wait what the guys from RED (Camera) will have ready for the consumer level :) Until now I'm working with a HG20 by Canon.
It has an external mic (2.5mm) input, and there is a mic accessory that I got, but didn't use on this (I thought the sound was pretty good as is, actually). Overall, I'm still a big fan of the Canons, I think their picture quality is unrivalled (7D and 5D dSLR video is amazing), but the GH1 is such a great package, and the adjustable viewfinder in particular sealed the deal for me.
Hehe, even with all the filtering and conversion, DSLR shot video shines through on YouTube. Glad to hear you like it. It makes me want to find stuff to show it off!
Yep, cameras like the Panasonic GH1 and the Canon 7D/5D basically now offer ordinary people the chance to shoot professional quality video. I luuuuurve this camera ;)
To tell the truth, I think I was playing with the settings a bit as I took the GH1 footage. It's hard not to, but I'll work on getting smart with those settings now.
Until I figure out a good way to set up a dedicated blog, I will post my photos taken with the camera on Facebook, which you can see by just adding my username after typing in the Facebook URL ;)
I like the vibrant colours as well, although of course the colours can be adjusted on either camera in the camera or by post processing. But still, I'm used to seeing the same difference comparing my HF10 to my Xacti for example, but this is another jump. A good camera definitely makes a big difference.
I think they're at their best in different situations, as far as i can see by watching youtube right now. The GH1 seem to bring forth more vibrant colors in the start, yet it seems to have less lively colors when you're filming the people standing on the grass.
However, the zoom on the HF10 seems kinda nice. But i can only tell you the obvious differences via youtube tbh :P
Cheers mate! To tell the truth, I think some of those shots, I may have been fiddling a bit with the GH1 settings (I'm still learning my way around it). The main thing I'm looking forward to is seeing it in HD cinemascope when it is done processing ;)
Great video keep up the good work.

The GH1 looks amazing! Especially the still images. They made me hungry!!! LOL. Can't wait to see you use the GH1 more in your videos. :D

Hehe, it sounds like I'll need to shoot some more vids with it then!
I also liked how the vid came out in the new superwide format YouTube is allowing.

gh1 is the best because its less blured and and the colours are nicer.

I tend to agree, although the focus is not as fast on the GH1, but I like having manual control on that.

You don't use automatic settings if you know your camera!

he explains why he did this in the sidebar, and it makes sense for a comparison video like this one.

To tell the truth, I think I was playing with the settings a bit as I took the GH1 footage. It's hard not to, but I'll work on getting smart with those settings now.
Cheers!

Until I figure out a good way to set up a dedicated blog, I will post my photos taken with the camera on Facebook, which you can see by just adding my username after typing in the Facebook URL ;)

The colours on the GH1 are much better, the orange the girls are wearing outdoors really pops.
Funny thing is, the week after i get back to Japan my friend is getting married and i think i might be videoing it. Hope she has a decent camera haha
Cheers man.

Gratz on the new camera though! :D

Cheers mate! To tell the truth, I think some of those shots, I may have been fiddling a bit with the GH1 settings (I'm still learning my way around it). The main thing I'm looking forward to is seeing it in HD cinemascope when it is done processing ;)
